Re: Dan Hurley Coach's Show TONIGHT 6pm @ Mews Tavern
I noticed that everyone keeps their headset mics too far away from their mouths, especially the guests who join mid-show. So the sound engineer's solution is to raise the general levels and that just pulls in more noise.
That's always been a pet peeve of mine -- not being able to clearly hear the players who are often soft spoken and have deep voices. Get the mic in front of their mouth to pick up their voices, please, Stevie Mac!!

Was very impressed with Four. Smart kid, well spoken. I think the leaders in the locker room have probably already been established but I do think our guys would do well to emulate Four in the way carries himself and the way he works on his craft and how seriously he takes it.

Food at the Red Parrot sucks, but hopefully the room will be big enough. Last year's coaches show was at Brick Alley Pub and the room was too crowded.

Once we finally reach the promised land, aka the NCAA tournament, most of the current venues will not hold the crowds we'll get.

That would be a nice problem to have. If the crowds start to swell because of the team's success, there are plenty of more "banquet hall" facilities available in the winter, in South County and elsewhere in the state. Not much call for the wedding bookings from November to April that they normally get in the summer.rambone 78 wrote:Once we finally reach the promised land, aka the NCAA tournament, most of the current venues will not hold the crowds we'll get.

Yeah, like at a lot of the golf courses.
We do a lot at Quidnesset already. I could see that as a regular venue.....unless they completely close up shop during the winter.

I don't think it makes any sense to broadcast a radio show from a banquet facility. It would be very weird to have a bunch of people standing or seated around a banquet hall watching three guys talk into microphones. The whole point is having it at a bar - it is about the atmosphere, not the number of people that can watch. If the bar is full, just listen to it on the radio. It is, after all, a radio show.

True! But if the team does get as popular as we'd all like, you also don't want to limit revenue opportunities, or conversely, to create a hazardous situation for a sponsor. (i.e. At a certain point, too many people at an event is as bad as too few.) I was actually thinking of places like the Towers (winter rate - $500 to $600) or Kinney Bungalow, which could also help the university and athletics build partnerships. The university is also now leasing a dock from Narragansett at Middlebridge, and that could be a nifty little place to have a yearly event, although I realize they have the Bay Campus out there anyway.TruePoint wrote:I don't think it makes any sense to broadcast a radio show from a banquet facility. Too bad we don't have a new modern sports bar, part of an on/near campus banquet type facility, run by hospitality folks......maybe part of the soon to come hotel......Maybe campus is in the middle of nowhere......I will keep dreaming.....

Re: Dan Hurley Coach's Show - TONIGHT 6pm Red Parrot, Newpor
Cucina Twist and the Pumphouse have flipped several times in the past 10 years, since I was finishing my undergrad stuff. While neither one was really a sports bar type of place, it's seemingly a tough area to have a restaurant. If you're going off-campus, most people would rather just drive the extra five minutes to hit up the Mews, it seems like.NYGFan_Section208 wrote:Or even an 'old' 'antiquated' sports bar on/near campus...section(105) wrote:Too bad we don't have a new modern sports bar, part of an on/near campus banquet type facility, run by hospitality folks......maybe part of the soon to come hotel......Maybe campus is in the middle of nowhere......I will keep dreaming.....

Yeah, but while Cucina Twist was not a bad restaurant it was also not a great bar. Certainly not a "sports" bar.
Anyways, that restaurant went down because of what happened between Marra and Pinelli. It was a failing of the partnership, not of that particular restaurant or its location.

I think the on campus lodging was being discussed as rather smallish, maybe a conference room or two; no bar, no restaurant, no banquet hall type venue. Just an on campus transient housing....Always thought an on campus hotel, college bar atmosphere, restaurant for faculty/guests, family visits, large enough hall for events, alum gatherings, etc, etc, would be an economic winner......I guess that's why my career was public sector!!!

The closest thing to campus distance-wise is Homestead on Route 2. I also noticed a sign on Rt 1 South right by the Holiday Inn. That place 300 North (food is not great and is part of the hotel) is trying to advertise "Game Day Specials".section(105) wrote:Too bad we don't have a new modern sports bar, part of an on/near campus banquet type facility, run by hospitality folks......maybe part of the soon to come hotel......Maybe campus is in the middle of nowhere......I will keep dreaming.....
I cannot wait to see something go into where Cucina Twist is (whose food was also terrible).

What are some of the larger rooms in the memorial union used for these days? Since the drinking age was 18 when I was there, there was The Pub, The Rams Den and the even larger room upstairs. What was the name of that room? I just remember it was large enough for a Young Adults concert with several hundred students in it. Having one of the shows on campus might get more student interest.

It is a pretty cool idea. I guess maybe there would be an issue with sponsors maybe? Isn't the sponsor a beer company? It's ALL about sponsors -- getting fans to visit a place that perhaps they've never gone, or haven't visited in a while. Plus having it around the state provides fans from all corners with better access to Coach Hurley.

Supposedly he picked coming to URI for football in large part because Fleming would allow him to walk on to the basketball team in the off-season. Steve and Don liked his shot form.ace wrote:Billyboy78 wrote:Who's the guy in between Jared and Earl? Is that a new walk on?

Completely agree. Last year's show at Pj's in Johnston had the place completely packed. They were supposed to do one at the end of the year at Wright's, but the snow messed things up.steviep123 wrote:I'd love to see one in the northern part of the state.
In my opinion this is just a part of a larger problem with the university as a whole. Despite being the flagship state university they seem content to act like a directional school only focused on the southern part of the state. I understand that most events are going to be clustered around campus, but the scarcity of programs north of Providence in a state this size is inexcusable. I understand most times I have to come to URI, but sometimes it would be nice if they came to me so to speak, and I have to wonder how much the lack of outreach in the northern part of the state hurts funding.
