Re: Here We Go Again...
I've stayed out of this conversation because I have felt there is no chance it's happening, but I will say I am surprised to see so many people worried about it. Most of the season was spent around here talking about how bad of a coach he was, so I was actually expecting more people to be glad if he would leave.

Re: Here We Go Again...
Hurley took the brunt of the losing, but should it have been on the players instead? For the non con, we had Hassan, Jarvis, Terrell, Four, Iverson, Watson and the freshman Thompson, Akele and Berry. All healthy and only EC with injury, and ended at 8-5 with no good wins. I prefer to put it on Hurley. But I can be convinced that the players didn't perform to their preseason hype.

ATP has become the Sean Hannity of KB.
He's going to George's with his pom poms.
As for as CSU, Waters lost almost his entire team, not
just the transfer to WSU.
AS for Stanford, does anyone in his/her right mind
actually for a second think Stanford is going
to call Dan?
Seriously?
Just some off the wall stuff here today.

ACC/B10 would be my guess.
In NE there's only BC and UConn, I doubt the former and no way the latter......

Re: Here We Go Again...
I think UConn is exactly the type of job he should be thinking about next. Will that happen next year or the year after? Of course not. UConn won't need a coach and he wouldn't be in contention if they did. I don't think Hurley has a ton more stops left in his career. I'd like to see him build this thing here for a while and position himself to be in play for a national job when the time does come. The Shaka model.

Unless its Herb Sendek or Dan wouldn't most of their candidates still be playing basketball games?
The AD said he wanted to move quick, didnt see anywhere that he set a hard deadline for Wednesday...is he trying to get it in before spring break or something?

If Dan isn't the guy, then I would think it will take longer than this week [especially Wednesday] to hire somebody.
I really doubt they are going to hire somebody who is out of coaching, like Fraschilla.......
But it's Rutgers, so anything's possible....

Reading that article, it appears that a decision will be made very soon.
That is way more believable than the stuff that came out earlier.
btw, I still think he's staying, so no need to jump all over it.....

And I still haven't heard anything, including everything he said last night, that indicates 100% that he's staying. Like the article says, they would have to blow him away to get him. I don't think it's over yet. I say 1% chance he leaves.

Re: Here We Go Again...
Consider the source on the stuff coming out of NJ. The people who would be connected to Hurley are strongly implying nothing is in the works. Dan couldn't have hinted any stronger that he will be here next year. The people who are saying Hurley is in talks with Rutgers are connected to Rutgers. I'm not saying the URI-connected people are infallible and the NJ people are dummies - it isn't impossible that our people will end up being wrong and their people will end up being right. But it seems pretty clear that the narrative that Hurley could end up in Rutgers is being driven solely by Rutgers people, so take that for what it is worth.

Re: Here We Go Again...
They are probably going back and forth. Dan knows what he wants, and it seems like if Rutgers gives it to him, he's gone.
That's my take on this.
Will they do it? Like Billyboy, I think he stays, there's too many questions surrounding that job.
I would put the odds at higher than 1% of him going, though.
TP, NOBODY on our side is talking, true. That could mean everything, or nothing.

I would probably agree with all of that but just making up that he interviewed seems a little bit of a stretch. Is it possible that he is just leveraging that for more money/resources at URI? I guess. That's got to be getting old for Thorr, right?TruePoint wrote:Consider the source on the stuff coming out of NJ. Re: Here We Go Again...
There are a lot of scenarios I could imagine here - that Rutgers thinks they have a shot and don't realize they do not; that Rutgers knows that they are out but Dan is not commenting until they have someone locked up so he doesn't destroy their leverage (as I said last night, I think this is a possible explanation for why he didn't comment last night - he gains nothing by taking himself out publicly, even if he wants to stay being connected to the job is good publicity); that Hurley is telling people around here he isn't going anywhere but is actually in serious talks with Rutgers. Maybe some other scenarios I'm not thinking of. But I continue to believe that the least likely thing is that Dan ends up in Rutgers, just my hunch.rambone 78 wrote:They are probably going back and forth. I don't understand how you would say "if they give him what he wants he's gone" and "I think he stays, there are too many questions with that job." Aren't those two thoughts mutually exclusive?
I think people on our side are saying a lot, if you know what you're listening for.

Agree 100%. If you want to go about your day and wait until you see it on espn.com, that's fine, too. But, twitter is the best news source these days. You just have to be smart enough to separate the wheat from the chaff. Not always easy these days but no different than deciding which newspaper did it better 100 years ago when some cities had 14 different daily papers.rodfromcranston wrote:For those giggling about things on Twitter,

Agreed.
As I've said, you can only go to the well so many times.
I hope Thorr and Dooley don't extend Dan like
Muskrat and Petro did with CFL.
They've done it twice. They should not be expected
to jump and react to every rumor or attempt at leverage.

Re: Here We Go Again...
I had this conversation privately with someone here yesterday. I don't know how many times you can keep going to that well, either. The best way to increase the budget around here is to get to the NCAA tournament, and maybe win a game or two. You get the shares, the donations, the ticket sales, the sponsorship revenue - it all comes with a successful product. I believe that Dan understands that reality and is willing to bet on himself to get those things here. I've also heard the most recent capital campaign did well. So we'll see.Gonebarongone wrote:I would probably agree with all of that but just making up that he interviewed seems a little bit of a stretch. My guess is that if there is anything to be leveraged from URI this time around, it is further facility upgrades and program sweeteners, not necessarily more years or salary dollars for the HC.rodfromcranston wrote:Agreed.

Re: Here We Go Again...
Then it could be more up to URI than what Rutgers is offering.
If URI won't budge, that could be the difference maker.
Could be whatever Dan is asking for, might be too much in light of the fact there's no guarantee that he'll get us over the hump.
This is all just speculation of course, but it makes sense.
The leverage game. Dan has played it well so far.......however if it's up to URI, and they don't cave, I can't blame them.
And TP, I agree on that too. Improved/enhanced facilities, not money that is.
URI however might feel that the program is in a good enough place by now, and can move on without missing a beat.
I'm sure they want to keep Dan. That's a no brainer. But at what cost?

Re: Here We Go Again...
One thing you have to understand about Hurley's relationship with the athletic department and the administration is that it is much more cooperative than it is adversarial. I don't think when Dan goes back to them and says "I can get this, this and this on the market. I want to be here, but to make it make sense for me, this is the kind of program we need to have here and this is how we can get closer to that" that he is trying to break the university and make them submit to his demands. The school wants to get him those things to the extent they can, and they understand that they will have (and probably already have) their head coach at below his market value.rambone 78 wrote:Then it could be more up to URI than what Rutgers is offering.

I just don't think you can say there is zero chance he's leaving. That's why I said 1%, because I don't think he's leaving either. But there's always at least a minute possibility, in my opinion.
