2016-17 Schedule Discussion
Not sure if this will just get buried or if this is worthy of being pinned to the top as a reference, but between standard rivalry matchups, the press release announcing our non-conference schedule for the upcoming season and some well informed rumors, we already have the beginnings of our 2016-17 schedule.

According to my source, yes. I'm not sure where the news of that game originally came from, so I can't track it that far back.

It is. URI and Duke are 2 of the 4 teams in the top bracket.
I'm not sure if us and them were to play each other in the first round, but some think so.

Re: 2016-17 Schedule Discussion
This year it looks like the HoF tip-off tournament has eight teams; Naismith bracket teams get two home games each, then play each other at Mohegan. Springfield Bracket teams play road games against Naismith Bracket teams, then play each other at Mohegan. There are two games at Mohegan (elimination game and a championship/consolation game), so all teams get four games. Here are this year's teams:
Naismith Bracket
Florida
Old Dominion
Purdue
St. Joe's
Springfield Bracket
Buffalo
Niagara
NC A&T
Vermont
Based on us playing Duke, I assume we are a host team in the Naismith Bracket. So we get four games, two at home and two at Mohegan - apparently Duke then the championship or consolation game, presumably against Cincinnati or another good program. Seems like a great thing for Rhody, provided we can draw some fans to the two non-season ticket package home games, which will be easier if we have a good year this year. I've updated the OP to reflect this info.

It is the same set up that URI took part in the first time it played in HOF tournament. URI got two home games against lesser names (Norfolk State and Loyola-MD) and then two games at Mohegan vs Ohio State and Seton Hall.

Re: 2016-17 Schedule Discussion
Are you sure they'd be non-season ticket package games? Looking at teams this season, it looks like they are being included in season ticket packages, and I thought when we played in this tournament before they were included. Plus we're including our games in the Cancun Challenge this season in the season ticket package. The Preseason NIT wasn't included in the season ticket package, but that was because if we had pulled off a miracle against Arizona we would have played at MSG. This tournament, with defined matchups allows the schools to include the games.TruePoint wrote:This year it looks like the HoF tip-off tournament has eight teams; Naismith bracket teams get two home games each, then play each other at Mohegan. Re: 2016-17 Schedule Discussion
Rhody has for the most part had difficulty getting home and homes versus Power-5 conference teams. It seems that series versus teams from leagues just outside the Power-5 such as the AAC, MWC, Big East, CUSA, and MAC are more reasonable prospects. One such team that URI has a lot of history with that I would like to see a series against is Temple. Other than UConn, the Owls for the most part no longer play teams in the New England/NY region and might be open doing so.

Re: 2016-17 Schedule Discussion
That accounts for nine games. This would mean that just four games remain to be scheduled. Given we have a year to do so coupled with the upward trajectory of the program, finalizing a schedule for next season should be a much easier prospect (than recent years).RhowdyRam02 wrote:Not sure if this will just get buried or if this is worthy of being pinned to the top as a reference, but between standard rivalry matchups, the press release announcing our non-conference schedule for the upcoming season and some well informed rumors, we already have the beginnings of our 2016-17 schedule.

Re: 2016-17 Schedule Discussion
As a plus, the base for next season's OOC schedule is already very strong, so it should help us in the RPI game next season. Combining what will ultimately be a strong schedule with the returning talent, it doesn't appear that we will be in a position where we are struggling to fill out the remainder of the schedule. Having us on the schedule will likely be seen as a benefit to whoever we try to schedule a game with.RF1 wrote:That accounts for nine games. It doesn't work out in NY down the line. He regrets leaving Kingston because he could have built something special.

When Mike Laprey was on the coaches show they talked about pretty much having the OOC schedule finished up and needing to schedule one more i believe. They also said teams were calling them, which had not really happened in the past. I think next years schedule will suprise some people. Great news!

Re: 2016-17 Schedule Discussion
They will need at least one high profile game for the Ryan Center in 2016-17 to drive advance ticket package sales. We had PC this season and Nebraska the year before. ODU, Brown, and the two HOF games vs no name teams will not drive attendance.
If this year's schedule is a blueprint (13 OOC games = 8 home/3 road/2 neutral) for the future, all four of the games left to be scheduled would be at home. Three would be buy games and one would be a front end of a H&H series.

So I was looking at the non-conference tourney brackets, and I saw Brown was in the other bracket. Could we possibly use them as a non-conference tourney buy game, and open up another spot? Would be very efficient use of the schedule.

Hall of Fame Tip Off Tournament Field
Naismith Bracket (Hosts) (announced on ESPN broadcast, noted by Ray Curren on Twitter in the arena)
Cincinnati Bearcats (American)
Duke Blue Devils (ACC)
Penn State Nittany Lions (Big Ten)
Rhode Island Rams (A 10)
Springfield Bracket (Visitors)
Albany Great Danes (AE)
Brown Bears (Ivy)
Grand Canyon Antelopes (WAC)
Marist Red Foxes (MAAC)
I would imagine that we get Albany and Marist as there would be minimal travel. Albany is usually decent as they are currently 22-7 and #83 in the RPI. Albany along with two of the higher profile teams at Mohegan would mean 3 out 4 games would be good opponents. SOS is important if the team ends up in NCAA contention (no given nor even an expectation). Our SOS ended up being much weaker than hoped for this season which might have hurt had Rhody been in the hunt for an NCAA at large. URI's OC strength of schedule is currently #138. Teams such as ODU, TCU, Nebraska, and Ion underperformed. Teams such as Holy Cross, Rider, Brown, Cleveleand, and American really cratered the SOS with RPI's of 250 or worse.

Re: 2016-17 Schedule Discussion
In all likely hood we will play Duke in the first round because we are in the A-10, as Penn State and Cinci are in better conferences and the tournament people will want championship to feature two high major conference teams.
Better to have the Duke game guaranteed in my opinion.
Getting Brown scheduled as part of this tourney and subbing some better team in place of them for a home game would be a perfect scenario! If we can't do that, then I'd want us to play Albany and Grand Canyon. Grand Canyon is 24-4 this year!
