Here We Go Again...
No way Dan is leaving with everyone coming back but the yearly ritual has begun again.
Rutgers? What a mess?

I'm just going to ignore this stuff this year, unless he actually interviews for a job. And if he wants to go to Rutgers, God bless him for wanting to get involved with that mess. I don't think he would, but if he did we would take all the money we've set aside for him and go get someone else that is capable of taking what will be a very good roster to the tournament.

Of all the jobs Hurley could potentially take this upcoming season, Rutgers scares me the least. What a shit show.

Would rather have a coach that draws active interest than a coach no one wants. Funny part is...if anyone looking for a coach were to read the 'experts' on this board....who the bleep would want him???

Hurls could maybe make "New Jersey" stand up and watch...but the conference extends just a little beyond New Jersey and they're just not going to succeed in it anytime soon. If he goes there...he may never be heard from again...

Leaving to go anywhere could not be more of a non-issue. There's a better chance I start at center next year for the Rams.

Let's not rule it out ace - do you have eligibility remaining? Grad transfer possibility? Are you taller than 6'8"?

Do you think Preston would be in play? Re: Here We Go Again...
I don't know if he would be in play for URI anytime soon (hypothetically speaking - I don't believe we will be looking for a coach in the near future), but he was at the head of the bench for Creighton last night (not sure exactly what the pecking order is on their staff). He is inching closer and closer to being ready for his chance somewhere. For his sake, I hope when the time comes he is selective about where he wants to start.rjsuperfly66 wrote:Do you think Preston would be in play? Re: Here We Go Again...
Rutgers makes Boston College look like a powerhouse.
Rutgers has lost all of their conference games, 15 of the 17 by double digits. 9 of the 17 are by 22 or more. They have 5 conference losses by 30 or more points including one loss by 50.
An absolute laughingstock.

Enjoy the free publicity. Relax and look forward to next year with Coach Hurley at the helm.
Dan is done with losing. Done with rebuilds. Whenever he leaves, we will be ever grateful for his time here and the great memories he gave us.

Re: Here We Go Again...
With how hard losing seems to be for Dan, I can't see him leaving here to go to a total rebuild that will take years to turn around. The last four years at URI have taken a toll on him and I don't think he wants to soon repeat it.

Re: Here We Go Again...
I still think he's on a good trajectory here...and that he gets better than just a "pass" this year, given all of the injuries - the way this team has changed up the last couple weeks, has to be considered a credit to him and his staff....and...there are still at least a couple more left that could be significant....RF1 wrote:With how hard losing seems to be for Dan, I can't see him leaving here to go to a total rebuild that will take years to turn around. He owes a lot to EC coming here when he did. There is no way he is leaving him. This is a summer where I think we can actually be comfortable as far as that goes. Just pray for no big player defections per usual and hope maybe we can get Hare back because he was so good...typical summer activities.

Re: Here We Go Again...
Speaking of Preston, I'd like to see him get a D-1 head
coaching job, and soon.
He's made no bones about wanting to come back to
Kingston someday as head coach.
He is driven and nobody works harder.
So, if he gets a lower D-1 job, has some success,
whenever Dan moves up,
Preston would have a case for coming here.
Time will tell.

Re: Here We Go Again...
I agree completely with this. I'm not sure how he's doing at Creighton - it's almost impossible to evaluate assistant coach performance from the outside - but he's been at the job long enough now that it wouldn't surprise me if he starts getting interviews for some low-D1 jobs.rodfromcranston wrote:Speaking of Preston, I'd like to see him get a D-1 head

Yea! Aren't connections everything? Al Skinner had a hard enough time getting a job himself. That may hurt Preston on some level.

Hurley would put in all the good words for Murphy. I hope he gets a chance. Preston still has time, but some assistants can unfairly get trapped into being just defined as a recruiter and never get the opportunity to move up.

Totally agree, I'd like to see Preston get a lower D-1 job soon to. I'd rather he have that experience before any potential talk of coming back to URI down the road.rodfromcranston wrote:Speaking of Preston, I'd like to see him get a D-1 head

Re: Here We Go Again...
Preston is well thought of in coaching circles.
At Creighton, he's helped recruit two top
50 players this year.
He does need to think about stepping up
to a head coaching job, even if it's D-2,
to get the experience of being the front guy,
and all that entails.
He's still in his 30's, so he's got time.

Skinner though was north of 60 and had to deal with the Bob Ryan hatchet job that was done on him.

I wasnt very clear. I meant like Skinner wont have much clout in referring Murphy to a job.
Maybe Fairfield? Cooley could help?
Wagner? Dan?

Re: Here We Go Again...
I didn't read those two stupid pieces of work until just now. Rutgers fans have what they deserve. Dan Hurley will never ever take another rebuilding job.
He was 62-62 at Rhode Island going into the Fordham game. Now he's got a NCAA team teed up for next season (again) and short of being the most unlucky coach (and program) in the world, it's happening.
Oh yeah, Dan's going to tell EC "Thanks Elbert for trusting me when the ground was still glowing green after the last coach nuked the program, but I just couldn't wait for my next massive rebuild!! WINNING CAN WAIT!! B1G All Day!!"

Not only that, why would he turn them down three years ago but go there now? I think he realizes that if he can get the job done, which he is set up to do, that he can get much better offers then Rutgers.

RR2, I think you just hit the nail on the head with that.
Dan is trying to create a VCU-like program here. It's going to take at least a couple years of NCAA tourney invites to even approach that level.
He'll be here for a while.

Weird to me that this thread has a mini explosion every year.
A 17-14 Dan potentially joining 7-24 Rutgers must be the worst coach hire storyline this season.

Tim Cluess just took Iona to its 3 NCAA Tournament in the last 5 years. He will be a much hotter name than Hurley this offseason.
Cluess at BC would be intriguing.
As for Rutgers, BC is an infinitely more desirable job. Hurley is going nowhere this year and certainly not Rutgers.

Re: Here We Go Again...
BC is 1000x times more desirable than Rutgers, for sure. They have made the NCAAs probably a dozen times since Rutgers last. Hell, they have made it multiple times since joining the ACC. And they just announced $200MM in sports facilities upgrades. I have no idea if Christian can do it. We all know what it's like to turn around an oil tanker. But, it's the best league going. New England is a great recruiting territory. And it only takes a few kids (like EC and Hass) to buy into what you are selling. When you have 8 or 9 freshmen and your best three get hurt, it's going to be a rough year. It's certainly not a top 30-35 job but there are several power conference gigs that are tougher.STC wrote:Tim Cluess just took Iona to its 3 NCAA Tournament in the last 5 years. Well, it looks like they are making the money commitment. URI could only dream of those numbers.
Now they have to get the right people in place from the AD on down.
That's the hard part. If what they have now aren't the answer, no amount of money will turn that ship around soon, as GBG said.

STC, no one will be calling for Dan after this season.
He's here for at least 2 more years, and maybe more if we don't meet expectations.
Dan knows he has to produce.
This season maybe we were overhyped going in. Next season, no excuses.
