Re: REPORTS: Dan Hurley a Candidate for St. John's
I'm not worried that he's going to leave. The program will move on.
I'm just stating my opinion, no more, no less.
Maybe I should just fucking say "Oh he's staying!" Whoop-de-do!
I hope he stays too. Do any of you think I want him gone?
Get real.

Yup, no one with reliable sources have mentioned this. Still Mullin or Hurley and it seems Mullin is 50/50 at best right now.Billyboy78 wrote:I think he means Pitino Sr. They have talked about him on the St. John's board, thinking he'd love to come back to NYC for his last glory moment. A Preston/Skinner/ARD contingency plan sure would be fun and would soften the blow if Hurley does leave.
Don't want Hurely to the leave but get the band back together if he does.

STJKory, why would people there be backing a Mullin candidacy? I get that he was a legendary player there, but I can't find any history of him coaching at any level or working in a college environment. If he takes the job it might work out, but I don't see any evidence at this point to think he's qualified for the job. What am I missing?

Re: REPORTS: Dan Hurley a Candidate for St. John's
I'm not 100% on him also, but the staff he has been rumored with is going to be legit. He actually has been offered two NBA head coaching jobs (Warriors and Kings) that he turned down because they were midseason (he wanted a training camp) and he wanted to make sure he had a vet assistant coach group before he took it. So there's a lot of people who think his basketball knowledge would translate into coaching and he is a hard working person in anything he does.RhowdyRam02 wrote:STJKory, why would people there be backing a Mullin candidacy? Negatives are lack of coaching history (although he has built teams as a GM before) and lack of recruiting expertise. Many think that Slice would be brought in from Kentucky though, and having connections with NBA people might be interesting to recruits. I'd prefer Danny or Bobby but I'd back Mullin.

Sometimes less is better..... we get it .. you want him to stay, i think we all have this sentiment, the repeated doom and gloom posts are getting annoying.rambone 78 wrote: I'm just stating my opinion, no more, no less.

Re: REPORTS: Dan Hurley a Candidate for St. John's
If Dan leaves (I believe he is staying), why wouldn't URI look for a similar replacement to what Dan was 3 years ago?
It is a better job than it was three years ago - returning talent, higher pay, workout facility, charter flights. We should be able to attract better coaching candidates than 3 years ago.
If Dan has built this program, the candidates should be existing head coaches.

Ok I stand corrected on being out of the woods. Glad to be wrong. The Alford situation is why I hesitated to assume it was over, but sources seem not to consider that a possibility here. Good news.

Oh poor Darth Idiot. All his dreams crushed, Danny boy turns down a Jersey based P5 job and the almighty Big East and NYC to stay in Kingston. I heard Crow is best served raw. I wonder what his "sources" at the north providence stop n shop are saying now.

So, the report says this has been in the works since February. Makes sense with Rod's post a while back that the Hurley's are house searching in RI.

URI is likely the source for Koch's report (a guess). School may let Dan's side do the announcement eventually, but important to note they agreed in principal but not finalized yet (no reason to worry about that, just the reason no official announcement yet).Tom98 wrote:Any report from URI directly???

Re: REPORTS: Dan Hurley a Candidate for St. John's
To belabor the budget discussion, URI allocation of the $1.7 Billion State Higher Education Budget is $734 million which is recommend by the Governor as part of her Annual State Budget. This State Budget must be enacted by the Legislature to become effective. Within this budget is a specific line item for every Classified and Non-classified employee of the University. To simplify, Governor Raimondo has recommended an 11% contribution in support of our operating budget. The operating budget is of course totally apart from the Capital Budget which includes the bonded projects backed by the good faith and credit of the State, the components therein which may or may not require voter approval. The Study you cite Rod, was concluded under the Carothers administration as an abstract in 2008. Amazingly it uses a straight line extrapolation that is not coming to fruition as if it was to be believed we should now be at about 5%. I believe the contributions will continue near or at the current level based on the Legislatures' propensity for subsidizing in-state tuition at RIC, CCRI and URI.

This also has to be a big help for recruiting, having a coach who is being heavily pursued by a (supposedly) better conference. Some great publicity for both Dan and the school......as stressful as it was, it is now worth it.

Re: REPORTS: Dan Hurley a Candidate for St. John's
You can't paint that however you want. They can include URI's operating expenses in their budget however they want. Fact is, they contribute $50-60 mill a year. That's it. It would be better for the state to submit in their budget a line item for $60 million for higher ed than the entire URI budget. The state can go f themselves. I'm in favor of privatizing.Ashcat wrote:To belabor the budget discussion, URI allocation of the $1.7 Billion State Higher Education Budget is $734 million which is recommend by the Governor as part of her Annual State Budget.
