Well, now we know why Bobby never signed his extension.
If I'm a Buffalo fan, I'd be pretty unhappy with him,
right now.

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
I think Bobby was pissed at Buffalo for leaking info about that extension, to try and throw off DePaul and others.
The coach and school have to have trust in each other. That trust may have been violated.
If so, can't blame him for leaving. He wasn't long for that job [Buffalo] anyway.

Remember Travis Ford staying at UMASS? After winter in Buffalo, Hurley probably got off the plane in Tempe and said,"Where do I sign."

Congrats to Bobby. I'm sure Buffalo fans feel a little burnt, but that's life in the MAC. Bobby is on the fast track, if he wins at ASU he will be on course for an elite job (maybe Duke?) and maybe the Hall of Fame.

Pac 12 versus MAC? 2 mil a year versus 500K?
No brainer, as Shaka said when he took the Texas job.
Heard that VCU offered him a million dollar raise to stay, to approx. 2.5 mil a year.
Wasn't enough.

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
Hope he's ready. Two years as a head coach to a PAC job.
I like Bobby, but he was lucky the Buffalo AD was a Duke guy
and gave him the shot at UB.
I wonder what happens to Nate Oates, EC's old coach, who was
an assistant under Bobby?

A Hurley coaching my two favorite college teams... It doesn't get better than this for me.
Welcome to the Valley of the Sun, Bobby!! From a fellow Jerseyite.
I always wanted URI to come out here to play ASU (like the hockey team would do) but I guess that won't happen any time soon now.
URI > ASU (just don't tell my sister). I wonder which coach brings more passion to their job at ASU now? Bobby or Todd? Hmmmmmm. Toss up, I think.
Oh, and bring me a slice of La Strada pizza when you come out. I miss 'real' pizza.

Yes its a PAC 12 job, but its the bottom of the barrell. If he gets them in the top half, he's already considered a success.

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
How is Arizona St. a "bottom of the barrel" Pac-12 team? They finished right in the middle this past season, with an NIT berth. Clearly not an elite program, but he's not reinventing the wheel. Obviously transfers/recruits will impact things, but he's taking on a .500 team in conference this past season. Also, look up "curtain of distraction". Their student fans are awesome. Beat Arizona at home this year as well. Has a solid foundation there already.
I think it's an awesome jump for him, by year 2 they'll be contending for a tournament berth.

Arizona, UCLA, Stanford, Cal, Washington, Oregon and USC are all well ahead of them.
they're on the level of Oregon State and Washington State in that regard

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
Interesting stuff about Nate Oats. I don't recall there being too many interim coaches being named at this point in the year, so I'm curious to see what Buffalo's interpretation of interim is at this point. My assumption is that by putting the interim tag on him now, he's going to get a chance to coach the team next season. However, I suppose it could also be that he is the interim coach while they conduct the standard job search, which would make it harder for Oats to land a new job for next year if he isn't named head coach.

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
DaninAZ can probably speak to some of this better, but Arizona State seems like a program that's had modest success but has underperformed. They're a Power 5 conference school, mid pack in the PAC 12, but with their location just outside of Phoenix it should be easier for them to attract talent then the University of Arizona, but they haven't done that. They've reached the second round in 2003 and 2009 and made another tournament in 2014, so there's some success that Hurley can build off of, but probably not unrealistic expectations to try and meet either. Jerry Colangelo, the Chairman of the Board for USA Basketball, was supposedly very involved with this hiring. The combination of the head of USA Basketball being behind the search, USA Basketball being headquartered near Arizona State, and Coach K being the head coach for USA Basketball should help Hurley get pumped into the talent pool that comes through the program. Also, I read there was talk of a new practice facility right next to ASU's campus that would be shared between ASU and USA basketball. Finally, for everyone thinking Hurley was in line for the Duke position, with so many potential people jockeying for that job when Coach K finally does retire, I think it was absolutely necessary for Hurley to start getting experience in a Power 5 conference to have a shot. All in all, I really like this opportunity for Hurley.

agree with most of what is said here, but not sure why u think Phoenix is a recruiting advantage over Tuscon and the U of A. To many, Tuscon's hills, less traffic and less smog is very favorable to Phoenix.RhowdyRam02 wrote:DaninAZ can probably speak to some of this better, but Arizona State seems like a program that's had modest success but has underperformed. Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
the only thing you need to know is this...
ASU = URI
UofA = Providence.
Fans from both Providence and UofA think they are the superior program to their instate rival. Providence because the belonged to the BE in the 80s and UofA because they have had better coaches & success. Oh, and a banner. With Bobby they will no longer have the higher profile coach in Arizona leading their program. At least when it comes to the peripheral/casual fan.

Agreed.
That was my point as well above. Providence has league affiliation to throw around, Arizona has had a higher level of success to back up their elitist attitude.

Goes to show the significance of competent leadership. Thorr handled our situation with Dan about 100% the opposite of how Danny White handled Bobby's in Buffalo.

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
He obviously misread Bobby's loyalty to him and/or the school.
He did give Bobby a chance most would not have.
The article makes it seem as though White was offering $1,000
over what he was making, but in fact he would have gotten a 301K raise.
Nowhere near what Depaul of ASU were offering, but substantial in
the real world, and more than Bobby made in his time as an assistant coach,
combined.
I'm sure there's two sides of the story, as usual.

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
Got a "Bobby Hurley is a turd" story today...
So the media gets to vote for conference coach of they year. In the MAC this year, it was pretty much a run away slam dunk with Keno Davis taking Central Michigan to the top of the league. Well Bobby found out that his radio guy voted for Keno and not Bobby as MAC Coach of the Year. So Bobby decided to snub his own radio guy from doing pre-game interviews with him, no off the record access, banned him from travel with the team, etc. This was Bobby's way to "stick it" to his own radio guy for not voting for him, apparently. Word on the street in Buffalo is that Bobby's act won't be terribly missed by the UB community.
Never heard a coach pulling that nonsense before...

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
This doesn't sound accurate. How was Bobby able to institute all of these vindictive measures in the wake of the post season award voting? By it's very nature, post season awards happen at the end of the regular season, yet you seem to be describing long term issues. And how are you plugged into the Buffalo network enough to have the inside dirt on this?PlayMikeMotenMore wrote:Got a "Bobby Hurley is a turd" story today...

Wonder what Ryan thinks of his mighty BC now ? Thought that was a total hack job by him to do that to a guy like Skinner who may not be the most ambitious guy but always ran a clean program and did a great job overall at BC. I talked to Skinner a few times at various HS tournaments he was a very nice guy.
