KenPom is not buying URI this year. They have us ranked 62nd in the country, going 19-9, 13-5 in conference, just edging out St. Joe’s for the conference title. They list us as 1 point underdogs against Providence with a 45% chance of winning.

Not surprising given the defensive weight lost from Hassan leaving and the rebounding from Kuran leaving. The model doesn't know what to do with unknowns.RhowdyRam02 wrote:KenPom is not buying URI this year. PC comes in at 25 (!)
LOL at the projected winner of the A10 not getting to 20 wins. It wont happen. Also, KenPom is really down across the board for the A10 whihc makes sense with all the changes and uncertainty.

I’ve never liked kenpom. I know many here like it and will point to its inaccuracies in the beginning of the season.
It doesn’t account for the unknown and the unknown is why I watch sports.

Re: The 2017-2018 Season
I just went through the schedule game by game for the first time, in terms of looking at an overall/conf record, and I'm actually not sure I disagree a whole lot with this prediction. It remains to be seen how the rest of the A-10 shapes up this year, but I think a 19-9 (13-5) or a 20-8 (14-4) is probably going to end up being pretty close to reality.RhowdyRam02 wrote:KenPom is not buying URI this year. It’s just placeholder data run through his algorithm. Don’t read much into October KenPom listings.

All going to depend on how much we get from the frontcourt.
Imo Berry and Preston are the keys. We pretty much know about Cyril and Akele. Both of them should be better though.
Layssard hopefully will contribute...not sure about Tertsea.

Our out of conference schedule is very tough. I can see us not having a great OOC record and then racing through the A10 like Taco Bell through your digestive track after a night of drinking.Seawrightspostgame wrote:I feel like this take is in conflict with your signatureadam914 wrote:I just went through the schedule game by game for the first time, in terms of looking at an overall/conf record, and I'm actually not sure I disagree a whole lot with this prediction. Re: The 2017-2018 Season
I agree with the above, Preston and Berry are the most important keys if we are to go above the Kenpom predictions. If Preston can stay outta fould trouble (same goes for Cyril), and Preston can get 6-7 boards/game while playing good defense i think we should end the year at 21-8 or 22-7 (wishful thinking) before the A10 tourney begins.
Berry really can provide a spark too off the bench withi his offense, but if he can provide mins with ok/decent defense that will really help for Preston and Cyril
I know Akele is there as well, but he really doesnt have the strength as a traditional big

Re: The 2017-2018 Season
Interesting, I dont see that. I think 14-4 would still be a pretty good season. I dont think the A-10 is going to end up being a league where someone goes 16-2 or 15-3 this year. I could see us getting stronger as the year goes on and maybe I'm wrong and we do put together a 2 or 3 loss conf record, but I think the out of conference schedule is tougher than some are realizing.Seawrightspostgame wrote:I feel like this take is in conflict with your signatureadam914 wrote:I just went through the schedule game by game for the first time, in terms of looking at an overall/conf record, and I'm actually not sure I disagree a whole lot with this prediction. Not so sure about Berry...main reason he'll probably play more than last year is because it would be hard to play less.wpbrown8267 wrote:I agree with the above, Preston and Berry are the most important keys if we are to go above the Kenpom predictions. Familiar refrain about losing weight and being in better shape, etc...but, the next time he plays 3 straight minutes without getting totally scorched on D....will probably be the 1st time?

Re: The 2017-2018 Season
I just figured if you think guys will step up, which is common in college because players do leave every year, then you would forecast a more successful year.adam914 wrote:Interesting, I dont see that. I too think guys will step up and replace what was lost. Not minimizing what was lost but fan bases every year learn that losing players is part of the game and sometimes or often they get replaced with people more productive.
I personally think we are going to have a banner year better than anything in a very very long time. MY thing is I don't lose interest when my initial expectation isn't met. Oh well, Go Rhody! Beat Buffalo!

It'll be interesting to see how much momentum we carry over from last year. We are going to be tested right away with Nevada and then we turn right around and play in the tip off tournament.
Will that toughness and confidence that we finally established at the end of last year carry over into November?

ESPN Article: Atlantic 10 Preview. Love seeing when URI pops up on the ESPN NCAAB newsfeed
http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basket ... re-bonnies
The league title will come down to: Rhode Island vs. expectations.
Dan Hurley's team came within one possession of upsetting Oregon and reaching the Sweet 16 last March. The Rams return E.C. Matthews, Jared Terrell, Jeff Dowtin, Stanford Robinson and Jarvis Garrett. Keep in mind that, even coming off an NCAA tournament run, there's still room for improvement with an offense that connected on less than 33 percent of its 3s in A-10 play last season. The Rams can capture their first regular-season conference title since URI shared the 1980-81 Eastern Athletic Association crown with Duquesne. It's been a while.

Who is this new ESPN "insider" guy? Bring back Eamonn Brennan!!! Pretty sure other teams made the tournament last year from the A10. I think he was trying to say that URI is the only one of the teams he's mentioned that made it to the Dance, but that's what you get when you fire almost all your college basketball writing talent, ESPN. dopes!
ESPN's John Gasaway wrote:That being said, Rhode Island's the only team in the A-10 that made the NCAA tournament last season and is bringing back the bulk of its rotation. The Rams are going to be tough to beat.

I think he means that Rhode Island is the only team in the A-10 that made the NCAA Tournament last season AND is bringing back the bulk of it's rotation. In other words, the other 2 are not bringing back the bulk of their rotation.ATPTourFan wrote:Who is this new ESPN "insider" guy? Bring back Eamonn Brennan!!! Whatever he meant to say is not very clear.
Plus I would not say that URI is bringing back the bulk of their rotation when their two starting Senior big men Hassan Martin and Kuran Iverson are not returning - very big shoes to fill.
