Re: Here We Go Again...
I made reference to this in an earlier post, but some of the comments underneath the local NJ articles are pretty scathing. Some of the fans have voiced their displeasure with Dan's potential hiring by resorting to name-calling ("psychopath", "head case", "hot-headed jackass"), while others are a bit more diplomatic in their responses by saying that his anger management issues and poor sideline behavior are cause for concern. There appear to be more Rutgers fans that DON'T want him hired than fans that do.
Finish what you started at URI, Dan. At least you know WE all want you here!!

Re: Here We Go Again...
And there's no way Dan could expect us to sell out the RC either, with a season like we just had.
He knows our history by now.
Hello Iggy. Welcome back. Also agree about an interim, no way. Why?
Heard anything? He he.....
NJ, all that will change when he starts winning there, if he goes.
Plus, he's started to change that behavior, although it takes a while to shed that reputation.....

Not a fan of Koch.
I've had go arounds with him on Twitter.
He's more of a house man-SID extension than
a reporter.
Disano has far more objectivity, if you're looking
for a comparison.
Koch is always taking his digs at the attendance
at the RC.
Sorry, but beat PC, win some games we're not supposed
to, go to a couple of NCAAs and if
the attendance is still lousy, then bitch and moan.
Iggy, you mean John Chuckran, who banned the
Ramettes as being "too slutty"?
He and Eddy Eddy were clueless and both from Penn State.
NJ, the perception elsewhere about Dan seems pretty
much what you just posted.
He is not well regarded, to say the least.
If he wasn't our guy, I'd probably feel the same.

Re: Here We Go Again...
I think the answer to this one is obvious. EC was his first big recruit. EC came to URI and put his trust in Hurley. There was no other reason for him to come. The two are very close. I have no idea if he'll leave but leaving EC and Hassan will be a factor.First, I don't think he leaves, but...to do the job requires a pretty good sized ego and lots of confidence. And, if you have enough of that, you might think you can succeed anywhere. My argument isn't against him leaving at some point. It's against him leaving those four guys before at least one of two life goals happens. When they graduate or get to the NCAA I have no problem at all with Dan moving on, though I wouldn't want him to. If he left now, I would be disappointed, but I'd still give him a standing ovation if and when he came back to URI. It's a pretty mild disappointment, not some blood feud. Plus we don't know that his family wants him to leave. Even if his parents and wife wanted to leave, I'm sure his kids wouldn't like to change schools at this point of their life.Nature of the job says, if you leave this one for another one...you will be 'leaving' someone....
If you were in the same spot, and your wife, father, and everyone else in your family wanted you to take, say $12M-ish and all that goes with it...what would you do?
I'd like to think that if I had $6 million coming to me that I would be able to turn down $12 million from a poor career opportunity to fulfill promises I made to people there for me when things were bad and give myself a better opportunity then the one on the table from the $12 million company.
My point was, it's always going to be 'some' guys....and as much as I also like these 4 guys...not sure why 'these' 4 guys would deserve any more special 'stay until they reach life goals' treatment than if your son was a player there three years from now and the coach decided to leave. I get it would be disappointing and it's not a blood feud, but unless the coach stays forever...someone is always going to be 'left' with an unfulfilled promise...it's unavoidable.
I agree that we have no idea if his family wants him to leave or not...but, IF my wife wanted me to go...that would be a huge factor. One can assume - but we also don't know - his kids don't want to move and change schools, but.... If my dad said to me, 'I'm taking on a new gig at double the salary, we're moving back to Grandpa's neck of the woods, plus I'm buying you a BMW to replace that Dodge..' thinking that wouldn't be the worst thing ever...

Rod, Chuckran and Eddy set the athletic dept, back years.
I mean, Chuckran was the AD, and it seemed like he didn't want to be.
Eddy was an academic who had no use for athletics.
Only at URI. Their "legacy" still lingers today, along with some others.

Iggy, it's those two [EC and Hassan] who will be far more affected than the others on the team.
I do think they both will understand if and why he leaves, but it won't be easy, especially on EC.

URI was 5th in the conference in attendance; higher than four teams above them in the standings. I'll worry if they're fifth in attendance when winning the league but not until then.

These four guys deserve more in my eyes because they came here and committed to Dan at a terrible time in our program's history. I believe that people that are there for you when times are tough deserve more.NYGFan_Section208 wrote:My point was, it's always going to be 'some' guys....and as much as I also like these 4 guys...not sure why 'these' 4 guys would deserve any more special 'stay until they reach life goals' treatment than if your son was a player there three years from now and the coach decided to leave. Love this from the piece below
Rutgers is a Graveyard for Coaches
No coach since before 1973 was ever a D-I Coach after Rutgers
Tom Young - never a head coach again
Craig Littlepage - nope
Bob Wenzel - never
Kevin Bannon - guess again
Gary Waters - rumor is he never watched basketball again
Fred Hill - nada
Mike Rice - are you kidding?
Eddie Jordan - giving it up for Lent
Editor's note - we could only go back to 1973 before carpal tunnel set in.

Players know that coaches can move on. It's part of life. If they're close to their coach, it's a lot easier when it's a promotion, rather than a firing.

Re: Here We Go Again...
ATP, we know that Rutgers has been a coaching graveyard.
Bad choices, little commitment.
Is that going to change there? Are they finally serious about upgrading their program to compete in the B10?
I know I was surprised when they were chosen to join that conference.
Anyway, DH will not sniff that job if it's just about the money.
It was the same thing when he was hired here. URI made promises and has mostly kept them.
Rutgers will have to make those promises too. They have the money, do they have the right people in power to do so the right way for a change?
I think that's what Dan has to decide.

I get the whole Jersey thing, but Rutgers is one of the worst P5 basketball schools that exist. I would be embarrassed to root for them, relative to the rest of the B10, that includes football. Seton Hall is a different story.

Re: Here We Go Again...
Hurley closeness to EC won't prevent him from taking a $12 million job if he really wants it. Players come and go.
My hunch is Hurley stays. But URI can't compete with that cash if money is the deciding factor. I think some of us are myopic about URI's role in college hoops. No dancing for 17 years means you don't rate.
And I don't think 100 percent of URI fans want Hurley around. A few told me this weekend that they would shed no tears. But it would be a big disappointment, especially after this season.

Why would we name the court for someone who

Re: Here We Go Again...
Gary Waters is an outstanding basketball coach. He put Kent State basketball on the map...and actually had some success at Rutgers, which as we all know is not an easy thing to do. They fired him and nobody has come close to the mild successes that Waters had (He had a winning record at Rutgers). And Rod is correct...Waters has taken a doormat Cleveland State program and taken it to post-season play numerous times and made it a legitimate program in the Horizon League. (He lost his best player this year to Wichita State as a grad transfer.)Blue Man wrote:Hahahha hilarious - but to be honest the point being that if you're going from a job in the Big East at the time...down to Cleveland state, that is kind of a career killer.rodfromcranston wrote:BAR, Waters has been at Cleveland State for 10 years.
