What worries me is what is going to happen with the frontcourt. We know what we have. Hass, Kuran and Akele, but we really don't know how effective those 3 bigs are going to be next year. They're gonna be thrown into the fire a little bit.
Like the Duke game with their 5 star big guys....

I didn't say it was a fluke but ultimately it was a bad team upsetting a good team and had very little impact on our season. It was one of the only bright spots of this past season but now that we're in the off season I think that game means very little going forward. Do you think DePaul is still talking about how they beat PC?

I disagree that it means nothing. I think it proved to the staff that these guys can beat the best of the conference on the road and it was also huge for our young guys confidence. Especially Berry!

Re: Early Top 25 Lists for 2016-17
Not sure how any fan can be mad at being ranked in pre-season....it does mean something, it means publicity and attention, which turns into more interest and more dollars if they back it up on the court. This will finally be a veteran, experienced team with young depth at all positions. That is a good formula to slowly integrate the new faces without much expectation.
Stan Robinson I would guess will see time at the 1,2 and 3...pending the situation. I would expect Layssard to see the most time of the FR...cant see how Dowtin sees much PT unless we get the injury bug again. Tertsea and Langevine somewhere in the middle.

With all due respect, I saw him play a few times while he was in high school, albeit on TV, and saw Indiana numerous times his two years there.
He's fast, he's fearless driving to the hoop.
He doesn't -- from what I even saw at open practice/before home games -- have a consistent, comfortable shooting touch.
My main points:
1) was to the Jarvis G. comparison/no drop-off as a ball-handler/play-maker; and,
2) was to the Buchanan comparison (already explained).
My mistake.
I'm guilty.
I've ripped the perception of the player others are projecting, not what I've seen or his track record.
If I'm a NITWIT, fine.
During his time here, if the coach and his assistants turned him into something else, transformed into a shooter who's an outstanding defender, FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope he can score like Silk Owens, can pace and pass like Tyson Wheeler, has the innate abilities of Sly and Lamar combined, and Stanley Wright's class.
If not, no big deal.
I wasn't the one foisting an almost undeliverable prognostication.
And you're accusing me of selling him short? How about looking in the mirror and accusing yourselves of setting-up the guy for failure with your "KeaneyBlue Early Top 25 Lists for 2016-17 Club Fantasies"?

With Grayson Allen coming back, Duke should be pretty much everyone's preseason #1- and they still have a very good chance to get Marques Bolden. That's a crazy big and talented roster.

Even though Nebraska was severely overrated I would list the home win against them at number 2 with LSU 3. I think having a packed student section on hand for what was a top 25 opponent and the ending has helped bring more students to games along with the team's improvement. Plus I think ending the long streak of not being able to beat a ranked opponent has to have helped their confidence.

I think beating a pretty good, 20 win NIT, LSU team on the road.
in a losing season, was pretty remarkable.
Gil outplaying a couple of future NBA draft picks,
was the best of his career, too.
Nebraska would up having a losing season, so in retrospect,
that was really nice at the time, but ultimately a nothing win.

I agree with you that on just on court merits the LSU game was better. I only have Nebraska ahead because of program building benefits I think we got from that win.

And, while the win meant less in retrospect because of Nebraska's collapse...At the time it happened, it was gi-normous. Couldn't be at the game, but still remember seeing our son and daughter storming the court on TV. When was the last time the building had that kind of court-storming emotion? In reality, 16th is a ridiculously high rank. But it shows the pull Hurley seems to have with the press. The reality is this team has done nothing yet. I'll take it though. But pretty much the opposite end of the spectrum from the al skinner years fighting for publicity. I will take some al skinner results.

The thing is though, no team in the country has done anything next season yet, since it hasn't started and all. A 2016-17 Top 25 list is based solely on how people think teams will be next year. It's not based on how you finished the year before or what you did previously.

Re: Early Top 25 Lists for 2016-17
Yeah, as Adam said, no team's done anything yet, and it's been acknowledged this is all way too early. That being said, the starting lineup of freshmen and sophomore level Garrett, Terrell, Matthews, and Martin led this team to a second place conference finish. Garrett and Terrell got better this past season under some difficult circumstances, we know that injuries derailed the other two. Iverson averaged 10 and 7 and proved that he could fit in with this team and contribute. They add Robinson and should get something from the current group of freshmen and sophomores. It's not the name- ASU isn't getting any attention. I don't think it gives these players the credit they deserve to say it's some kind of media attention for the coach. The opportunity is there.

in Phoenix, AZ. IF we stay healthy and E.C. comes back to the NBA talent I know he is. Ramster (sp) made some great posts!
If we win the A-10 we could be as high as a #3 seed if we perform well in our OOC. I am from CT and now living in NYC. Several years ago I saw Kuran playing at Northwest Catholic High is West Hartford. Now watching him at URI is fun. I love me some URI hoops baby!!!!!!!

Re: Early Top 25 Lists for 2016-17
I love Rhody basketball as much as the next guy, but preseason 15 is a bit excessive.
Obviously, it's great publicity, but preseason 15 is borderline "this team could make the elite eight."
Indiana was AP Preseason 15th last year, for comparisons sake.
Again, I love the national recognition we're receiving, I'm just going to temper the expectations until the games are played.

#15 Ranking:
- Puts URI the top team in New England ahead of #22 Connecticut
- Only A10 team ranked
- Ahead of #16 Gonzaga (DH wanted to make URI the Gonzaga of the East?)
- Ahead of that dreaded Turgeon led Maryland thugs
- No Cinncinnati ranking so URI vs Duke would be the dream matchup at Mohegan
- We return all 5 starters with 3 Senior and 2 Junior Level players plus Robinson, Thompson, Berry, Akele, with freshmen Langevine, Dowtin, Tertsea and Layssard all capable of contributing year 1
- love the publicity
- Makes for a nice summer - and did I forget to mention no PC?

It's funny some fans would prefer we were not being mentioned in these articles. Ass backwards logic.
Obviously preseason polls are just that, but it is a great thing to get all of these mentions in the spring/summer. As ramster points out, its great marketing and can help juice ticket sales and interest for next year.

I'm all for the hype. But URI has been hyped before. So...
I'd rather they be not hyped and perform at a high level than hyped and not perform (which has happened more often than not).
Call me negative (I've been called worse) but I'm tired of the hype. It's like playing pick up hoops with a guy who talks a lot of trash but just isn't that good. It's pretty annoying.

But, for as fun as it is to be a part of the underdog narrative, "school that gets no respect comes from out of nowhere to make a great run," you know what happens way more often? The teams that are predicted to be good turn out to be good. It's good to be one of those teams.

Exactly.
And PMM of course we all want the team to exceed expectations this season, but it isn't a bad thing to actually have high expectations. It sells the product, which is still part of the job for DH and the program. There is absolutely nothing bad about getting pre-season love.

If the hype was coming from URI, that would be one thing. When it's coming from outside sources, that's not trash talk or anything of that nature. Other people have brought up several positives to these rankings already, but another thing to keep in mind is if you're in the national press like this preseason it can mean an invite to the dance over another team or better seeding. It's easier to stay at the top then to try and break into it.
