Maybe the white whale, a big man coach? Or Ty Boswell or a guy like him (I tend to agree with those that say Ty is potentially a better asset where he is)?adam914 wrote:Very interesting, good for him. Excited to see who we bring in as a replacement.

Not the most fan friendly guy.
Doesn't seem like a big loss, based on results.
I see this as an opportunity to diversify the staff.

Re: Luke Murray To Xavier
This above post is part of what drives me crazy about the "big man coach" discussion. The idea that you need to be above 6'5" in order to teach post play is absurd. I think its ridiculous to assume that none of our current coaches know enough about basketball to teach our front court players how to function and improve.
If ARD is the best man for the job (IF he's at a place in his career where he wants to come back to URI), then great - hire him. I think it is very likely that someone else is hired.

Re: Luke Murray To Xavier
Hassan hasn't improved? He was one of the most lost-looking players on defense I'd ever seen the first semester of his freshman year. Iffy hasn't improved much, but how much of that is on the coaching staff? Gil was a somewhat of a "disappointment" given his hype coming in, but his defense was light years better in his second year. Watson, we'll see. Who else is there?
I think going out and hiring the next assistant with the top qualification being "big man coach" is a mistake. The job of an assistant coach involves a helluva lot more than improving the skills of a certain subgroup of athletes and should not be the foremost consideration when making this hire.

Hassan Martin has a great motor and superb athletic skills,
which he came here with.
Mistaking adjustment to college ball for coaching is absurd.
As for ARD, he has recruiting connections to the rich Atlanta area,
where we never recruit from. He also has Florida connections.
Let's not dismiss someone because he's our guy. Do some research.

Re: Luke Murray To Xavier
You need a diverse staff that complements each other and the head guy. Hopefully, you have two guys who are recruiting beasts that aren't lost when it comes to Xs and Os. And then one guy who can really win you a game with game plan and execution. Personally, I'd love for DH to bring in a master offensive guru. An Al Skinner type (I said type for all you flex haters). I think the inability to generate an easy bucket or two against good teams down the stretch is the one thing that could be the fatal flaw from taking a big leap. Teams are hip to the high ball screen at the end of games. Too easy to defend. Maybe that comes from installing a great offense. Maybe it's getting a Pete Newell type (only 6'2" by the way and probably the best big man coach of all time) so we can get easy post points in a pinch. I don't know. I am not unhappy with this. Frankly, I am sort of surprised Mack wanted him. Just need to make the right hire.

Re: Luke Murray To Xavier
Yep, those attributes can't be taught but they damn sure need to be harnessed and directed appropriately, to say nothing of learning how to play defense as a part of a team concept. To deny our coaching staff credit in making that happen is unfair and incorrect.rodfromcranston wrote:Hassan Martin has a great motor and superb athletic skills,

And let's not just hire someone because he's our guy. We're in a really good spot to make a great hire here. If ARD is the best fit, awesome, but let's not close the job posting just yet.Let's not dismiss someone because he's our guy. Do some research.

Re: Luke Murray To Xavier
We need to get a big man before someone can coach him, Our #1 need right now is a recruiter to bring in the talent. This is where Ty Boswell would fit in. He was a main person in us getting Terrell and Iversion. Has great connections in New England AAU and Prep schools and also well known nationally on the AAU circuit. Plus he is already involved with our team.Maybe we would have a better chance with his Expression players and other Northeast bigmen.

I think anyone who reads Keaney Blue can forget former players, unless they bring something-beyond-special to the new Hurley Regime.eli#10 wrote:As Jim Harrick said assistants recruit recruit and recruit. Who has the best qualifications that Coach Hurley knows/is comfortable with/can recruit, etc.,?????
I'm sure he has a list in his pocket, made the initial calls, and so on.
I don't think it's anyone we know on a personal-level.
At this point, I do think Coach Hurley knows that he needs a young Billy Hahn/Barry Rohrssen-type who can deliver big-time players.

Ray Pepin has been dead for over a decade.
The Boswell rumors have been around for about a year.
It was always in conjuction with Carr being given some sort of
administrative job at URI.
Murray leaving, opens the door to Boswell, without URI needing to
get creative to remove Carr.
Whatever. I've heard very mixed things on Boswell.

hearing that Danny has absolutely no interest in ARD. wants to pull somebody from his own coaching tree. a name to watch out for.....Wagner lead assistant and big man coach Mike Babul. he played for Umass and Calipari and graduated around 2000. has coached bigs at wagner since 4 or 5 yrs ago. Developed Kenneth Ortiz, Jon Williams and Nao Folahan.

Weren't they twins, who came in with a lot of hype and were nothing
special?
When did NJ become the Valhalla of basketball?
Did Red Aurebach come from there? John Wooden? Coach K?
Bobby Knight? Phil Jackson?
Sometimes, to grow, you need to go outside your comfort zone.

Re: Luke Murray To Xavier
No one would listen to a hall of fame URI player who went to the Elite 8 and dominated the A10 and grew up in Atlanta in less than perfect conditions anyway. Besides the fact that he loves the school for how it turned his life around and made him into a man. Who also was coached by Harrick, Skinner, Cooley and Coen. And coached under Cooley and Coen. That person couldn't sell URI... could he?

Well, I'm in the camp who thinks Dan needs to spread his wings and fly away from his "inner circle" so to speak.
How is this "inner circle" working out for him when it comes to recruiting lately?
I think Carr will be the next to go at some point.
Dan still has his dad at St. Anthony's. Besides that, it's time to look for proven results getters, wherever they might come from.
URI might have to increase the assistants' pot again to bring them in.....
Blue Man. Yep.
Now, we'll see if this hire brings results, as in 2016's at least....

Exactly. How about we get out of our comfort zone, and look outside of our Rhody bubble instead of always thinking one of our own is the best for the spot? When Murphy left, we got Cox who brought us a 6'8 recruit who was committed to a Big 10 School? Let Dan and Thorr do their thing!

Re: Luke Murray To Xavier
I enjoyed Luke's time at Rhody and I will miss him. Great guy, always was fun to talk to, and has a great knowledge of the game. He scouted, recruited, and he's had success everywhere he's been. He will be a successful Head Coach someday.
I was always impressed at how he could rattle off statistics like some kind of basketball Rain Man. He was always interested in fans' perspective on the team and never hesitated to provide his honest feedback on what was working and what wasn't with this team.
Appeared to be reserved but actually quite funny/personable. I witnessed some hilarious exchanges between him and Steve McDonald.
Always good to my son too, who is a very big Luke Murray fan and won't be happy to hear he is headed to Xavier.
I wish him all the best and thank him for his contributions here.

Boswell. Never met him, but from a basketball/recruiting standpoint, a good hire I think.
Now, bring a couple of bigs and a PG with you, and it will be a GREAT hire!
