Re: Wrestling-legend Dusty Rhodes Dies
I was more of a WWF fan growing up then WCW, so I missed most of his major work and am more familiar with his sons, Golddust and Cody Rhodes. Passing away at 69 makes him ancient by wrestler standards.

Re: Wrestling-legend Dusty Rhodes Dies
iI never got "The American Dream"
He certainly wasn't in the mode of the top guys.
People liked him, though, and he became a legend.
RIP Dusty Rhodes.

Re: Wrestling-legend Dusty Rhodes Dies
I saw Rod was the last post and clicked on this thread expecting fully that Rod had a story where he either beat Rhodes in a wrestling match or witnessed something interesting up close.
I'm dissapointed slightly! But tall tales are solely for Ramsey and his brother slywilliamscaddy. Also ppes4life or I forget the other PeeCee Smithillonians.

Re: Wrestling-legend Dusty Rhodes Dies
Never saw Dusty in person. Did see Bruno Sammartino,
Chief Jay Strongbow, and Lou Albano at RI Auditorium.
Saw Macho Man, and Jake The Snake, and Andre The Giant, at the PCC.
All before wrestling became the bore it is now.

I remember seeing pro wrestling at Keaney my sophomore year (1971-72) but I can't remember who wrestled. I remember there being a "champion" .... but that word was loosely used in wrestling at the time.

Still is. WWE currently has a slew of belts - WWE championship, intercontinental, U.S., tag team, divas, along with NXT (their minor league) belts for championship, tag team and divas. As of two or three years ago, they even had an additional "main" and tag team championship, because they ran Smackdown and Raw as separate shows.Rhody74 wrote:I remember seeing pro wrestling at Keaney my sophomore year (1971-72) but I can't remember who wrestled. OMG, Steve. How can you know that much detail about pro wrestling?

Ditto. It used to be the male soap opera to many
co-workers, over the years.
Now, it's fallen to a very much younger bunch,
because of the poor script writing and crappy characters
who populate WWE these days.

What do you mean "script writing"?
Isn't it real?

74, I probably went to that same show you did.
Andre the Giant "wrestled" in that one. Back then, chair throwing was all the rage.
Man, was he big. In his hands, a basketball looked like a softball.

Re: Wrestling-legend Dusty Rhodes Dies
Well, it got worse in the mid-2000s, when Linda decided she wanted to run for political office. That's when the tone-down really began, can't imagine them going back now. McMahon won't even refer to them as "wrestlers." Growing up, I used to love the WWF as background noise, or something different to watch on a Monday night. Now, I just throw on Netflix. I try to follow some of the things I found entertaining when I was younger (Royal Rumbles/Wrestlemania), but there are no wrestlers I'm compelled to. We had a luxury suite at the Dunk for work maybe 3 years ago, I knew maybe 2 of them.rodfromcranston wrote:Ditto. It used to be the male soap opera to many

All WWE TV is is an ongoing advertisement for their next pay per view.

Pedro Morales once tried to hit on my then fiance after a show at Rhodes. In retrospect, she should have left with him. Would have saved me a lot of money.
I,'ve always wondered why the TV championship matches was never free on TV.

I'm not really a wrestling guy, but I did see that Rowdy Roddy Piper died today, who I remember from liking wrestling as a kid.

Re: Wrestling-legend Dusty Rhodes Dies
I haven't watched wrestling in years. Every time I hear about it, it's about a wrestler from my childhood dying. I went the PCC to see Kamala, the Ugandan Giant wrestle. I forget against whom. He's in tough shape these days.

Also, I went to the Worcester Centrum to watch WWF. They were filming for Saturday morning shows. So it was about a 3 hour wrestling event so that they could "package" a whole bunch of shows. We ended up seeing Canada's Greatest Athlete "Iron" Mike Sharpe wrestle and lose 3 times in one night. You can read where Iron Mike was OCD...

Ohh, the memories of Saturday mornings. WWF on channel 56 at 10am. Different WWF event on channel 6 at 11am with World Class Championship Wrestling on Channel 25 also at 11am. (The Von Erich's, Ice Man King Parsons, etc.). That's a solid 2 hours of wrestling.
(Then lunch...then a crappy independent college football game on Channel 5, usually BC vs. Army, Temple vs. Rutgers, etc.)

Hulk Hogan wants to be Trump's VP. The final piece is now in place.
