Blue - White Scrimmage Results
Tomorrow morning is the Blue White Scrimmage for two hours.
Also could there also be a "secret scrimmage" coming up soon? very soon? Then it wouldn't be a secret would it???

That's some travel. I'm surprised they couldn't scrimmage with like a Bryant or something.

Don't think I could let that scrimmage happen without at least trying to take back one or more Hurleys to the Seahawks.

Re: Blue - White Scrimmage Results
Despite everything I've read and heard I was not ready for the intensity of a Hurley practice. wow. He does not tolerate mental mistakes. No mistake goes unnoticed. There's absolutely zero standing around. It's all business.
The team will play good D and ball movement will be much improved. They might struggle to score, though. Shooting was not good today. Munford being one exception. Malone's shot was off.
Gil looked great. Best player by far. Scores, plays D, great interior passer, hustles, rebounds ...
Nik looked good,too.
Hare rebounded well and alters shots. No offense yet. Aaman looked decent.
Powell looked better but he's not where the Hurleys want him to be yet.
Bigby plays good D, hustles, but would've fouled out if this was a real game.

I don't think they will win many games. But no one will out hustle this team. This will pay dividends in the near future.

Re: Blue - White Scrimmage Results
My observations:
-I feel that Biggie was playing Powell. He asserted his dominance on him the entire first half, and seemed to let up a bit in the 2nd. He (Biggie) also does a fantastic job closing out on shots.
-I raved about how much of a freak athlete Gil is after Madness but after today I'm throwing in his defense, leadership and even his jumper into the mix. Consider me the conductor of the Gilvydas Biruta hype train.
-Reischell seems to be a very even keeled guy. He seemingly stayed in the same calm, relaxed demeanor the entire time.
-Seems like Nik & Dre will get a bulk of the shots.
-I'm a fan of Bigby. Like Iggy noted, he hustled out there and did the nitty-gritty stuff that doesn't show up in the box score. Sort of in the same vein as Malhoit.
-Oneykaba has the size and skills to be a good big at this level, but he has to iron out some kinks. It's expected, but if he's handled correctly, he can be very effective.
-It was good to see Will Martell in attendance sitting at the scorers table. Once the gym cleared out, I hung around, he and Danny were talking. I assume Will was thinking "this couldn't have happened a few years ago?"
-I L-O-V-E this coaching staff. When blue (coached by Carr & Preston) went down 8 early, and Powell made a horrible pass, Preston called for a time and made them run sprints. White made a stop, then busted out an easy fast break...only for Bobby to stop it mid-break, called a TO, and made THEM run sprints. Towards the end, Danny was literally ON THE COURT grabbing at Biggie mid-play. Oneykaba shot a FT to which Danny said something along the lines of "F'ing horrible." LOVE this coaching staff. Love it.
-Anyone else notice that Danny benched Brooks towards the end? Another great move.

Re: Blue - White Scrimmage Results
Can't add too much more than what has been said.
Practice IS all business, cutting and moving, screening, - no simple layup drills. When he gets the team together, they all stand at midcourt - it seems like they stand in the same place every time, and all eyes are on him. Lots of togetherness and team unity, when someone hits the floor, they all go over and see if he's okay.
I have not been to many practices, but this one was organized, without a second of wasted time.
No zone defenses, and I don't think we will see many this year.
I really liked Munford, quick to the basket, hit three three's and will certainly make an impact. Hurt his ankle halfway through, got it taped and went right back out there.
I also like the senior transfer from Boston - alot of hustle and good defense. I have a hunch he's going to get plenty of minutes.
What a great breath of fresh air! Go Rhody!

Re: Blue - White Scrimmage Results
Really enjoyed watching this practice and all 4 coaches' active involvement. It still doesn't seem real to me that we have a coaching staff of this caliber. No weaknesses anywhere.
Practice was very organized and everyone is right... Dan and the other coaches do not tolerate laziness or careless play. I am so excited for Coast Guard.
Also, I don't know about the the others who attended, but I was quite surprised at the turnout. About half of sec 205 was full, and that's a full-sized section. It was great to see so many hard core Rhody fans there!
Dan mentioned keeping us all informed of future open practices later in the season. I'm amped for this year like never before!

I am still optomistic about this years team after watching practice today. I predict that they will finish 5th or 6 in the A10. The only thing that bothers me is the lack of depth and 2 or 3 injuries could be devastating. The more I see of the Hurleys the more I like what I see.I only wish that this change was made about 8 years ago.

Re: Blue - White Scrimmage Results
I noticed that Bobby made it a point to really push Biggie during the drills prior to the scrimmage. I was closer towards the left end (white team,) and Bobby would get vocal with guys, but he seemed to only get really ticked with Biggie messed up. It's a good sign, given that and their twitter back-and-forths, Bobby seems to be taking Biggie under his wing.

Also, I recorded most of the 4th qtr then my battery ran out...after which I noticed the big "NO VIDEOTAPING OR PHOTOGRAPHY DURING THE SCRIMMAGE" sign lol.

As much as I would like to see the footage, it's probably a best bet to avoid it. It's a practice, so they were working on running sets, breaks, and defensive calls, and you wouldn't want to post that stuff.Ryan Rowdy wrote:Also, I recorded most of the 4th qtr then my battery ran out...after which I noticed the big "NO VIDEOTAPING OR PHOTOGRAPHY DURING THE SCRIMMAGE" sign lol.

Yeah, please don't post any video footage. Our team will need all the advantages they can get without having their plays broadcast online ahead of the season.
Plus, we don't want them to shy away from open practices in the future, either.

I loved the scrimmage, I wish gil could play this year. The big O is the definition of raw talent, you could see what he is x capable of but he is clearly still needs a lot of work

That's why I hope Big O uses this year to get better and then maybe we get him for 4 years starting next year....this year is a bridge year...why lose a year of his eligibility if he is so raw.

Agreed. He has the skills, just needs the fine tuning. I noticed the little things like his footwork was a little off, drop step, a little timid, etc.
He can benefit greatly from this year off.

With regards to Onyekaba, that's what only playing organized basketball for a few years will get you. There's an interesting international feel to this team, with Malesevic, Biruta, Reischel, and Onyekaba. Plus Alwayne, but that doesn't really count to me! (sorry Canada)

Right, so he's not really "eligible" in the most practical sense. He's not yet able to play for the 12-13 Rams.

He was also listed on the fan's guide to the scrimmage, a doc distributed to fans so they could familiarize themselves with the players. It was the first time the Big O has been listed on any official Rhody Hoops document.EasyEdBrown wrote:You sure about that? I think the correct status is fully qualified, but ineligible - at this time - to compete this season. Rhody is apparently in the process of petitioning the NCAA to waive this year away from competition.

i got that ATP but i also noticed it looked like he was a late add to the roster
i'm pretty sure he couldn't practice until he was declared qualified. At the very beginning when they were going through offensive sets it looked like they were kind of teaching him as if he just learned them. I don't see how he could practice if he wasn't qualified

Re: Blue - White Scrimmage Results
Some teams will write into a coach's contract that if the coach leaves for another coaching job, he must give them a free home game with his new team (eg VCU with Alabama's Anthony Grant). I'm not implying that this is the case with Wagner and Hurley or that URI should want to play Canisius, only that some programs consider games with ex-coaches a good thing.

True, however, normally those clauses are activated when a coach leaves on their own to upgrade to a better situation -- not when they get canned.

One other observation: Dan Hurley is going to be a great mentor to Preston. During one timeout, Preston lit into Powell for not getting back on D. Was really screaming at him. Never had heard Preston raise his voice before.

Re: Blue - White Scrimmage Results
The assistants take their cue from the head coach...I believe Baron stifled his assistants based upon my observations.
For many years I would eschew my actual seat locations and sit in the lower level behind our bench to observe players and coaches during good times and bad.
My impression was Baron did not want his assistants to assist.
Maybe this is why he has not had any significant branches to his coaching tree.
With success at Rhody I can foresee a Hurley coaching tree with Bob Hurley, Preston, and Carr possibly moving up to head coach jobs in the future...maybe one at Rhody.
