Ec needs to get that 3 point shot going . He has the capability to hit that but he is missing lately
We need the whole team hot from 3 also we have the shooters

Tough to depend on the 3 when playing back to back, and possibly back to back to back. Tired legs = poor 3 pt. %.

I wouldn't change anything. You've won 5 in a row with Jarvis coming off the bench. Jarvis gives you a good spark coming off the bench. Dowtin plays well enough. Don't fix what's not broken.

I wouldn't mind seeing Jarvis shooting more if he can get open. Now that he's getting back in shape, he's due for a good offensive game. I thought he looked awesome against Davidson.

If Jarvis is almost 50/50 with Dowtin I am fine with whoever starts and simply riding the hot hand that night and/or better matchup

I like Jarvis energy he is playing with and he is making nice passes out there
Next we need that consistent 3 from him

Why are we talking about last year?rodfromcranston wrote:Jarvis Garrett made 52.4% of his 3s in A-10 play last year!
A very respectable 42% for the entire year from 3.
Both numbers, best on the team.
Based on the stats, Garrett was the best on the team.

Re: Who is the starting PG for the A10 tourney?
Because Jarvis was sick for an undetermined part of this
season.
Do you judge a baseball pitcher who needed Tommy John surgery
while he had a sore arm, or what he did before that?
Jarvis proved last year, what he was capable of.
Those stats speak to his shooting ability.
Those weren't five minutes of some random game.
They were from the entire A-10 schedule and the OOC.

He's got a nice looking shot as does Jared EC and Stan , now we need them all hot when teams zone us

Re: Who is the starting PG for the A10 tourney?
I think we should judge him on right now, today. Is he the best 3-point shooter on the team after being sick and missing a lot of games? That's much more relevant than what happened a year ago.rodfromcranston wrote:Because Jarvis was sick for an undetermined part of this

And I sure as heck wouldn't judge a pitcher on what he did before Tommy John surgery.

Funny, most GMs do.
Every GM's quote is,"We want to get him back to where he was
before he needed surgery."
What else would you judge a player who is injured on but
past performance?

Re: Who is the starting PG for the A10 tourney?
I'm judging him on current performance. He's played six games since coming back, double-digit minutes in all of them. He's 3-10 from 3. I don't think based on that you can say he's the team's best 3-point shooter RIGHT NOW. Four guards on the team have better shooting percentages from 3 this season.
I hope he lights it up in the A10s. Yes, he was very good from 3 last year and is capable of doing that.

I just don't see how you can draw meaningful conclusions either way from 10 shots. If he had made 6 or 7 of them would you say he should take all of our shots because he's the best 3 point shooter in the country?

Re: Who is the starting PG for the A10 tourney?
I don't really care who starts, the bigger question is who will get the most minutes. Against Davidson Stan got 26, Dowtin 22, and Garrett 21. I thought that was a decent distribution although I think you could've bumped Dowtin down 4-5 minutes and given them to Garrett. Either way that's the problem with having so many guards at similar overall skill levels, you never know who will have the hot hand and I'm sure it's difficult for Dan to figure out who deserves more minutes game to game.

The other way to look at it is it's a positive because if a player gets hurt or is playing poorly you can plug in another player and keep a consistent level of performance.josephski wrote:I don't really care who starts, the bigger question is who will get the most minutes. Re: Who is the starting PG for the A10 tourney?
Well yea that's important too but most of the time whoever you have finishing the game should be the guy getting more minutes. If Jarvis is the guy who Hurley wants in at the end of the game then it would make sense to give him more overall minutes even if Dowtin starts.Rhode_Island_Red wrote:It's not who starts, it's who finishes the game.

Re: Who is the starting PG for the A10 tourney?
Maybe, but do we know his minutes limit? He may only be able to go 20-25 minutes, and we don't know how he'll respond to back-to-back games or (please, God) three in three days.josephski wrote:Well yea that's important too but most of the time whoever you have finishing the game should be the guy getting more minutes. Re: Who is the starting PG for the A10 tourney?
Points can come from Mathews, Terrell, Iverson and especially from Martin.
Defense has been the driver for URI, especially last 6 weeks so the PG needs to provide that relentless toughness on the ball and off the ball. PG who can get the ball down low to Martin the best has the edge from me.
Defense, passing, leadership - most important qualities with this team right now. Shooting 3's is ok but not a high priority considering the offensive capabilities of the other 5 starters.
That said, we have several guys who can handle PG so go with the guy who is performing the best, if they falter sub fast.

I agree with that notion...feed the beast, Hassan needs as many touches in the paint as possible. No matter who we play he can dominate, we need to feed him continuously and ride on his back as far as we can. Everyone else can fall into place around him.

Re: Who is the starting PG for the A10 tourney?
I'm looking for a huge presence with Jarvis making that extra pass. Hopefully Dowtin can find his shot. We need to play to our strengths which means more lethal EC left hand drives to the basket and less off balance perimeter shooting. Teams will definitely be ready for him this time so we better be prepared to counter-punch and have EC either kick it back out or run plays with more help spreading the defense.
An most important, FEED HASS. Teams just cant stop him right now.
Lets just win it all.

Feed Hassan Martin.
Right now he is the best player in the Atlantic 10 on offense and on defense
Point guards need to play defense and feed Martin - everything else is secondary

I would like to think that 2 fouls doesn't mean an automatic benching at this point.rodfromcranston wrote:Also, pray that Hassan doesn't pick up two quick fouls.
Dan has made some great decisions letting both hass and KI ride out 4 fouls and play smart.
They're seniors in the final weeks, Id hope they can play without fouling.

Re: Who is the starting PG for the A10 tourney?
Don't give him the "Will Daniels" treatment -- Rod mentions it often, but it was infuriating when Baron put him on the bench and let that Creighton NIT game go south because he was saving him from foul trouble in what turned out to be his last game as a Ram.

Re: Who is the starting PG for the A10 tourney?
I think Hass is playing it safe more often on defense lately, staying home rather than going for the blocked shot. He's not doing that all the time, but seems to be picking his spots. Actually, I'm not sure if he's doing it because he doesn't have the lift that he used to (watch some film from 2 years ago) or if he is consciously doing it to stay out of foul trouble. Anyway, I like that approach. As much as I love seeing him block shots, it's more important that he's on the floor for 35 minutes.

Re: Who is the starting PG for the A10 tourney?
Also Billyboy, Hass had his two highest rebounding games of his career with 18 in the all important VCU game then followed up with 17. So maybe your observation that he is going for fewer blocked shots, for whatever the reason, is resulting in his having better rebounding position? And also possibly resulting in fewer fouls allowing him to stay on the floor more minutes. Those are some huge rebounding numbers, especially in such important games against tough opponents.

When was the last time DH played anybody with 2 fouls in the 1h ?? If they get a quick 2 we probably are forced to wait til 2h

Actually, he has changed in this regard. Used to be 2 fouls in the 1st half was an automatic sit out until the 2nd half but he has shown more flexibility the 2nd half of this season.reef wrote:When was the last time DH played anybody with 2 fouls in the 1h ?? None here. I said Jarvis when this thread first started, but I completely change that now. The ball moves better with Dowtin out there, and the offense is quicker with him right now.
I love Jarvis more than anybody, and next year if he is fully healthy we may have this debate again, but today Dowtin out there is the guy.
