Sounds like an excellent pick up. Every mention of him indicates he was underrated. Had offers from some good schools.

He won't take 3's with Dan coaching him....unless of course he shows he can make them.....pretty sure he'll be playing within 15 ft. of the hoop most times, if not all the time....

Re: '16 LA PF Mike Layssard Jr. (URI Verbal)
If he has range they will let him use it. Wouldn't make sense not to. He says they want to use him (at least partially) as a stretch four and in the pick and roll/pop game due to his shooting and ball handling skills. I haven't seen him play, so I don't know. AS long as he can bang and rebound on defense.

Re: '16 LA PF Mike Layssard Jr. (URI Verbal)
I love everything about this kid. I think he's going to do HUGE things in the A10. There aren't a lot of guys in this conference that have a front court presence like him. He'll create a lot of matchup issues, even as a freshman. Weight wise, we might have the biggest front court URI has ever had next year.
What I like most though, is where we are as a program with regards to players we can get. This sentence: "The schools I was seriously considering other than URI were SMU, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Memphis."
AGAIN. We are going up head to head against big name, big conference schools, and getting our guy. 3 years in a row with recruiting. What a damn fine job Hurley and co are doing. I know Mike made the connection with ARD, even though there were doubters in the beginning, it's quite clear these are the expectations that come from the top.
Another great day to be a ram.

Sampson is going to LSU.

One thing Hurley learned was that in the A10 you not only need height, you need bulk. URI wasn't being out jumped in the paint but pushed around.

I don't know that you necessarily need the bulk in the A10 - but if you have that bulk, you're going to find yourself near the top. It's still a guard dominated league, but those who have bulk up front will have a significant advantage.Iggy1979 wrote:One thing Hurley learned was that in the A10 you not only need height, you need bulk. Remember the LaSalle game last year, where Hassan got pushed around? He got no help, Biruta was a finesse player, and Watson didn't play much.....
There may be a couple of games where that happens again this season, but it looks like starting in 2016 that will no longer be the case....

My point exactly. We won both those games against La Salle. We don't need wins with style points. Just wins.rambone 78 wrote:Remember the LaSalle game last year, where Hassan got pushed around? He got no help, Biruta was a finesse player, and Watson didn't play much.....

In the A10 a wide big is a luxury, not a need. Unlike the B1G or old Big East. Having one or two of them in this conference gives you a significant advantage, but you can win without them. See: Wildcats, Davidson.
Getting Big Mike allows us to be a problem in so many ways on the floor.

The St. Louis game [which we won] on Feb. 14, was the game that stands out in my mind, where Hassan took a terrible physical beating.
Yarborough 6-6 230,and Agbeko 6-7 240, would have been arrested for assault if their activity was on the street.
Terrell carried us in the second half.

Not a ton in that video. BUT there is so much there. His touch. His moves are natural and fluid. He timed the ball well off the rim and showed the desire and bounce to put it down.
Other thing with kids is you have to provide for the fact they get better every day. Progress for teenage athletes is day to day, week to week.
I think he's a stud. If they add Langevine! Whoa!

Re: '16 LA PF Mike Layssard Jr. (URI Verbal)
Yes, Blueman, but see what happened to skinny Davisdon when they got to the dance.
Crushed.
Winning the A-10 is nice, but not the real goal.
Our Elite 8 and Sweet 16 teams didn't win the A-10.
They were built for the NCAAs, because they had great guard, but
solid, and in Kenny Green's case, great inside players.
You don't beat Syracuse, Missouri, and Kansas, and play Duke
to a standstill with only guard play.
You need balance if you want to think big.
Go big or go home.

I agree rod, you need guys like the Mike towers to win the NCAAs. Years of watching this team suck has lowered my goals considerably. Obviously this isn't our old rams. That said...I still want to see us win the a10 before the ncaa.

Re: '16 LA PF Mike Layssard Jr. (URI Verbal)
I think it's fact not opinion. Even as recently as 2 years ago, people looked at the UCONN teams with Kemba and Shabazz and said "See it's a guards game." Think those people are missing the point, and also that UCONN did have some good players in their frontcourt those years.rodfromcranston wrote:Yes, Blueman, but see what happened to skinny Davisdon when they got to the dance.

Even last year if you looked at the Elite 8 teams, many of them had at least 1 potential NBA caliber big playing prominent roles for them. Some of them 2 or 3. Okafor, Kaminsky, Dekker, Lyles, Cauley-Stein, Sabonis, Tarczewski, Johnson, Auguste, etc.
I think we all agree that many of those guys are strong players, and it's up to the schools who can't get the Okafors or Cauley-Steins to develop guys like Kaminsky and Auguste to be able to compete with them.

Re: '16 LA PF Mike Layssard Jr. (URI Verbal)
From ESPN-
Strengths:
Michael is a big bodied low post player. He can score some on the low block and has solid hands and a nice touch in the paint. He scores mostly on putbacks and dump offs in the lane but can face and hit 12 to 15 footers. He can be effective clogging the lane defensively with his width and girth.
Weaknesses:
Michael is not a great athlete but he does know how to use his size to his advantage.
Bottom Line:
He can be effective at the next level because of his ability to take up space in the middle defensively, score some on offense and rebound his position.

It’s not often you see a junior in high school down to 267 pounds, but that’s the case for 2016 power forward Mike Layssard (Northwood HS, Lena), who at 6-foot-8 has trimmed his frame 30 pounds from this time a season ago.
http://www.scout.com/college/lsu/story/ ... e-layssardBlessed with quick feet for a player his size, the thinner Layssard recorded a standing vertical of 24 inches and a max vertical of 30 inches.

I think of the newbies Layssard is the most ready to contribute next season.
For various reasons Tertsea and Langevine probably get spot minutes most of the year, but Layssard could earn a lot of minutes if he can guard the 5. Offensively he is by far the most advanced.

As PC and Bentil were bullying their way to the basket on Sat, the thought crossed my mind that Meezy could probably help stop these big guys like Bentil, Jarelle Wright, that Euro TCU guy, even Vashil. Even if hes not exactly Mutombo on D, he could be very useful when big HM guys try to bully us down low.

Re: '16 LA PF Mike Layssard Jr. (URI Signed NLI)
Big game for Mike and Northwood Lena (8-1) today against Leesville in Tioga Tournament.
Leesville is Northwood's only loss this year in the Rapides Tournament. Lost 68-64 and Mike had 32 points!
Mike and Northwood Lena will be fired up for this one.
Can't wait to see Mike in RHODY Blue next year.
Saw him close up at the URI - PC game. For sure he is a legit 6'8" (at least) and strongly/solidly built. Looks in great condition. We got a good one here, a steal.
Consider Mike made 1st team last year as only a Junior with Sampson who went to ST John's but then changed mind to go to LSU.

It was a very good idea to get Layssard in to see that game against PC. He's probably the most polished (although far from finished) of the recruits, with Langevine and then Tertsea at the other end.

Layssard's tip in of a missed 3 point attempt at the buzzer forces OT enabling Northwood Lena to beat Leesville in double OT. Mike finished with 26.
