One of our all time greats still gets headlines in Italy, decades after his playing days ended.

I did something sort of similar. I worked that job in 2004 and sat at the scorers table for the games and I handed out stats to announcers on breaks. I was working during the St. Joseph's game that ESPN had and I tapped Dick Vitale on the shoulder during the game with the scoresheet. Needless to say I got spoken to and it didn't happen again. I am also pretty sure that had they won that game I'd have been with everyone else rushing the court.adam914 wrote:His shot to beat Seton Hall in the NIT was one of my favorite memories as a student. I think I've told this story before, but I was working as a student in the athletics media relations office so I was at the scorers table for the game helping with stats and totally got in trouble for leaping the scorers table and rushing the court after he hit the shot. Forgot for a minute that I was working and shouldn't be doing stuff like that!

Awesome, I definitely did the sheet pass out at times to. That was always the best job, very easy. I wonder if we crossed paths a few times.scine20 wrote:I did something sort of similar. Not sure as I was only there in the winter/spring of 2004 (second semester). But I assume we worked for the same people.adam914 wrote:Awesome, I definitely did the sheet pass out at times to. The job was cool though. We had access to pretty much anywhere in the Ryan Center before, during and after games. I can remember hearing Jim Baron scream at the players after they lost at home to Duquesne and I've never heard someone yell like that in my life.

I hope Gil is looking around as he travels in Europe for a player that could help us. I was watching the South Carolina game the other day and was astounded to hear that their 6'10" starting center is from Estonia. Estonia--that small country that used to be part of Russia.
We do have a few ex-players in and around Europe that should be acting as scouts for our staff and for our new recruiting coordinator if we are able to hire you know who.

Really wanted to post this in one of the other Hassan threads, but I guess it technically belongs here.
Also, per Hass's Instagram story, it looks like he also worked out for the Celtics last weekend.

I would love to see Hass make the NBA. First and most importantly because I love the kid and want to see him do well. It also would help in the future recruiting of forwards to show that Hass was recruited, signed and developed at URI and made it to The League.

Re: Where Are They Now? Former Player Results and News
From a high level in following the NBA somewhat: I think Hassan's path to sustained success at the next level is as a "small ball" 4. The best path for long-term security would be to get selected in the draft but have the club send him to the D League with instructions to take 500 perimeter jumpers per day in practice and games. Once he can get to 70-80% with 18 footers in an empty gym, then he can be looked at for a bench/rotation spot with the big club.
That said, many players would rather not get drafted at all because the team holds your rights for less time so if you catch on and have a solid rookie season with an NBA club you can make more money sooner.
Based on Hassan's shooting stroke I think he can get to a decent percentage on mid-range and perimeter 2-point shots, once he is able to focus on this and is not forced to play down low. He also showed brief flashes of a drive in game when receiving the ball outside, which can be developed. Playing in a little more space (the current NBA style of play along with longer 3-point arc) should also benefit his health. I think based on the intangibles we can agree Hass was our "mini-Draymond Green". He just needs that additional marketable skill to demonstrate to the League either pre-draft or in the following year or two in the D League/overseas, since his standout college attribute of shot blocking will be marginalized a bit at the next level.
Hass isn't even on a top 100 draft list I looked at, but it only takes one team to fall in love with a guy. We shall see...

I wish this was true. Green was more like a point guard(forward) for MSU. Green was more akin to a gritty Lamar Odom.
Martin IMHO is more of a poor man's Paul Milsap.
Hope he sticks.

Re: Where Are They Now? Former Player Results and News
I think it's safe to say both will play in the summer league, it'll be good to watch them play with other high level players. I don't see one of them getting drafted though.
I expect one or both will play in the D-League first, but ultimately end up being very good European players.

Best of luck to both of them, I really hope they don't have to play in Europe. Jimmy Baron was the best shooter I ever saw in college and if it wasn't for youtube, I'd never see him play again.

This is from the Chris DiSano article also posted in the 17-18 season thread:

CD: Perfect segue… what are those graduates, Hassan Martin and Kuran Iverson, up to these days?
DH: Those guys are in the midst of working out for teams right now. Each guy has been brought in by a couple different organizations to work out and have had their pro days. Hassan had his in New York and Kuran is having his in Los Angeles. Kuran is out west training and working out. Both guys had opportunities to go to Portsmouth and weren’t able to do it, whether injury or agent’s decisions… but they’re going to get a great look because of the success they had as individuals and team success."
