The second ACC game at Barclay's is 9-22 BC versus 18-12 Wake Forest at 2 PM, also on ESPN2. Wake Forest losing here would help the URI cause. GO BC!!

Re: Conference Tournaments
Besides the ACC, two other conferences begin their conference tournaments today.
Big Sky Conference, Conference RPI: #29
#1 seed is North Dakota, 19-9, RPI - 177. All games will played in the 7,500 seat Reno Events Center.
Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), Conference RPI: #31
#1 seed is Texas Southern, 20-11, RPI - 117. The first round games willow campus sites of the higher seed. The rest of tournament will be held in the 18,000 seat Toyota Center in Houston. BTW, Texas Southern owns a win over La Salle who they beat in a November game, 77-76.
Neglected to mention yesterday that the Mid-Eastern Conference opened its tourney yesterday and the first round continues today, so bringing that scene up to date:
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), Conference RPI: #32
The MEAC top seed is North Carolina Central, 19-8, RPI - 219. All rounds of tourney will be played in the 11,000 seat Scope in Norfolk, VA.

Clemson beat NC State. Are they now automatically in the NCAA Tournament (sarcasm) for getting a win in the ACC Tournament despite it being against a team with a losing record?

Northern Kentucky prevailed over Milwaukke, 59-53, to capture the Horizon League title, thus sparing the NCAA from having to give Milwaukee with its 10-23 record and RPI of 256 a dance ticket.
Mt. St. Mary's beat St Francis (PA), 71-61 to take the NEC championship. Nice comeback story for MSM since they started the season, 1-11.

Interesting game between Gonzaga and St. Mary's. The Zags lead 39-18 at the half, but since then St. Mary's has been hitting shots and the margin is now down to 7 with 6 minutes left.

St. Mary's made a run, but could get no closer than 7 and finally fell 74-56 as Gonzaga wrapped up the West Coast Championship. The Zags with a RPI of 10 are most certainly going to be a #1 seed in the NCAA.

The higher seed was the loser in the Summit Championship at Sioux Falls, SD as South Dakota State beat Nebraska-Omaha, 79-77. I guess it helped to have the game played only 58 miles from campus.

That was a great game.
Gonzaga is the real deal.
They really share the ball.
Two 7 footers, and solid guards and forwards.
Williams-Goss is a great player. Very dynamic.
If anyone thinks Karnowski is just 7'1" 300lbs, and not much more,
think again.
He reminds me of the post players I watched before the 3 point line
turned everyone into wing players.
Fundamentally very sound. Passes well, plays near the hoop with
good moves, and best of all, plays defense.
He's so huge, a real space-eater. Hard to get around him.
Plays within himself, never tries to do too much.
Pretty good for a guy who couldn't walk, at this time last year.
Major back surgery was a success, and he came back.
Gonzaga is fun to watch.
St. Mary's has 4 losses this year. 3 to Gonzaga.

I've been super busy with all kinda life stuff, so I haven't posted much recently and although I've said many times this season that being on the bubble doesn't fulfill my personal expectations for this team, it sure does make this part of the season a lot of fun! College Basketball is the zenith of sports entertainment in my world, I do so love when results from other conference tournaments have affects on Rhody's NCAA chances. If we have to break the drought by bursting the bubble that's good with me.

Karnowski types are what basketball needs again. So fun to watch a post player do work in the paint over some half ass three every time down the floor. Although St Mary's has been ranked, i mentioned in the other thread that their resume isn't great.

Consider that just before the Fordham game I did a 2nd Poll asking posters if they thought URI would get invited to the Dance.
Results were 17 said YES, 34 said NO(67%), and this was BEFORE the disastrous Fordham game. If I had asked after the Fordham game the response would most likely have been overwhelmingly NO
Very, very few, IF ANY, would have thought us capable of winning out 5 straight games including on the Road with GMU, LaSalle, St Josephs and Home games with VCU and Davidson
We have put ourselves back into the discussion, after having been far removed after Fordham. Now need at least 2 more wins - but hopefully 3
This was the status when the 2nd Survey was asked:
Now again with 6 games to go plus the A10 Tournament March 8 to March 12
Fordham Wednesday Feb 15 HOME @7:00pm LOST
George Mason Saturday Feb 18 AWAY @ 4:00pm WON
LaSalle Tuesday Feb 21 AWAY @ 6:00pm WON
VCU Saturday Feb 25 HOME @ 2:00pm WON
St Joseph Wednesday Mar 1 AWAY @ 7:00pm WON
Davidson Saturday Mar 4 HOME @ 6:00pm WON

One bid league. Doesn't mean anything for the NCAA Tournament. The Summit regular season champ was knocked out earlier so it does mean one less at large for the NIT. Five or six teams (depending on Illinois State NCAA bid) already have automatic invites to the NIT by virtue of being their conference regular season champion. That number is sure to rise as more leagues tournaments end. The NIT has a field of 32.

Re: Conference Tournaments
Syracuse is first up in about 30 minutes. Here's Assembly Call's view on Syracuse: (18-13) – Normally wins over the likes of Duke, Virginia, and Florida State would make you a lock, but Syracuse has a trio of sub-100 losses and an ugly 2-10 mark in road and neutral games. Six Top 50 wins give them a boost over most of their fellow bubblers, but a loss in their first ACC Tournament game against Miami would leave the Orange sweating.

With Syracuse's loss, bubble teams are 63-52 in games I've tracked. Syracuse will have a projected RPI of 85, they're 2-11 in road/neutral games, and they have a sub 200 loss (Boston College).

Re: Conference Tournaments
Next up, at 2:36, is Clemson vs. Duke. Here's Assembly Call's write up on Clemson: (17-14) – A laundry list of narrow misses has the Tigers just three games over .500 on the season with a profile featuring a handful of good but not great wins. A deep ACC Tournament run is a must if they want any chance of an at-large, and beating NC State on Tuesday was the first step. Things get much tougher with Duke their opponent on Wednesday.
15 is the magic loss number, right? A few teams have been an at large with 14 wins, but never 15? Let's give Clemson their 15th loss and Duke an RPI boost.

Clemson is tied with Duke at the half 33-33. Duke has actually had twice as many fouls called on them as Clemson (12-6) with one of the fouls a technical. Clemson is 16-18 from the line.

I have to actually defend Grayson Allen here for a second (wait sorry just threw up a little saying that), but that technical was kind of dumb call. He just slammed the ball down with two hands because he was frustrated with himself. I've seen guys do way way worse.

Re: Conference Tournaments
So we've gone 2-2 so far today, but we probably won't be going 3-3. The next game up, starting at 5:47, is Cal taking on Oregon State, a team who is 1-17 in the Pac 12. Here's the write up on Cal: (19-11) – The Bears basically got run off the floor in a 30-point loss at Utah on Thursday night and followed that up by losing at Colorado as well. They have just one win over an at-large caliber team, which came against fellow bubbler USC by a single point. At this point a deep run in the Pac-12 Tournament is a must.
They're in almost the same exact spot as Clemson. They're on only a couple bracketmatrix brackets and are trying to hold on to next teams out going into today's game. Unlike Clemson, Cal winning this one won't move the needle on their bubble hopes.

Re: Conference Tournaments
At 7, Wake Forest plays Virginia Tech, a rematch of Saturday's game where Wake Forest won 89-84 in Blacksburg. On Wake Forest: (19-12) – No team did more for its at-large case last week than the Demon Deacons, who picked up a critical home win over Louisville before winning at Virginia Tech on Saturday. Still, they are just 3-8 against the RPI Top 50, but solid KenPom numbers and an impressive non-conference strength of schedule bolster their chances. After beating Boston College on Tuesday, they get another crack at the Hokies on Wednesday.
Wake Forest is on all 132 bracketmatrix brackets. Virginia Tech is considered a lock by Assembly Call, but they're missing from 2 bracketmatrix brackets. Even though they're not unanimous, they're ranked higher than Wake Forest because their average seed is 8.52 as opposed to Wake Forest's 10.58. Frankly, I'm not sure the result of this game is going to matter much to URI, but WF was listed as a bubble team, so here we are.
