Cameron continues to play well for Stoke City in the Premier League as they upset 3rd place Manchester City 2-0 yesterday. Very strong defensive game for Geoff.

What the hell does this have to do with Cameron? It also appears to be dated and not in any way relevant to anything, especially considering this thread has been inactive for four months. What am I missing?

I love soccer and played it for all my life but pro soccer is embarrassing with the flopping and fakes injuries where guys get carried off the pitch in a stretcher only to sub right back in.
It is a beautiful game played by too many sissies.

Well most fans of the University would say the most exciting thing in the thread is an alum excelling on the biggest stage in the world for their profession. And most people find Jim Rome terrible, not exciting.NYGFan_Section208 wrote:What...10 posts in almost three years? I thought this thread was about soccer...? And, I DO think it is funny that:
-someone (else - on this board) said "It is a beautiful game played by too many sissies"
-many have said, 'the referees are tougher than the players.'
I can't stand soccer and am not 'randomly' criticizing it, I'm pretty consistent there...
Like it if you want, but please don't get on my case with -> 'this board is about URI basketball' <- under a thread with a heading that seems to pretty clearly indicate otherwise...
That there was nothing on this thread for months, until I introduced a little Rome humor to the discussion...seems like a pretty good indicator of how popular and captivating the sport is among those on this board...just sayin'....

Everyday that URI has an alum starter on the World Cup team? BPL?
This isn't a discuss soccer thread as much as a "wow good for Cameron thread."
Also there are threads all over this board that discuss things that are outside of basketball but URI connected.

208 my point was this is a thread about a player from URI that is playing great for our national team. No need to post a video that makes fun of his sport. Geoff doesn't flop; He's a great player that is extremely hard working and very tough. If you don't like soccer I could care less but I'm going to defend it when you say comments like that.

...'is playing' seems to imply 'now' or 'currently'...and nobody even cared enough to post a single word about it from December, until I did in April...4 months later. I'll watch the world cup as long as (if?) the US is in it, because I wouldn't want to miss that 'Miracle on Ice' type moment, but other than that...no thanks. And EVERY sport should have (probably does have) videos that make fun of it. Our 'favorites aren't exempt from that.steveystuds06 wrote:208 my point was this is a thread about a player from URI that is playing great for our national team... Cameron's friends and family (aka 'most of the soccer audience') should be very proud.
Not trashing the guy at all, never said a single negative word about him.

Nothing personal, but, from the previously posted list:
Soccer fans justify the activity based entirely on its popularity. Not only are the reasons why soccer is popular an argument against soccer, but it really shows how pathetic said activity is when that is the only argument soccer fans come up with.
And, the fact remains...no one here had a word to say about the 'most popular sport in the world - even tho a Rhody guy was on its biggest stage' for four months...until someone cracked on it, then the indignation began.
Even the HuffPo (which also sucks) says that soccer sucks:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/cenk-uygu ... 24781.html
Articles about why soccer sucks, like this one, are hilarious:
http://sportzedge.com/2014/07/01/7-reas ... -of-sucks/
In fairness, there are probably many articles about why real sports like baseball, basketball, football and hockey suck, too...I love those sports, but would probably get a laugh out of such articles.
Cheers!

One post of news in Dec 2015...previous post 2013..... Where he at? What he up to? How he doing?

That the United States men's national team is not a perennial top 10 team worldwide is an indictment on US Soccer.
I realize that this country doesn't send 90% of its elite athletes into soccer, but the sheer output of elite athletes in the US is plenty enough to man a team that can belong on the same field as the other elite national squads each year.

When the US wants to be the best at something, we usually get it done. We just don't care as much about soccer.

Re: Arsenal 3-1 Stoke City: Cameron Scores First BPL Goal
A lot more people care than ever before, that is for sure. They've said in the past that soccer was about to take off in the U.S. and so people dismiss it when it is said now. But the TV ratings for European leagues are up, all American sports networks are bidding on the rights and are airing and covering the sport regularly. Attendance, revenue and (importantly) quality of play are all up for MLS, which will probably never compete with the Premier League but can help foster interest in the sport among Americans.
I don't know when the U.S. will be able to break through internationally. We have been pretty competitive for a while now but have never been a legit threat to win a World Cup. Our best generation of players is about to age out of the game, but the last several generations of players have each been our best yet until the next generation stepped into their shoes and surpassed them. There are really promising players in the pipeline who will hopefully continue that trend, and maybe that generation or the one after it will be the one that finally becomes a legit contender on a global basis.

I feel like it is more of an issue that USA isn't elite at soccer and everyone is used to the USA being elite at everything.
USA teams haven't had that contender that can go all the way but US soccer has been good. I think it is more about waiting for truly special talent to come along. If we are lucky enough to put something special together, then I bet national soccer will go back down to what we are used to after that special period.

Re: Arsenal 3-1 Stoke City: Cameron Scores First BPL Goal
Being good at soccer is not just about being an elite athlete. It's about development which is why the US is so far behind other countries. Take a player like Messi for example, he was pulled out of Argentina when he was around 12 years old to be put in the Barcelona academy where he received some of the best coaching in the world. He would have probably been a very good player anyways but in Europe it's all about finding the talent as early as possible and giving those players the best training possible. These academies also preach development and most don't care about winning and losing, which is an idea that would seem foreign to any AAU player in today's game youth game.ATPTourFan wrote:That the United States men's national team is not a perennial top 10 team worldwide is an indictment on US Soccer.

Also if I remember correctly Kobe made a comment a year or two ago about how Europe could eventually pass us in basketball because they're actually teaching the game to younger players while here in the US it's all about making a highlight tape to try and get a scholarship to a D1 school.
Lastly to everyone who has said soccer is boring, there's a reason why football is only popular in one country. Only sport where a game lasts 3 and a half hours yet you only see maybe 20 min of actual play.

Re: Arsenal 3-1 Stoke City: Cameron Scores First BPL Goal
This is a dinosaur way of thinking. It's also obviously wrong, since the U.S. is already good at soccer, it just isn't one of the very elite soccer nations yet. As I mentioned before, the "ignorance is cool" soccer-hating thing that was popular among dumb sports fans of a certain age in the late 90s has lost the culture war on soccer. The metrics are not debatable - the demand for the sport at its highest level has led to all of the major European soccer leagues to be broadcast live in the U.S., the attendance and overall health of MLS is on a steady incline, and anecdotally this generation of sports fan cares more and knows more about the game of soccer globally than they do about American sports like hockey.NYGFan_Section208 wrote:I think the US will be 'good at soccer', right after we adopt the metric system....

Exactly. Knocking soccer because it's boring is just beating a dead horse. I find baseball boring as hell for the most part but I'm not going to go into the baseball thread and post about how baseball sucks because it's a waste of time especially if I'm talking to people who actually like baseball.
Also I'm not sure if you're being serious 208 but we are closing the gap although it may take awhile because as I said in my post above soccer is about development. Soccer is similar to hockey in the fact that you don't see people picking up the sport in high school and then playing D1/going pro because both sports require more than just raw athleticism. I personally think the US will eventually compete with the top countries like we do with hockey. We may never be the best but we should eventually compete at the highest level.

The one advantage that soccer has against hockey in terms of getting the best American athletes is that there is no bar to entry in terms of equipment and facilities like there is in hockey. Hockey will never be a big sport in the urban areas that produce the best athletes in the U.S., but soccer can be played basically anywhere by anyone. All you need is a ball and a moderate amount of open space.

Yep. There are plenty of boring sports and soccer is not close to the top of the list.
