Re: Where Are They Now? Former Player Results and News
I like this about Iverson and Layssard from the Munford Projo article...............
Munford totaled eight points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals in the loss to Golden State. He’s shooting 47.8 percent from the field through 11 games and has seen his minutes rise over his last six, averaging 21.8 per game. Munford’s signing adds him to the list of St. Benedict’s players who were helped by Hurley in the early stages of their careers, including Tristan Thompson, J.R. Smith, Lance Thomas and Samardo Samuels.
It’s Hurley’s hope to grow that list during his remaining years at URI, with guard E.C. Matthews popping up on potential draft boards before his season-ending right knee injury last fall and Kuran Iverson earning positive reviews from scouts thanks to his length and passing ability at 6-foot-9.
Rams’ assistant coach Antonio Reynolds-Dean believes incoming freshman Mike Layssard could also have the tools to one day play at the next level, a professional path out of URI kick-started by Munford after a 17-year drought.
“He’s offering them a realistic perspective on what it is,” Hurley said. “He gives a reality to their dreams and goals. He gives a reality to those things for them.”

Interesting how a player from Hurley's first year at URI is in the NBA for the first time for Rhody since Lamar Odom and Jim Harrick. Jerry D and Jim B produced none. And we have Mathews and Iverson and Layssard all mentioned in today's article as POSSIBLE others. I emphasize possible as nobody in the article predicted that they would be in the NBA.

Q: You've mined and may have come up gold with Xavier Munford just as you did with JaMychal Green. How would you evaluate those players given they've been put in an unexpected, expanded role?
A: I'm very proud of both of those guys. They were given a golden opportunity to make the case that they're NBA players. He's played more games than anybody has for us this year. JaMychal has proven he's an NBA rotation player. Xavier came from further off the beaten path than JaMychal. Xavier had never been in an NBA training camp. Xavier had never had a call-up. But he's got good size and is very long and rangy. He's got good potential defensively. When he's out there, it looks like he belongs and he does well. The coaching staff and his teammates are getting more and more confidence in him. You always have to be projective with younger players. He's a major upward curve that's very intriguing for us in the future.

Is X the seventh URI Ram to play in the league? Claude English, Sly Williams, Tommy Garrick, Cuttino Mobley, Tyson Wheeler (one game), Lamar Odom and now X. Did I forget someone?

Similarly, the Celtics signed John Holland to a contract. He graduated from BY in 2011 and has knocked around Europe since then. Played recently in the D League.

Earlier I was focusing on NBA only. I'm told that Steve Chub in could have played in the NBA but was a head case. I believe Ernie Calverly and Earl Shannon also played together at Pawtucket East maybe?
I think Martin and Matthews may have NBA potential. Need to see how Matthews responds after blowing out his knee.

Chubin was an ABA'er and lots of stories behind "The Man," if you know what I mean. Interestingly, when he played on the Minneapolis Pipers (Pittsburgh), teammates included the great, great Connie Hawkins, Art Heyman, Tony Jackson, Big Tom Hoover, Chico Vaughn, and LeRoy Wright, father of two-you-should-know-whom!Ramblinrose wrote:Earlier I was focusing on NBA only. Quite the roster of characters, immortalized in "Foul," by David Wolf and Connie Hawkins. If you've never read it, do yourselves a favor!

Watching the grizz get beat down by the clippers. X has missed 3 wide ope threes. One length of the court drive to the basket. Memphis as a whole is looking rough out there.

Xavier getting the most minutes of anyone. Cotton just entered in the backcourt with X. Xavier has 11 points on 5-11, 0-3 from 3, 3 boards, 4 assists. Commentators talked about his toughness, fearless. Getting blown out but Munford looked like he belonged.

Re: Where Are They Now? Former Player Results and News
It was an ugly game. He really plays within himself out there, really has that running floater down, scored three baskets doing that. Had he made any of those threes he would've really made an impact. If he were a little more aggressive I think he would be more effective. But he's doing the right thing, just playing within himself and not being careless with the basketball. Just awesome watching him out there

URI shoukd recruit a Connie Hawkins type? Sure, they're everywhere.
Some would tell you Hawkins was a shell by the time he got to the NBA, that his be test years were in the ABA ...very little captured on film.

Always great to watch in a Rhody uniform, even more fun in a grizzlies uniform, he definitely looks like he belongs, setting screens, jumps shots, taking it to the rim. He brings the ball up with confidence too.

The Grizzlies get the Spurs in the first round. This won't end well for them, but it'll still be fun watching X on the big stage.

Re: Where Are They Now? Former Player Results and News
Unfortunately Munford will probably not look great in the playoffs, as the Grizz are way undermanned and need some miracle performances to even make a close series of it against the Spurs. Last night 4 pts, 4 ast, 3 stl and 2-9 shooting in 28 minutes (more time logged than Jordan Farmar the starter who had 22 minutes).
A lot of one on one play with Stephenson and Tony Allen jacking up some ill advised shots with little passing. Xavier doesn't have the cohesiveness with this group yet to rein things in. Isaiah Thomas (the young one) talked about how the late season deal to the Celtics last year was rough for getting in work with his teammates. You are playing every other night and can't get used to the tendencies of where everyone would like to receive the ball in a practice setting. So no matter how X looks the remainder of this series I think a full NBA training camp will help him improve for next season.

I don't really know much about the Memphis head coach, Dave Joerger, but after seeing his post-game press conference today, I like him (I like emotional coaches... who knew?!). I hope X gets to stick around next season. San Antonio was a tough match-up and Memphis certainly had their share of injuries, but Munford was a legitimate piece of their line-up the entire time he was with the team. It's a good story and a credit to who he is as a professional.

It really is encouraging. The D League is the dregs. And most players don't get to the NBA. X could have gone to Europe but stuck it out.

Did anyone ever find out when he actually
lefty URI, and where, if any place, did he go?
He didn't hone his game in college, and didn't
even bother playing AAU in high school.
Just never seemed to love the game enough
to commit to it.

Munford was a long shot to make the NBA. Hare might be the all time longshot. Sad, really. The kid had a chance to be something and just didn't seem to care, for whatever reason. Imagi me putting Munford's heart in Hare's body.

Randy was our version of a hockey goon. He was 6-9 and maybe 275. He split time early on with Vic soares. Didn't play as much after Irving Chatman arrived. You know how today's giants like to fire from the three point line. Randy was the opposite of that.

Re: Where Are They Now? Former Player Results and News
He was pretty good until he blew out his knee.
Back then, those things hampered or ended careers.
He used to have great games against Bob Miisceviscus
of PC.
Two huge men, but Wilds would play his best.
He also played well against a good 7' named Bob Pidoukas
from Washington State.
Best Wilds story: we were losing pretty good to PC
in their "home" game at the PCC.
A guy for PC named Rich Hunger started hot dogging it,
a couple of slam dunks, staring down our guys.
I turned to someone I was with and said,
"Randy will get him next time."
Well, we were pounding PC at our"home" game at the PCC,
and Wilds clothes-lined Hunger coming across mid court. Out cold.
PC guys got all pissed off, but nobody wanted any
part of Man Mountain Wilds, who later became
a professional wrestler.
Wilds used to run mid court picks for Jiggy Williamson, and guys would
hit him and drop like a stone.
At ODU, Wilds started a riot, that resulted in Claude English
decking people coming out of the stands.
Hockey type stuff.
Ah, those were the days......

I don't remember him as a wrestler. That would make sense. Randy game would not work out today in more finesse times. I remember the Rich Hunger business. Never knew what hit him.
Randy was from Miami. Considered a pretty good recruit. Yes, he had a bad knee and got huge. You're right about knees then. A blown out knee essentially ended Marc Upshaw's NBA hopes. If E.C. Matthews' injury happened then, it might have been tragic.

Randy was/is a great guy. Knee really hampered his senior yr. Wrestling just seemed to be the normal progression for him. He also was a very good HS quarterback. He'd throw 70 yd passes to Jiggy prior to practice on the football field. those guys all played more than 1 sport in HS. Not like today. Rod was right about the game against Washington St. They had Podakis & another 7', Stuart House. Randy & Vic Soares ate them up that night.
