If we win everyone needs to flood Nick Saban's social media with the news. Then he will know who URI is.

Wake up call....
Look, if Cooley had been less worried about officiating,
he'd have noticed Watson continually beating Berry and
Langevine, down the floor, at will.
Watson has a few bunnies doing that.
Could have been a much different game, if they concentrated
on that.
Maybe our defense disrupted their guards, from looking up the floor?
Could be.
We lost to Virginia because Stan got taken to school by Wilkins.
Put a big who could move on Wilkins and that too would have
been a very different game.
So, let's cut the five guard nonsense, as if we could beat
the big boys doing so.
Berry's contribution was vital to the win.
Also, anyone sleeping in Jarvis Garrett is the Rhody
equivilent of a pink hat.
He can guard any PG, shoots it well, and makes
some great passes.
I am worried about EC coming back and messing up the chemistry.
He's the only guy who needs the ball to function.
Doesn't handle, pass or defend well, and shoots it at 41.9% for his career.
People standing around., while he dribbles and dribbles, could be pretty
disruptive.
Time will tell.

Re: 12/6 | Alabama Crimson Tide | 8:00PM
A lot of truth in this...I was talking to another fan and we both said if we had either Kuran or Hassan this year we would be an Elite Eight caliber squad. Our plethora of very good guards will be able to run all over 90% of the teams we play, which is pretty good in and of itself. With the right matchups we can win a game or 2 in March...but eventually we will run into someone with a legit 4. That is where we will get screwed. That is what UVA had. It wasn't their 7 foot stiff center. There are many less true Centers I am worried about, most of them are space eaters and not legit offensive threats. But there are a good dozen or more teams that have legit Power Forwards that will take Stan or any other guard we put on them to school like the kid on UVA who had his career high against us.rodfromcranston wrote:Wake up call....

Cyril is the only guy we have to fill that gap, but it's a gap for sure. And he has not looked good (prob bc he's not healthy). I had hoped Preston could, but feeling less confident with that for this season.
In terms of Jarvis, as Disano had said, he was falling into the trap of pounding the ball on the floor too much going east-west with no purpose. Against PC he moved with aggression, north-south, with purpose, to score or facilitate for someone else (he had a great penetration and kick to Fatts for a wide open 3). That is the Jarvis we need. I too worry about EC returning, for points i made earlier - how it shakes up roles on offense and takes playing time away from a better defensive player. But he can be a prolific scorer and a major threat for opposing defenses so I trust Dan will find a way to redefine roles when he comes back.

Re: 12/6 | Alabama Crimson Tide | 8:00PM
The question isn’t whether you’d want to play four or five guards at the expense of some hypothetical big man that can shut down opposing teams’ good post players. It’s whether you prefer to accept losing a matchup and minimize the damage or try to change the dynamic of the game by playing it asymmetrically. I think there are good arguments for both approaches, and I’m in favor of using both approaches - like I said before, nobody is advocating for playing 4 or 5 guards for 40 minutes.

My key to this game.....simple as always.....do NOT fall behind big early.....we have a tendency to do that, and on the road against a good team it will be very difficult to overcome.
If Fatts needs to come in earlier because the offense is stagnant...then do so.

Can you stop saying that though...we don't have a tendency to do that.
In an earlier thread I posted how we have played from the lead in 100 of the 120 minutes against our last 3 Big East opponents (creighton, seton hall, pc). We led 75-80% of the game against Oregon. There is no data that backs up the assertion that we fall way behind early in big games. Being down 13-8 or 15-9 at the first TO isn't a thing..its just basketball.

Re: 12/6 | Alabama Crimson Tide | 8:00PM
I don't think we can play Langevine and Berry together. They both can defend centers, but I don't trust either of them defending anyone with any quickness. Heck Rod is right they couldn't even keep up with PC's center running the floor. Besides, Berry is not built to play huge minutes (20 is fine) and Langevine is injured and foul prone. So they can share the 5 position. I think we need to have a larger presence at the 4 and Akele/Preston need to see minutes. SH and PC failed to take advantage of the mismatch, but VA did and others will. We need someone to step up. But they need to see some playing time otherwise they won't be ready. The 4 guard can and will work, but it needs to be just part of the plan, IMO. The 5 guard lineup can only be for very short spurts. I thought Cooley did not adjust well to our small lineups. Others will adjust and attack. Hope I'm wrong.

Re: 12/6 | Alabama Crimson Tide | 8:00PM
I was shocked when PC went small, virtually playing right into our hands. They made little attempt to post up Bullock, who could have had a field day taking uncontested 8 footers. Watson scored easily on us but only got 3 shots and 19 minutes. Not a good game for big Ed.
The flip side of that is that our guards cause a lot of havoc, PC got shook. There was a series of 8-10 possessions in the first half when they had flat out trouble running offense. We were pushing them 30 feet from the hoop and getting our hands on all kinds of balls. Travels, steals, rushed passes. They could not handle it. That is clearly the key to our success with our deficiencies in front court. Points off turnovers will be a key stat for us all season long.

We do have a tendency to let teams hang around though.
Theres one area where I hope EC can provide that extra offensive boost so that we can put some teams to bed earlier.

Rhody needs to match up with the other team. You can’t win too many games when the other team shoots above 50% FG. If they get a lot of shots inside 4 feet that is a recipe for trouble. I think DH will play the forwards more against Alabama because of their size. If teams go small obviously Rhody will play a small line up. The first time Rhody went 5G was because PC went small first with Bullock as their biggest player. DH did concede in postgame that they are going to need to create a lot of turnovers because teams are going to shoot a high FG% against them. It concens me that Cyril looked out of it vs PC and played only 8 minutes when DH tageted him for 15-20. It seems obvious that Preston isn’t going to get much time. He only got 3 minutes vs PC on a night when Cyril played 8 and Akele was out.

Channel 611 is showing Florida Gators v Loyola
Below that is 611-1 days To be determined but I Woukd guess that is SEC plus

Re: 12/6 | Alabama Crimson Tide | 8:00PM
So many players get knocked down on this board. Limiting their potential daily. Then they go out and out perform the limits set by joe-schmoe and people here act like it is an aberration. I personally think our back court is great and our front court is good.
I don't think the two losses are on the team's collective talent or any individual's lack of something. Nevada outcoached and outplayed us. I think they were just ready to compete earlier in the season than we were. Throw in the home game for them and that's it. The UVA game we missed easy stuff and were outcoached. Bennet outcoaches most.
The guard heavy lineup is a double edged sword that cuts both ways. The rebound against Oregon killed us. Rebounding and inside play has killed us this year in the two losses.
I do think URI has more potential in this season to be riding much higher come March by playing the style that they are playing and have been trying to play. It is absolutely lethal. The more the guards are active rebounding/defending/taking care of the ball, the higher the ceiling.
But I also like what I have seen from Berry, Langevine, Preston, Laysard. Just because a guy scored on them here or there. Just because they missed an opportunity. They don't get a fair shake in the least. Those guys are treated like pinch hitters and just thrown out there for moments at a time. The fact that they show anything good is a testament to themselves.

I posted this a month or so ago on our schedule discussion. SEC + is on WatchESPN only.
Ramtastico » 1 month ago
Not sure anyone noticed, but the Alabama game is listed as 8:00 EST(7 CT) and is on SECNetwork +(Plus). This is from the Tide website.
"Plus +" is on Watch ESPN and Apple TV, among others. It is not channels 611 or 611-1 on Directv. The plus network is only on the internet.
That game is the last listed on our schedule with a "TBD" time.
I may be making the trip there, like I did at Auburn for Danny's first Rhody win!

From Dan: On Alabama's 3-on-5 situation against Minnesota: “I haven’t gotten to that part of the film yet. I’m about three games in on those guys, kind of saving that for later on today when I’m a little bit tired of watching these guys on film. I’ve heard a lot about it and I can’t wait to see the look on Richard [Pitino’s] face.”
This would be the game where Alabama’s 3 players outscored Minnesota’s 5.

Further to the above comment, wouldn't expect a very hostile environment at Bama. From the SEC games I have seen on TV they don't draw well at all for OOC games...can't imagine URI, without a number next to us, will be a big draw. Better for us.

While I do agree, they did get pretty loud in that UCF game and had a pretty good draw from the looks of it on TV.

On the whole getting back on defense thing.
This has been a problem for years and one of the first things i really watched out for this year was if the team seemed to have fixed this. It's been a problem with virtually every Hurley team that i can recall in the sense that it often seemed that any team that is smart enough to try to test us here is almost guaranteed to get a few easy buckets.
In fairness It seemed like the team made some improvements here and although teams were not really looking for it the team did seem to be improving before regressing in this area vs PC. Hopefully the last game was a wakeup call.
I think we should win since i honestly don't think BAMA is that good. But Rod is also 100% right that Berry needs to concentrate better. He has been liable to lose his man at times or screw up on switches. The problem is he seems incapable of moving at more then a light jog i call "Dre speed". I think We've been lucky so far teams have really not exploited this much, likely because they had so little scouting or film on him before the year. He needs to really step it up or teams will start going after him mercilessly.

After Bama, there aren't many teams on our schedule who can go after him mercilessly.

In that sense it was a blessing in disguise we play all the really Athletically gifted teams early.. Cause Andre could really go to work vs the conference this year i feel.
