Austin Cilley - Westerly High School '13
The last I heard we were looking for a shooting guard. I hope that URI at least takes a look at this Westerly High School senior. the fact that he is only 5 foot 7 inches make his accomplishment all the more outstanding. He is now the sole owner of the all time leading scorer in Westerly HS history. I have not watch this Gentleman play but he can sure shoot the ball. He must be a hard worker judging by his results. DH please take a look!

Re: Andrew Cilley WHS 2013
I've been following his lines in the high school box scores....truly phenomenal...first name might be Austin however.
Another very good shooter is a kid named Beckford at Providence Mt. Pleasant High....

I actually prefer that Hurley continues to recruit the way he has been as opposed to using local RI box scores to find players. Please DH, don't take recruiting advice from a message board!

Congrats to Cilley for breaking a 60 year old record!
I doubt we're on the lookout for a 5'7" shooting guard, though.

Re: Austin Cilley - Westerly High School '13
As a Westerly native, I'd love to see a local kid get a chance at URI. But as good a shooter as he is, he'd be a significant defensive liability at 5-7. I haven't seen him play in person, but I have a hunch he'd do well to look at a good D-II program, such as RIC.

I can still shoot about 40% from 3. Why isn't anybody recruiting me?

Re: Austin Cilley - Westerly High School '13
I am a basketball fan.....I read the high school boxscores daily because I enjoy it......when you see kids like Cilley and Beckford hitting 7,8,9,10 three-pointers in a game it is noticeable....I too think we will see them playing at CCRI or RIC.....I would love to see a RI kid play for Rhody again....
.....the three point line is high school is roughly the same distance away from the basket...and there have been special kids who are under 6'1"....I think back to Shannon Bowman in high school....all of 6'3" and one of the toughest rebounders and low post scorers I ever say play....and he was playing kids 6,7, and 8 inches taller......I saw him make Rasheed Wallace cry at an all-star game...
....they are few and far between however.....Nate Robinson would never stand a chance I guess....

So, who will this 5'7" kid be guarding on defense?

At this point, especially in ri if you want any shot to be taken seriously as a d1 player you need to go to prep school to prove yourself against better competition.

Re: Austin Cilley - Westerly High School '13
I've seen Cilley play three or four times, since they're rivals with Chariho. Decent shooter, but in no way is he a Division 1 talent, especially at URI. Maybe he could be a bench / scoring guy at a low D1, but D2 or D3 is his more likely level to me.

5'7"? Are you kidding me?
D2 player all day.
Would be totally overmatched at this level.

No. No, no, no, no, no, no and no. You want to take a late run at a 13th player on the roster from this year's class? Maybe Travis Jorgenson from New Hampton (N.H.). You could still get two guards from St. Thomas More (Duane Notice and Marquis Moore) who are much better players and will contribute at a D-1 school. Cilley is nowhere close to this level on scholarship.

HAHAHAHA Saying Austin Cilly could play at URI is laughable. The kid is an excellent shooter, but he isn't going to touch a D1 offer. Trust me.

Re: Austin Cilley - Westerly High School '13
Can any kid who is 5'7" ever merit a scholarship at URI, or any other Division 1 school?
In my opinion it would take a player with special abilities....I understand that....I have never seen him play....I noted he filled up a boxscore, that is all....
....people who have seen him play seem to believe he is not that special player who can overcome being 5'7".....

Re: Austin Cilley - Westerly High School '13
Mugsey Bouges was obviously probably worth a scholarship, as were guys like Tyus Edney. But to be THAT short and succeed at the D-1 level, you have to be lightning quick normally. URI had Tyrese Sullivan a couple years ago, who wasn't especially quick, and it showed in all aspects of his game - He was too slow to get separation from all of the bigger players he went up against, so he didn't shoot well and even when open it was easy for guys to close out on him, and he wasn't a lockdown defender as a result.

Are we seriously comparing this kid to Mugsy Bogues and Nate Robinson? I'm sure he is a very good athlete for RISL, but let us please be serious and drop this conversation.

If enough people wanted to chat RIHS basketball, it might be fun to have a thread in the Vanity Corner, but in the past I remember it not being an especially popular subject.

No one's comparing anything. Someone asked if a 5'7" player could succeed in D1 and it spun off into a mostly unrelated discussion.TruePoint wrote:Are we seriously comparing this kid to Mugsy Bogues and Nate Robinson? We are obviously not recruiting this kid. I don't think we need this to be in "Recruitment Corner".

Re: Austin Cilley - Westerly High School '13
D-III schools cast their net pretty wide nowadays. If he wants to play basketball, as opposed to going somewhere for academics (I have no idea how good a student he is), he probably can. There was a marginal kid from Chariho a few years ago who may have only been second or third team All-Division, and he got looks from low-level colleges.theblueram wrote:Saw him play last night
