Maybe the worst foul call in the history of basketball on Iverson there. Thought it actually should have been a swim move called on Hernandez.

What a disaster missing two FTs then leave their best player for a wide open three. Tough swing.

Wow. I HATE losing, but I am absolutely not mad right now. I think this team showed incredible guts this morning. Giant marbles for this group. I'd love to have this game in my back pocket, but I am more encouraged than I was before the game tipped that we are going to be OK.

He was screaming for them to foul on the sidelines. There was only a 3 second time differential. Valpo could have shot it with a second left on the shot clock and by the time Rhody rebounds it theres only a couple seconds left to launch a prayerNJ03 wrote:got a feeling that was a miscommunication. Or they miss and the ball gets knocked around and the horn goes off before you get your hands on it again. 100% have to foul in that situation, and probably up until their is about an 8 second differential.Surfri72 wrote:Why? unless they hit a three if they score we are down three with enough time to go and hit a three

Re: Game 2: Valparaiso (Tuesday, Nov 17 10am)
I said it Friday. The key to the rest of the season is going to be Iverson. I thought today he took a bunch of bad shots forcing things but I think in the long run he will be fine. First gams since the injury and a game they should have won against a very good opponent. Need to tread water right now until Dan has some time to get practicing with new roles. Iverson reminded me of Lamar in his first few games.

I guess that makes sense. tough loss to swallow. not upset with the team at all. they played hard and battled til the buzzer. I'm still upset at the 'situation' in general. seeing EC on the sidelines in crutches and being interviewed mid game made me sick to my stomach. I guess i'll get used to it, just not easy to see now.

TP, I want nothing more than the Rams to be a great team. I hope you're right.
I need someone with more basketball IQ than I have to explain how we're going to compete on par with last season with no threat off the dribble? I despise eternal pessimists, I'm not trying to be pessimistic, I'm asking an honest question?

Re: Game 2: Valparaiso (Tuesday, Nov 17 10am)
They need to just run Four off screens all day Dana Barros style. He is by far their best player and should have had way more shots. Even his misses are in.
Three quarters of the high school teams in this state would have a better free throw percentage out there. Not going to win many close games if that's going to repeat all year.

Re: Game 2: Valparaiso (Tuesday, Nov 17 10am)
The best feeling I have after that is that we barely lost to a team who's going to win close to or more than 30 games. We have enough talent to beat most teams we're going to play, it just may be hard for us because we won't be able to pull away against many of them.
Four looks like the only guy who has any offensive IQ.

Caught the end on my lunch break.
If we don't shoot FT's better we will lose most close games to good teams.
Simple as that.
Hope the new guys shoot them better next season. Most of the guys we have now don't have a clue, sorry to say.
Thought they would work on them this summer. Obviously not......

I think you have 2 players who can create off the dribble in JG and JT. JT needs to realize he is built like a moose and should stop trying to avoid contact at the rim, but absorb it and finish the bunnies.Keatgsr07 wrote:TP, I want nothing more than the Rams to be a great team. I think maybe you remove Hassan from the high post and place him down low more. He showed some good moves on the block today. Play Earl more and set more screens for Four.
Hitting your free throws always makes your offense look better.

Re: Game 2: Valparaiso (Tuesday, Nov 17 10am)
That is our game if we hit fucking free throws - how is possible that we are that bad. And it's not jus the "bigs" on the team. Awful. I do think this will sort itself out quickly and thank god we have Four on the roster this year. Hopefully DH takes note and sees how important outside shooting is in college basketball and can cover up a lot of mistakes. We should have at least one guy like four on the roster every year, because almost every team we face does.

Re: Game 2: Valparaiso (Tuesday, Nov 17 10am)
Couple quick thoughts from s 213 today.....
-4 needs 10 shots a game including 7 three point attempts. We are running set plays for him which is good. Walker might be the best defender he goes against all season. Clearly Hurley sees him as the new toy and intends to use it. I believe he is going to have a couple of 30 point games.
-Iverson is feeling jitters and is a bit slow to attack. He looks over his shoulder at the bench all the time. Turn him loose and he will be an absolute beast, a matchup nightmare.
-In response to above - Iverson and Terrell are both strong attackers off the dribble as is Garrett.
-Fernandez, Walker and Peters are as strong a trifecta of talent as we will see all year. Drew can coach too. Paid attention to dad I guess! Team has sweet 16 again written all over it.
-Supreme effort for 40 minutes by all.
Play this game again we win by 10......on to Cleveland State.

Re: Game 2: Valparaiso (Tuesday, Nov 17 10am)
Jarvis and Terrell just HAVE to get better at FT's.
Hassan is at 33% for the season so far. Earl not much better.
This is what we have.
This team could still be a threat to Dance, but....
70% FT's today wins the game.....
What a shame. With EC, we win this game even with the putrid foul shooting......

Re: Game 2: Valparaiso (Tuesday, Nov 17 10am)
We may not score a lot more points than last year, but we should be able to grind teams down in a very similar fashion. You still have an excellent nucleus in Hass, Jared and Jarvis who are all a year better, and you're throwing into it some guys who aren't as talented as EC but who do certain things really well.Keatgsr07 wrote:TP, I want nothing more than the Rams to be a great team. Beyond the obvious facts that all loses are tough, I think anyone really down on this team for losing this game (1) doesn't appreciate how good Valpo is and (2) doesn't get how much adjustment there will be to playing without EC from a basketball standpoint, never mind the emotional hangover involved.

Re: Game 2: Valparaiso (Tuesday, Nov 17 10am)
Looking at this team objectively, they show me the exact same problems they had last season. They cannot shoot a jump shot, except McGlynn.
They can't shoot free throws, except McGlynn. They throw a lot of sloppy passes. They play fantastic defense and their defensive intensity is
remarkable. They give a full effort on defense. On offense they are able to get plenty of makeable shots, but they can't make them. Unless they
improve their shooting it is going to be a long season. This game resembled the Nebraska game from last season except they weren't able to pull
it out. If the shooting and free throw shooting don't improve immediately, the Rams will be fortunate to go 19-12. I was encouraged by the
defensive effort, but that encouragement was completely offset by the incredibly bad shooting and I'm afraid it may continue all season.

I view this game almost as an exhibition game. You can throw out any analysis of the result or player performances. This was a weird game time-wise, and the whole team was on an emotional roller coaster for the past 4 days. I think the Cleveland St and TCU games will be much better indicators of where/who we are.

Valpo killed Iona. And Iona is actually very talented so maybe a little encouraging first game without EC. Free throws still unreal
