The Early Line URI vs SLU
The opening line was URI - 13 1/2 but it is now URI - 12 to 12 1/2 which seems like a large spread
with Martin still listed as out and Iverson listed as questionable. just get the win guys to start A 10
play and we will go from there.

Re: The Early Line URIvs SLU
I will never bet against us,but this line seems too high for the current circumstances,
The reality is that, going into this game, we are 3 wins and 8 losses if we were betting us with the line.
The money seems to think that we are better than we have performed-- interesting!

Except for Iona, we've blown out bad teams at home so far this season. Of course, we had Martin and a healthy Iverson. With our defense versus the St. Louis' offense, I expect they'll have trouble scoring.

The line is down to URI - 11 1/2 but Martin is now listed as doubtful instead of definitely out.
That would be a nice surprisem if KI and Hassan would play wouldn't it? Though it is much more
likely that KI plays and Hassan doesn't.

Sit Hassan until he is fully healthy. No reason to put his health in jeopardy to play a bad team.

None of us knows how healthy Hass is. If he goes...he goes...and that means he's healthy enough. Would be great to see him out there.

I thought the line was way too high, even given how bad St. Louis is because we were so banged up, but as always, shit, Vegas has a knack for this stuff.

Re: The Early Line URI vs SLU
DH got the memo. URI started the game by taking good outside shots as soon as they appeared. The percentage of possessions where URI took good shots was very high. The result was fewer turnovers, more made baskets, fewer futile FT attempts by the bricklayers (HM who didn't play, KI who played half the game and EW) and a blow-out win,
JG dribbling around with less than 15 seconds on the shot clock is maddening. He needs to learn to be a PG who is an opportunistic scorer rather than a combo. Let JT do the driving and short jump shot taker. If 4M wasn't so valuable as shooter, I think he would be a better PG than JG. But, considering this is his last year and JG is a sophomore, I agree with DH's decision to keep things as they are. JG would have thrived under Bobby's tutelage.
Opponents will adjust to the style of play URI played today but when they do and HM returns, URI will have offensive versatility as a counter measure which will benefit KI as well.
I like CT's aggressiveness, but he has to know when to be aggressive. NA looks better every game and showed today how much of a contributor he can be when allowed to take open shots.
SLU is not a good team, but URI played a very clean, entertaining game with a lot of movement on offense and blew them out. Let's hope DH encourages this style in the future.

Have we been watching the same two players? I like McGlynn, but he's not the PG that Jarvis is.

Its pretty awesome watching CT develop. Not too long ago he was scared to touch the ball, let alone drive to the basket or take a 3. Its pretty obvious that hes going to be a really good player in the future.

Agree...my memory isn't what it used to be, but this seemed like one JG's best games in a while. And...while 4 can be a valuable asset, I just don't think he's a PG...rodfromcranston wrote:This board has had some insane comments this week.

The spread is set by the betting money. Started off differently than the 11.5 it ended up with.SGreenwell wrote:I thought the line was way too high, even given how bad St. Louis is because we were so banged up, but as always, shit, Vegas has a knack for this stuff.
All vegas wants is equal money on both sides of the number and they adjust the number accordingly in order to accomplish the even spread.

but the initial line is set by Vegas and then adjusted (normally not a whole lot) by the money. Most of the time Vegas is very accurate as these guys are paid big bucks to predict the spread

Agree, the initial line is set by computer (Vegas uses computers not some wizard type guy in a hat). It's not like Vegas itself is so smart - the computers are that crank the data input.twisted3829 wrote:but the initial line is set by Vegas and then adjusted (normally not a whole lot) by the money. The spread started at 13.5 and dropped to 11.5 by game day. The spread adjusts by the money bet.

Vegas does not always want the money to be 50/50. On occasion they take a position and bet against the public.

This is a pretty common misconception and comes up a lot. Vegas takes positions on games all the time. Sure they move the line based on money coming in, but they very often take large positions on games. Especially in the NFL.ramster wrote: All vegas wants is equal money on both sides of the number and they adjust the number accordingly in order to accomplish the even spread.

I know people who work in Vegas and at casinos.adam914 wrote:This is a pretty common misconception and comes up a lot. Vegas takes positions on games all the time. How do you know this to be the case? And who exactly I vegas? Do you mean one casino? Group of casinos? Are these individuals you guys are referring to?
I'll ask some of my contacts there what they know about this adjusting of the spreads for personal gain. This is the only place I have ever heard of this.

Re: The Early Line URI vs SLU
When I say "Vegas" I mean the sportsbooks in general. A lot of them are run by the same companies (inside and outside of Vegas). William Hill and Cantor Gaming being a couple of the biggest. For example Cantor runs the sportsbooks at Venetian, Palazzo, Cosmo, Palms, Tropicana and Hard Rock. William Hill is a London based company that runs 20+ sportsbooks and kiosks just in Vegas alone.
So it is most certainly not an individual or even a single casino. And its not about "adjusting the spreads for personal gain". I think its actually more about NOT adjusting the spread just to get even money on each side. These companies are smart, the public is dumb. If they feel confident about their number and the public is coming in heavy on one side, they aren't necessarily going to move the number just to get action on the other side, because more often then not the public is going to be very wrong.

Right. And, it always comes down to the guy in the tin foil hat....that's why the public will never win. Tin Foil Hat Guy is invincible (in the long run anyway).adam914 wrote:When I say "Vegas" I mean the sportsbooks in general. A lot of them are run by the same companies (inside and outside of Vegas).
