Re: Week #6 - Games of Interest
The MAC is not taking UMASS back. The MAC has made attempts at adding schools over the years, mainly for football...UMASS, Temple, Central Florida. They had Marshall for all sports a while back. They are not good fits. The MAC will never be a TV league defined by TV markets. UMASS does nothing for the MAC.RhowdyRam02 wrote:Not exactly, their football program was kicked out of the MAC because they wouldn't add all sports to the conference. Something tells me if UMass went back to the MAC and said they'd join in all sports they'd be welcomed back. Conference USA is also a potential spot, with their goal being the AAC.
They've found that adding schools that don't fit the geographic footprint and are a poor match from a philosophical perspective aren't worth adding.
If the MAC were to add a school (or schools), you're looking at Youngstown St., Illinois State, Western or Eastern Kentucky.

Florida Gulf Coast fell to 7-5 on the season as the Eagles were soundly beaten on their home court by Oral Roberts, 83-64. After trading baskets early on, ORU took over and sustained a double digit margin the remainder of game.

Arizona State has one of the best offenses in the country. So far, they’ve scored 6 points, at home, against Vanderbilt in 10 minutes. Basketball is crazy.

0.6 left in a tie game no less. FT's made. PC wins by two.
Walk on Planek's defensive intensity turned it around for Friars as he was brought in and a press put on.

Re: Week #6 - Games of Interest
I thought this was suppose to be the year that pc was going to make a run to the top of the Big East and make some noise in the tournament? Return the entire team expect Holt who was a nice complimentary piece to their team (not the first team AA you'd think he was reading their board) and bring in a nice recruiting class. They've barely escaped Belmont, Brown, Rider and now Stony Brook at home, a team who is heading in the wrong direction and seem to be regressing with each game. The meltdown in progress over there is hilarious, they better get their act in order or they will get absolutely destroyed in conference. As soft as a team I've seen in a while, both mentally and physically. To much talent on that team for them to continue this horrid play, but makes you wonder a little bit about Cooley and his ability to bring pc to the next level.

Re: Week #6 - Games of Interest
I feel like PC's season was hanging by a thread at some point last year and they rallied in conference to go from off the bubble to safely in. I have to admit that not living in RI I don't think much about PC most of the time (except when I see "Providence College" bumper stickers on the highway during my commute in and out of Boston, and then I pass some time maneuvering so I can cut them off - traffic is boring and you have to entertain yourself somehow), so this is all a little fuzzy.
PC is nothing if not enormous pests, so I wouldn't write them off yet is my point.

Yes of course it's a long season we have to see how conference play goes
But if they are squarely on bubble then their OOC will do them no favors

Top 75 is all that matters with the new selection process. Q1 games are home 1-30. Q2 games are home 31-75.Rhody83 wrote:It was a horrible call. Made up.ramfan85 wrote:Gee, a whistle at the buzzer. Who would have ever predicted that?

PC was never going to be a Q1 win for us, they should be squarely a Q2 though. As long as they take care of business in the games they're favored, the Big East RPI should keep them safely in that range - NCAA trip for them or not.
If you say you’re a Rhody fan, I know you are my brother. For you have suffered as I have suffered.

Why wouldn't we want PC to have a great year?
....Every win for them helps our RPI. Ditto for every team we play.
....The A10 games are not going to help us much this year, with only three opponents ranked in the top 100 RPI.

Root for PC all you want, but there is a group of long time URI fans who will never root for PC. There is also a group of long time PC fans who will never root for URI. I can respect both URI and PC fans who will not ever root for the opponent.
Same with Ohio State - Michigan, Texas - Texas A&M, UCLA- USC, Oregon - Oregon State, Georgia - Georgia Tech, Florida - Florida State...... it makes for intense, spirited rivalries. Fans of these schools, for the most part, would never root for the other. Not sure why some want to question why some URI fans would never want to see PC win.
I want PC to lose always, in everything. Glad they dropped what was a successful baseball program years ago, glad they have no football team, glad their basketball attendance is down, just the way it is.
But you are free in my opinion to root for both PC and URI, just don’t expect me to. Bah humbug and Merry Christmas as Ed Cooley would say.

The A-10 went 3-1 in Sunday results as league teams put away opponents they were expected to handle:
Duquesne beat North Carolina A&Tm 74-58, in convincing fashion.
La Salle sped by Mercer, 95-85,
Saint Joseph's beat Maine on a second half blitz, 72-59.
Only George Mason disappointed as they let a low level B10 team, Penn State, trounce them on their home court 72-54.

The results this past Saturday and Sunday put the league above .500 versus D1 OOC opponents. Hopefully this mark can be maintained for the remainder of the year as there are not many more non league games to be played.Obadiah wrote:The A-10 went 3-1 in Sunday results as league teams put away opponents they were expected to handle:
