According to his tweets he's been suspended because he's late to school a lot and blew off detention. Can't imagine Hurley tolerating being late ....
"Every season, college basketball has one or two teams that rise from dormancy to relevancy, squads that make long-awaited charges at the NCAA Tournament and become really fun storylines along the way."
I just saw that, and I kind of love his friend who responded. As long as there are not lasting implications, high school is the time to be stupid. But, get it together. I can't imagine his current coach is too thrilled, either.
Named by Dave Telep as one of the Top Five '13 recruits in the Atlantic 10, along with Josh Brown, JeQuan Lewis, Isaiah Watkins, and Hassan Martin. 2/5 ain't bad!
Telep's view of him as a point doesn't seem to match with the coaching staff's at this point.
G E.C. Matthews
College: Rhode Island
Hometown/High school: Detroit/Romulus
The Rams earned this ESPN 100 commitment by besting teams from the Big 12 and Big Ten for his services. A tough and hard-nosed scoring threat, Matthews is best when he is removed from having to the run the team and free to cause havoc in the lane. He has a gift for contorting himself and finishing at the rim with strength and reliability. He'll play combo guard for coaches Dan and Bobby Hurley and hopes to eventually transition to the point.
WOW! Two of the top 5. We have never seen these types of recruiting rankings here at URI. Harrick was trying to get us there and I think if he had stayed we would have but this is a first year coach doing this. The future sure looks bright.
"If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you're going to have something special" - Jim Valvano
Telep doesn't realize that the reason he chose to come here was to play point.
We had a shot at Brown, when it came down to us and Temple.
Add Pollard, and we could have three of the top 10 A-10 recruits!
Harrick was a West Coast guy, who didn't have any connections on the East Coast. thus, Jerry D, Sonny Vaccaro and Addidas.
The class he was working on when he left included a top five, and two top 50s, in addition to Woodward, Bell, Marbury and Womack, who were all top 100s.
But, yes, for a first year coach, with limited NCAA coaching experience, this may be unprecedented.
Ed Cooley was at Fairfield for five years. That makes him a fairly well established head coach.
Hurley only had two years are Wagner. This will be only his third year as an NCAA D-1 head coach.
Last year was Cooley's sixth as a D-1 head coach.
Read what I said. A first year coach with LIMITED NCAA coaching experience. I'm sure you'll agree with that.

Who cares?

Gotta love the ratings game. Since he verballed URI, EC has gone from #37 to #89.
How did he drop 52 places without playing a single high school game?
What a load of crap!

Definitely agree with what Hurley said though about once you get beyond the top 5-10 in any class (one and done types) that there's really not that huge a difference between 15-150, it's all about coaching up their skills.
I see KY wrapped up 3 of the top 5 players. Just no way to compete with that. A coach with his own Lear Jet and palatial dorms for basketball players.
My point on EC is how, once a player commits to an A-10 school, he drops. If EC had declared for Michigan, he'd have risen in the ratings.
Agree on both points, especially the coaching aspect.
If Hurley thinks these kids can play, I trust what he'll do with them.
Who cares what the rankings are after we sign em, they'll learn soon enough what we've got here
(But it certainly holds true that it's Kingston vs. the world, every year it seems. I thought that'd go away with the Hurleys here, but I guess there's more convincing to be done).
If you say you’re a Rhody fan, I know you are my brother. For you have suffered as I have suffered.

Which ranking was this? I see in the initial post that he was ranked as the 37th pg in the country by ESPN. ESPN now has him as the 21st best shooting guard nationally and as the 86th best player overall. He's dropped on scout, but not by that much, and moved up 7 spots on Rivals.
As long as he signs an LOI in 3 weeks or so, I don't care where he's ranked. According to E.C. himself, he's becoming even more athletic as he says his bounce is now at another level...can't wait to see this kid play.
OK, let me try to explain this again.......
I don't really give a shit about the ratings. I'm showing what a crock they are, depending on where a kid decides to go.
It has nothing to do with EC or his obvious talents. It's the politics of BCS vs. everyone else.
Everyone clear on that?
ace wrote:Ok but I'm still interested in knowing what ranking had him going from 37 to 89, especially as others had him moving up.
I never saw EC ranked anywhere near as high as #37. He was ranked #37 acccording to Point Guards Only by Scout earlier inthe season but that was only among PGs - did not include SG, Forwards or Centers.
Rankings at this time are:
Scout #73
ESPN #86
Rivals #93
These were his rankings before he verballed with URI as well

Still would like to get some word that its a done deal. Coaches can comment as soon as they pull the letter from the fax machine if its the same rules as football.
