Week #4 - Games of Interest
URI moves up in AP Top 25 poll to #21 with the win over Belmont. Duke stands at #5. In the other votes category finds Cincinnati and Houston. VCU is the only other A-10 team getting votes. Even Rutgers got a vote!
In the USA Today poll, URI remains at #25 position, though the Rams point totals increased from 70 to 116. Duke has the #4 slot. Cincinnati also get votes in poll. Only other A-10 team mentioned is VCU, which got exactly one vote. Kentucky remains #1 in both polls.
Today begins a look at the cumulative won-lost record of URI OOC opponents, a factor contributory to the eventual URI RPI and key to post-season prospects. At the start of week #4, this record stands at 39-27, a winning percentage of .591. This stat is higher than at anytime last season and is further evidence of an improved OOC schedule.
No Monday A-10 games.
In games involving URI OOC opponents:
Dartmouth at Longwood. 7 PM.
Bryant at Brown. 7 PM.

Re: Week #4 - Games of Interest
Brown edged Bryant 91-90
Dartmouth fell to Longwood 80-86
Dartmouth 0-4 they ain't helpin us.
Dan definitely had to give Bobby a phone call after the game tonight.... UK won 115-69
The Sun Devils will need some psycho-therapy after that one.
Kentucky is craaaazy good.

Cmon Dartmouth. You had one job (beat ANYONE).
Bobby's ASU team gave up 110 points to The Citadel last week. That is...not good. If Dan's team gave up 110 points to The Citadel they would have to put him under medical supervision for 24 hours.

Did anyone see how that Bryant vs Brown game ended? Brown hit a layup with 5 seconds left to go up 1, Bryant inbounded and their player thought Bryant was up 1 not down 1, and preceded to dribble out the clock and heave the ball into the air victoriously...only to realize they lost.

Butler with a 9 point win over 4-0 Utah in Salt Lake City. Butler goes to 7-0 and should go higher than their #18 ranking as of today.

We don't want to play them either. What do they bring? We aren't doing a home and home with them, so there's certainly nothing good to come from paying them to drive down from Smithfield. Right?

How many of you think ALL of our next 4 games will be close?
I think they will......it's time to start winning them...no moral victories, no close but no cigar, get both this week at least, and I will finally say that I think we are NCAA tourney worthy.....
Anything less than 3-1, and it could be "the same old story" again......road games will determine our fate....
Win, and keep me from turning into the rabbit from Monty Python and the Holy Grail...a merciless killer......
Whoops, wrong thread...ATP if you read this, move this to the "Tough 4 game stretch ahead" thread......

Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail...want to make sure I say this right...might just be one of THE BEST MOVIES EVER. No offense, but I'm not sure you have the hops or the lateral quickness of that rabbit, do you? That rabbit has one of the quickest first steps I've ever seen....rambone 78 wrote:How many of you think ALL of our next 4 games will be close?

Re: Week #4 - Games of Interest
The only game that really concerns me out of the next four is this Saturday at PC. I watched their last two games. They were awful against Memphis and still won. But mainly I was shocked at how they hung around with Virginia. The game was never really in doubt but PC would just not go away. If they are making their shots early I think we are going to be in for a very tough game.
I've already said Valpo doesn't concern me. I expect a comfortable win tonight. Houston doesn't concern me either. Ton of hype around their team but reality is they've played absolutely no one to date and they needed a last second shot to beat Vermont.
Against ODU, we had every opportunity to beat them at their place last year... without EC and also without Hass for much of the game. We will also be at home. If we win the next 3 we could be looking at a very solid crowd for that game.

RJ, I'd like to think we will win by daylight tonight....but it's a road game....that's what concerns me
We have to perform to win these kind of games...we are better than them but that doesn't guarantee anything.....
Last year we were a bad road team with a lot of the same guys...except at Dayton of course....that has to change...and yes injuries were a big factor, but still....
Who will step up and make the plays to win?

Just curious, why don't the Valpo game and Houston concern you? You sound like the people on the Cincinnati board who said, "URI barely beat Brown, we should win easily".RoadyJay wrote:The only game that really concerns me out of the next four is this Saturday at PC. No, I don't believe in the transitive property with basketball. I just believe we are clearly the better team in both match-ups. I've watched both Valpo and Houston play. We are a veteran, top-ranked team. Have a little confidence. It's actually justified this year.

Re: Week #4 - Games of Interest
The A-10 was 3-2 on Tuesday night. Besides URI losing, Saint Louis lost at home in a "buy game" with Samford.
Davidson went on the road and easily defeated Mercer, 78-57. Gibbs put in 33 points with of 8 treys! Now that's outside shooting to admire.
VCU trailed Princeton for most of game, but came back to win, 81-70, on the back of JeQuan Lewis' 25 points.
GW beat Harvard, 77-74.
In games involving URI OOC opponents:
William & Mary fell at Central Michigan, 91-81.
UMass-Lowell loses to Marist, 81-69.
Belmont edged Lipscomb, 64-62 coming back from a 13 point halftime deficit.
Houston suffered its first loss as LSU pulled away in second half to win, 84-65.
Michigan State trailing Duke, 70-59, late in game.
Elsewhere,
Delaware State became an unruly guest as they upset, St. John's 79-72 for their first D-1 win of season. So much for great scrimmages.
In The Voice contest, South County's Billy Gilman advanced to the round of eight. Hey, at least somebody from South County won something tonight!

District Baller [VCU fan on the A10 board] knows his shit.....
Except Dan's players like him, supposedly.....but he's right when he says Dan can't bench coach......
And I'm not totally sold on Dan's recruiting either...it's been good, not great....after Hass leaves, we could be in trouble in the frontcourt [even worse than we are now]

Re: Week #4 - Games of Interest
Davidson, VCU, and Dayton will give us a run for our money in the A10.......the middle of the league will still be tough for us on the road...always has, and no reason to think otherwise.....
If we end up in the NIT, I will [to take a page from TP] really set myself on fire....and if I survive that, wait until I'm 90, or whenever we finally hire a coach that can coach......

It's too early to be talking about the NIT. Even though last nights loss showed how many issues there still potentially are with this team it could very well be a loss to a top 50 rpi team on the road. It's not like we lost to Dartmouth at home.

So far Wednesday games are turning out no so good forA-10:

Sacred Heart upsets Fordham, 71-70. Fordham led most of the game and had a 11 point lead with 5 minutes to go when SHU went on a tear to tie game at 66 with two minutes left. SHU got its winning bucket on a lay-up with 2 seconds left after a Fordham turnover.
La Salle beats Lehigh, 89-81. The Explorers were in command the entire second half.
Wagner gave UMass a tussle before falling, 62-55. Mike Aaman was Wagner's leading scorer with 17 points.
Behind most of game, Richmond fell to Bucknell, 73-68.

Re: Week #4 - Games of Interest
In games involving URI OOC opponents:
PC easily beat UNH, 76-62. Bullock put in a career high 36 points. A crowd of 4,801 came out in big, downtown Providence on a Tuesday night, so we don't have to be defensive about the Belmont crowd during the holiday period with no students around.
Holy Cross edged Albany, 55-49.
St. Francis (NY) lost to Brown, 81-71. Brown led comfortably throughout game.
Dartmouth lost to Old Dominion, 59-47. The Big Green did put on a good running second half led by Evan Boudreaux to cut the ODU margin to 4 with less than two minutes left.

Re: Week #4 - Games of Interest
Damn, I feel like every year under Cooley another player emerges for PC. This year it's Rodney Bullock dropping 36 tonight and averaging 19 for the year.
Bullock was not a highly regarded recruit either. Would be nice to an under the radar recruit for URI emerge. 4 ESPN Top 100 recruits on the roster right now for URI...

Not a good night at all for the A 10
Hopefully we can contain Bullock on Saturday

Re: Week #4 - Games of Interest
No A-10 games on Thursday night and there is only one game involving URI OOC opponents, but that one presents an interesting match-up as unranked Cincinnati travels to Ames, Iowa to play the #19 Iowa State Cyclones. Game time is 9 PM and the game will be on ESPN.
