It should be interesting to see what happens to the VCU roster. As we all know, the NCAA does not require a player to sit out a year when a Head Coach departs. All the Letters of Intent can also be ripped up.

Their top recruit Tevin Mack has already removed the term "vcu commit" from his twitter profile. UConn had really wanted him.Ashcat wrote:It should be interesting to see what happens to the VCU roster. You could also go back to the future with Jeff Capel as well.
Head Coach Will Wade of Tennessee-Chatanooga has been mentioned as a target. He went 40-25 in two seasons there and was previously an assistant to Smart at VCU for 4 years.

VCU is also heavily involved with Vermont Academy's Bruce Brown and Tyrique Jones. Shaka's departure might help us in our recruitment of them. They are both '16s though.

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
I'm not 100% sure how this works, but I think even if
someone within the conference de-commits, there is the
two year waiting rule.
It's why when Ladonte Henton de-committed from Dayton,
even though Preston had recruited him, we couldn't jump in on him.
So, Preston called his friend Ed Cooley, and the rest is history.

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
VCU made the tournament in 3 of the 6 years before Smart- they'll be fine. As mentioned before, they have everything in place to continue to be good- fans, money, university support plus a new designated practice facility that will be as good as anyone's in the country. Not every coach is a "rebuilder," and Shaka won't have to be one again in Texas. It's a great opportunity for him.
As for Chris Jans- yep, that'll get you fired.

Yeah, I forgot about in conference rules. But I still like our chances more now with the Vermont Academy kids, if they're looking to play in the A10. They both could be shooting higher.rodfromcranston wrote:I'm not 100% sure how this works, but I think even if

Funny, just after posting my last post, I read that Shaka called Bruce Brown last night and offered him for Texas. Not wasting any time.

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
At this point, I would take an early commitment from a 2016 big, if he's a so called can't miss prospect.
Maybe in the fall signing period?
Until we know who's leaving after this semester, no way to tell how many 'ships we'll have available for 2016....should be several anyway....

Do the two-year, in-conference decomitment/transfer rules still apply when a head coach departs a program?

OK, seniors next year (if everyone stays)
Watson, Minnis, Reischel, McGlynn,and Oneykaba.
No shortage of scholarships for 2016 recruiting.
Too many, in fact.
Henton de-committed when Gregory went to GTech.

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
Well, we know Watson, Minnis, and McGlynn will be here.
So, that leaves us with a minimum 3, and possibly 4, for 2016. I'm sticking with 2 leaving for now.
I still think it's Butler and Oneykaba that's going, and JR stays.
Lots of good bigs and PG's in the 2016 class.

The VCU/Shaka situation is a major one for the A10 Conference. CBS' Eye on College Sports Podcast this morning talks about it for about 20 minutes. Worth a listen:

As someone in marketing that was a great read, thanks for posting. Couldn't agree more with the observations of the writer -- the basketball program drove the brand of the entire university, and specifically HAVOC. When you watched VCU everything from the band, to the cheerleaders to the fan base to the product on the court was consistent. Its not a coincidence VCU is quickly becoming a leading institution in the study of brand marketing. Its Marketing 101, executed to a tee.

Ha I saw that. Pretty weird. There are three candidates according to everyone. One local media guy says one of the candidates will get the job, and a well-connected national guy says it will be one of the other two guys. Pretty clear they're talking to different sources.

They seem pretty sure its Wade on the VCU forum, subtle anti Shaka comments are being thrown around of course. Not that he was their most successful coach ever or anything. Anyway, hopefully Wade can keep it going for the other Rams.

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
Will Wade uses CHAOS instead of HAVOC. This is how he wants to play the game:
CHAOS: Offensive Goals
1) Lead the Southern Conference in Scoring
2) Top 20 Nationally in TO Margin
3) Top 40 Nationally in Offensive Rebound Pct.
4) Shoot 35% or better from 3pt Range
5) Average 67+ Possessions per Game
CHAOS: Defensive Goals
1) Top 3 in the Southern Conference in Scoring Defense
2) Top 20 Nationally in Steals
3) Top 20 Nationally in Turnovers Forced
4) 35 or more Deflections per Game
5) 8 or more Student-Athletes with Positive Scores on the Effort Chart Each Game

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
Interesting hire. He was on the Jalen Rose Report a few weeks ago and mentioned he would still love to coach, and he is a great speaker with a good background and story (rose up from a lightly recruited player to junior college to fringe NBA player to a starter on a championship team, IIRC). I don't think he was the greatest tactical coach in the NBA, but I could see where he would be a great college recruiter.jmck wrote:Avery Johnson named head coach at Alabama.

Disagree on ASU. Huge potential there....beautiful building and great geography. The right coaching staff will turn that thing into a monster IMHO.
I also think Smart will turn Texas into a beast and quick. Nothing against Barnes, like him but it was time for a change in Austin....and they got the hottest coach in the land to replace him.
I would take the Tempe job in a NY minute if I were BH!
