Great start to a very important recruiting year. Hopefully the coaches can build off this and get another solid nucleus of great players and young men like Dana Tate.

Loved the part of the story where he said he was going to help recruiting...and that he wanted to keep building on the success.

I've only seen Dana Tate on the videos posted here. It looks like he has a similar skill set to former URI standout Will Daniels.

I've never seen him play, but the person who told me he was going to URI is high in him. He said his ranking would be higher, but his team is not very good. His belief is that it may take him a while to adjust to the upgrade in level of competition, but that he will be a good four year player at Rhode Island.

Maybe it's the logo associated with your account, but this sounds like a back handed complement... he plays for a great EYBL program and MacDuffie is always competitive in the best HS league this country has, the NEPSAC!Bigsnoop wrote:I've never seen him play, but the person who told me he was going to URI is high in him. Nice job Dan and staff. Took a big step toward a very good recruiting class......like I've said, I needed to see results before being convinced.
This is a great start toward that.

Re: '18 CA SF Dana Tate (URI Commit)
fwiw i do remember some other posters mentioning Expressions roster has been considered a bit down on talent the past year or two.
Anyways, he still plays on one of the better AAU teams in the North East and i guess he is in a good HS league also. Although i admittedly know almost nothing about HS basketball outside RI. SO his level of competition is going to be high regardless. Seems like it's comparable to Terrels and he someone who caught on quickly.

I don't think Expressions is down. They finished 11-5 in Nike EYBL, easily the premier AAU Organization. They also had a huge victory late in the season against BABC.

Re: '18 CA SF Dana Tate (URI Commit)
I was told that the staff had Tate ranked as a top 100 recruit. This is very similar to Dowtin last year. The staff had Dowtin as a top 100, even though nobody else did.

Good to know. Staff certainly called it right with Dowtin.Billyboy78 wrote:I was told that the staff had Tate ranked as a top 100 recruit. This is very similar to Dowtin last year. The staff had Dowtin as a top 100, even though nobody else did.

If Tate turns out as good as Dowtin, we are going to be fine. Looks like a great replacement for Iverson.

You have to work hard to find an insult there! If you followed NEPSAC, you would know that Macduffie wasn't very good last year. Because of that, Tate was double teamed a lot, and forced to do too much. I was told his talent is better than his ranking of around 200. I swear, this is a good thing and take it as a compliment.

Re: '18 CA SF Dana Tate (URI Commit)
Tate is a borderline 4 star........if the staff thinks he's a top 100 recruit, I tend to believe that.
Let's put it this way: He's an upgrade over what we have now at his position. Or he will be soon, at least. [Not taking anything away from Preston, who looks like a steal.]

Tate was top 82 in the class of 19', I think that's about right and not a stretch to say top 100 in class of 18'.

Verbal Commits has him at 2*. Scout and Rivals has him at 3*. ESPN doesn't have him in their database.

ESPN might be the laziest rankings out of all of them... literally will bump a kid if they commit to DUKE, UNC, UK or Kansas... ESPN IS THE WORST!!!theblueram wrote:Verbal Commits has him at 2*. Scout and Rivals has him at 3*. ESPN doesn't have him in their database.

Not gonna work for me, he's right handed! Joking... actually he finishes around the hoop well with either hand. Great way to get the ball rolling for the class of 18! Another recruiting win in my book.
Go Rhody!!!

Re: '18 CA SF Dana Tate (URI Commit)
I love everything Tate has to say.
Hurley is an educator, not just a coach. These kids get a lot more than just basketball knowledge from him and Tate looks like yet another respectful kid that will represent our program extremely well.
It's a great time to be a Rhody fan.

Agree 100% with last 2 comments. Great pick up And maybe he can also provide and additional skill, helping to get some other recruits. I believe he commented on talking to and trying to recruit Jeenathan WIlliams. If he can convince him it would be another feather in his cap and the Rams certainly would be further on their way to their greatest recruiting class ever!

The high school he attends (the MacDuffie School) is actually in Granby, MA which is just south of Amherst (where UMass is located).

Is it normal for someone to do an official after they have already verballed? I was hoping Dana would be here next week when Jermaine Harris visits.

My guess is Tate will be on site when Jermaine conducts his official visit too. Tate made numerous unofficial visits to URI.

I love this kid already. Love that he wants to be here and he's not even here yet. Hurley grabbed a future leader on this team for sure.

This kid is going to have a cult like fan favorite following purely because he's been recruiting as hard as the staff. Love that Dana loves being a Ram!
