Not all offers are created equal and schools that suddenly lose recruits and have to scramble to grab more IE: Dayton and VCU among them often feel they have to fill those schollys with whatever.

Agree with EGram, Dayton hasn't even gotten a visit i believe and they are not in complete rebuild mode but are certainly not a NCAA tourny ready team. They are throwing a lot of scholly's to a bunch of prospects, i wouldn't worry too much about Dayton. I think Mississippi State and Georgia are more competition. Come on DH we need to get this kid!

I'm skeptical of players who blow up this late, not based on performance. This is one of the reasons 700 transfer every year.

I dislike this point in the cycle,
when everyone is like a guy in a bar at closing time
who's had a few.
Whatever women are left, begin to look good to him,
so he picks one up, and is mortified the following day,
when he sobers up.
Desperation sometimes leads to foolish decisions.

If we can't sign someone who is ready to step in and play from day one then we should hang on to the scholarship.

Re: '17 NY PF - Obadiah Toppin (Offer)
Rod,
That is an excellent analogy.
For many of the guys available now, there is a reason they are still available.
There might be some good name teams around like Illinois, Wake Forest, Dayton, VCU, etc but they are also teams who may have had players opt for the NBA Draft, transfer unexpectedly, transfer expectedly, incoming freshmen who changed their mind, etc. My guess is that a relatively high percentage of these late signees end up transferring out after a year or two, especially if they opt for a school that is really above their ability level and they are unable to get much playing time.
The really recruiting is going on right now in Hampton Virginia this weekend with the first Nike EYBL and other AAU Tournaments, Recruiting for 2018 and 2019. 2017 is in the cycle like you say

We had two 3* forwards ride pine all last year. When I search ESPN for Toppin I get nothing. Not saying that means anything, but it might mean something.

Re: '17 NY PF - Obadiah Toppin (Offer)
Any news on Toppin? I know he had a visit w/Dayton a few weeks ago. Are we leaving a scholrship open and closing the books on the 2017-18 recruiting class. Just seeing if anyone had an update on this or the Jalen Poyser front.
Was hoping to get another big for this upcoming year, but if DH didn't see anyone that could contribute right away then I understand not signing someone that could take a scholarship for the 18' class.

I think we're still in on him. I know twitter follows don't mean everything, but Toppin and Eric Younkofski just followed each other today. Unless they're just good buddies, I assume it means something.

There's not a lot of chatter about him on Dayton's. One guy assumes he's coming here, but I don't know how credibe he is.

Sounds like he wants to come here.....but can he now?
I still think IF the staff wants him and thinks he'll be very good here in time.....that something might happen to open up a spot.....

Re: '17 NY PF - Obadiah Toppin (Offer)
Are scholarships offered for a one year period, then renewed?
If so, what is the recommitment date by the school?
Berry might be a D2 player?
Tertsea would be eligible to play immediately, if he transferred.

Scholarships are 1 year at a time, but schools can offer multi-year scholarships. According to the link, schools must notify the player in writing by July 1 if they are not going to renew the scholarship.
In the event that Andre Berry did decide to transfer, he could very well still play at the Division 1 level. There are a lot of levels between the A10 and Division 2, especially for someone who has Andre's talent level. Just because a player isn't a perfect fit for the style that we play doesn't mean that they can't contribute in a different system.
If Tertsea were to transfer now, he would still have to sit out a year. The redshirt does not count towards sitting out due to transfer. The only way that he can transfer without sitting is if/when he graduates.

Re: '17 NY PF - Obadiah Toppin (Offer)
There is an actual answer to your question, but it does not matter because Dan Hurley will never, ever pull a kid's scholarship for basketball reasons. It isn't worth talking about. And frankly, as an alum of the school, I'm embarrassed it was brought up.CTRamfan wrote:Are scholarships offered for a one year period, then renewed?

I would be sad to see Berry leave. I've seen so many players in college basketball come in overweight and never lose it. Andre Berry worked his ass off to get to where he is today. He deserves to be a Rhody Ram.

TRUE POINT..........thanks for the info.
I was talking more in generalities, and using the named players as an example.........The question was previously asked as to how another scholarship player could be brought in.

Re: '17 NY PF - Obadiah Toppin (Offer)
As I stated long ago....a couple of players were approached about their prospects of playing time here in the near future.....they were not being forced out....but given a realistic assessment....they would have been assisted in finding appropriate landing spots...they were told the decision was entirely theirs....they chose to stay.....I don't think their minds have changed...and I don't believe the coaching staff would force them out....

Re: '17 NY PF - Obadiah Toppin (Offer)
I don't have any inside info here, but I don't think it's hard to imagine which ones - look at the end of the bench. I also think it's safe to assume that the staff provides realistic assessments to all of the players on the team. Meaning, they were probably told, "Hey, you're welcome to stay and we think you're a valuable practice contributor, but you might only get 10 minutes or less per game next year."CT Rhody wrote:Can you enlighten us which players these were that the coaching staff discussed this with?

Re: '17 NY PF - Obadiah Toppin (Offer)
Agree, these conversations are between coach and player. Some of the players may work very hard in the off season and come back and fight for more playing time. Hurley would speak to all the players one on one as he always does at the end of every season.

That's good that DH is upfront like that with the players. If these guys want more playing time then they can transfer out, if they are content with just being a reserve and improving and waiting it out maybe more playing time develops in future years then they stay.

Could turn into a good pickup for Dayton down the road. Very raw but a lot of upside. Good get for Flyers.

Re: '17 NY PF - Obadiah Toppin (Offer)
He's a player that Dayton, being where they are right now, could take a chance on. They have roster room, and their expectations for next season are somewhat tempered, given that it's Dayton, so they don't need immediate contributions. It's still unusual for a prep year player to be that far under the radar and turn into a valuable contributor, especially early on in his college career.

Re: '17 NY PF - Obadiah Toppin (Dayton Commit)
My guess is, if he had come along a year later, we would have taken him.
With 5 openings for 2018, we could take that chance and develop him down the road.
But I'm really hoping we can land a couple of bigs and wings that can help right away......as in 4 star quality.
We have enough projects as of now.

78, I think if we had another opening we would have taken him.
Tells you what the needs are for next season, doesn't it? The staff knows they need immediate help, just hope Preston is good enough to help right away.

Re: '17 NY PF - Obadiah Toppin (Dayton Commit)
The idea of a project is that they don't stay projects forever. By the time an '18 player gets on campus, Layssard will be a Junior and Tertsea a redshirt soph. If neither guy is contributing at that point, you'll likely have problems that an 18 year old isn't going to solve unless he is a 5* one-and-done lottery pick. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that.rambone 78 wrote:My guess is, if he had come along a year later, we would have taken him.

Yeah, that would be my suspicion, as someone who wears free t-shirts his girlfriend got him at work fairs, haha. It seems like he seriously considered us, and there aren't any bad feelings (yet, since he's not at Dayton yet), so why not wear it to play some pick-up?reef wrote:Maybe he got the URI shirt on his visit and he is just wearing it to play pick up ??
