Great for the perception of the league. Also great it's one of the RPI bottom dwellers completely turning their program around.

Travis Ford can recruit.
But can he coach them up?
Evidence to date says he can't.....

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
There are always some coaches who, fairly or not, get the talk about something extra going on with recruiting. Ford is one of them. That being said, he should do very well at Saint Louis. It's an excellent program, with a long history of fan support. This will likely be another down year, but they won the conference as recently as 2014 and went to the tournament from 2012-14.
They're a bit of an outlier geographically for the conference, which is why they get brought up when expansion/moving conferences is mentioned. At the same time, their location is a huge recruiting advantage for players who want to stay relatively close to home and play at a certain level. There are simply less options and more space compared to the northeast.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Travis Ford is slimy and uses every trick in the book. SLU is desperate to return its basketball program to championship level and have likely given Ford many resources.
Plus, the promise of instant playing time cannot be overlooked. The cupboard is fairly bare for SLU with Crews' recruits, so Ford can promise these recruits and transfers instant playing time upon arrival/qualification.
Hey, it has worked for UMass (good recruiting class when team is depleted).

Part of it is probably the utter implausibility of anyone actually wanting to play for Travis Ford, all things being equal.ace wrote:There are always some coaches who, fairly or not, get the talk about something extra going on with recruiting. Ford is one of them.

It worked well for us too, Hurley's best recruiting classes in terms of player rankings have been his first two.ATPTourFan wrote:Travis Ford is slimy and uses every trick in the book. SLU is desperate to return its basketball program to championship level and have likely given Ford many resources.

We might need more size, along with a wing for next season. Next season it's Langevine, Layssard, and Tertsea and that's it....of the 3, Cyril is obviously going to get serious minutes, the other two who knows right now.....
I know we only have one opening, but you never know.....

Berry's big, and Akele's tall, but neither are the answer in the frontcourt.....again, role players for us, not stars.....imo anyway.....

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Maybe we should see Tertsea, Layssard and Cyril plays a few games before we decide they aren't enough? Tertsea is a legit Center in terms of size. Layssard and Langevine protypical PF size. Plus Andre and Nikola. That's already 5 guys for 2 spots at most. If we return our entire back court next season then we don't need a front court star, we need rebounding, blocks and everything else. My guess is DH uses the last scholly on a Juco or 5th Year who can make an immediate impact.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
I'd still like to see a pure scoring forward in the 6'6"-6''8" range.
A Will Daniels type, who can score inside and outside.
He was the last guy we had who fit that description.
I still see Dan as guard-centric.
Four guards might work in the A-10, but in the bigger picture,
You need more than one 6'7" or 6'8" center to compete
with the big boys in tournaments and pre-conference
games with the likes of Kansas, Arizona,SMU,etc.
Guards are great, but balance is better.

Our frontcourt will clearly be a weakness next season, as it stands now........we need exactly what Rod just said...and it won't be easy to find someone like that...might need to go the transfer or 5th year route.....bring in ready made experience.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Heh? I don't get this thinking...our front court has been Hassan for the last 2-3 years, and now we have 3 potential A10 caliber big men in the fold. They are Freshmen, and only 1 of them is even seeing the court this year thus far, so how the hell can you know it will be a weakness next season? Can we let them get their feet wet, develop and then make such generalized statements about them. It's ridiculous.
I would love a Will Daniels type as well, who wouldn't -- Dan has mentioned wanting a stretch 4 for a few years now, it's just not that easy to find. I think our last recruiting class is an indication that Dan understands we need size to compete beyond the A10.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
When I said weakness I should have said that it won't be as strong as our backcourt....they will still be only sophomores....there's no way they will be as advanced as our guards.....big men take longer to develop anyways....
We don't know how good they will become..Cyril does look very promising though, but we need at least one other [most likely Layssard] to develop enough to help us counter the bigger front lines we'll face at some point.
So Bar you don't need to jump off the deep end.....overreaction for sure

I saw AJ Reeves and David Duke at the game. I don't know what Preston Santos looks like. There was another huge kid there as well that looked like a possible recruit but can't figure out if it was anyone. Maybe it was Santos. They were in section 106. Looks like they had family with them.

Santos is about 6"5, long and lean athlete. I saw Hendricken play last year and I think he has much more potential than Mazzulla, their star player at the time.BleedBlue87 wrote:I saw AJ Reeves and David Duke at the game. BillyBoy,
Wouldn't you think that St Andrews would have scheduled their Saturday game such that players would be able to go to the URI-PC Game at 4:30pm?

We need solid ready made bigs in the worst way....Dan should be focused on that much more than more guards.....
This team needs to be much more balanced.....
Any good big he could bring in, will get serious minutes....or should. Promise of PT should help, in spite of DH's guard oriented rep.

See any PFs here or offered? Nope!
See any centers here or offered? Nope!
See anyone who looks like a flat our scorer? Nope!
Lots of PGs and SGs, a couple of 180 lbs. SFs, though.
Balance? Post play?What's that?

Rod, my guess is, DH is looking for a transfer/5th year guy for next season.....or he'd better be anyway......
Since we have a couple guys who aren't playing, maybe we will have another opening...you never know.....
Getting a 4 year big who can play right away, is a major challenge for this staff......Cyril might be the exception.....

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
I think getting a 4 year big who can play, and contribute, right away is a challenge for pretty much every staff in the country outside the top 25 or so programs. Cyril is playing and contributing in Hassan's absence.rambone 78 wrote:Rod, my guess is, DH is looking for a transfer/5th year guy for next season.....or he'd better be anyway......

Have we played against any Freshmen big men this year (non Duke) that you'd prefer to Cyril? Honest question- I haven't looked back and don't recall any.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
I have no problem with Langevine going forward.
He's no Martin when it comes to blocking shots, though.
However, we lose Hassan and Iverson, our two starters
and #1 and 2 rebounders.
Who's your power forward next year?
Akele sure isn't one.
So, you have Berry, Laysard and Tertsea on scholarship,
but one plays sparingly, one never plays and one is
a redshirt.
That's a quarter of your scholarships tied up in non playing status.

I liked your Gomes comment. I'm in your camp when it comes to wanting to see Laysard get some time. Honestly, I'd highly prefer that to Berry to see what we have. Obviously Hurley sees it every day at practice, but you'd have to imagine he can't be that far behind Bery as-is and as a semi highly-touted freshmen has a much higher ceiling.

104, I'm on board with Cyril but like Rod said, we need more...what if Layssard and Tertsea don't develop to where they are solid contributors?
We need at least one more solid big...or else the unbalanced lineup will be even more so next season.....you can see where we're lacking up front with Hassan out...just a little preview of next season if nothing is done......
There will be some available later on......transfers and 5th year I mean.......

Does anyone know if it's possible for Layssard to still redshirt? That's about the only reason I can think of that they'd not put him in at all anymore.

No. Once you play the only way to redshirt is due to a season ending medical issue towards the beginning of the year.

Geez, look at this list of offers for '18.
Nothing but PGs and SGs.
Does Hurley think we play in an under 6' league?
We desperately need forwards who can score and rebound.
This guard obsession is getting out of hand.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Hi Rod. So glad you are back.
I think we can see a greater view of the recruiting strategy Hurley's staff is employing.
Because there are many more talented guards available, the staff targets a handful and gets in early as that has paid big dividends in the past. They clearly have a good story to tell for guards and have recruited above the typical A10 level in this space.
For the big guys, since there much fewer of them in the talent space we really need to consistently contend in the A10, you will see years where the staff feels they can get that kind of size/talent combination via Juco or 5th year grad transfer method. It's just a fact that the truly good bigs are a low percentage play for the traditional recruiting methods because the power conferences (and big east) will almost always scoop them up.
So when you don't see "bigs" on the publicly trackable recruiting sites and here on KeaneyBlue, you know the staff isn't just ignoring that part of the roster. They are instead putting feelers out for talented bigs who are in Juco ranks, or looking to exercise their right to grad-transfer.

I agree, we need more bigs. But in '18, we lose EC, Jared, Jarvis and Stan, along with Andre. So, we will be replacing the 4 guards who play the most minutes. Ideally, in the '18 class, I'd like to see 3 guards and 2 bigs with 5 schollies that will be available. Obviously, the '18 recruiting class will be a critical class going forward.

I'm not talking centers.
I'm talking about forwards, who are not that rare.
6'6"-6'8" guys who can score and rebound.
Nearly every decent team has them, why not us?
Fact: URI has not had a scoring forward since
Delroy James!

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
We do tend to come up short against teams that have those kinds of forwards...like Peters of Valpo, Bullock at PC, and Pollard at Dayton.....among others.
Those guys tend to have career days against us, and are the difference in many close games.
We have no one at present to contend with those types.....
Like ATP said, we're going after transfers, jucos, and 5th years......at least that's what Dan hinted at the show.....and there's a possibility that we could add TWO such players for next year....read what you will into that.
