Predict Attendance for URI - IONA Game Tuesday Night
I predict 5488 even with Spring Break.
Team deserves a solid turnout, hopefully I end up way too low
Good team in Iona
NIT for the first time in what seems like forever
Home Game in NIT to boot
Go Rhody!!

Now that we hear that Iona has buses for students, I guess it would depend on how many of them come here.ramster wrote:I predict 5488 even with Spring Break.

So, 10 busses would be what? 500 people.
I predict 3,500. Hope I'm very low.

Won't be many students, otherwise I would think at least 5000.
Still could be, but some of them will be Iona fans.

That will suck. No excuse for that. There's enough students living in South County, where at least several hundred should show up.
Of course it's St. Patrick's Day. And drinking starts early and often.
Back then, I didn't need to drink green beer. By the end of the day, I was turning green.

I'm guessing even the URI students living in RI are probably in Florida or someplace warm partying their brains out.rambone 78 wrote:That will suck. No excuse for that. There's enough students living in South County, where at least several hundred should show up.

Gotta be careful of the driving drunks on the way back.
Daryl Jasper just mentioned that with the students on break,
he's still hoping for a decent student turnout, but it won't be easy.

It is St. Patricks Day!! Everyone is Irish; but especially Tom Ryan and the Hurleys.
This is our house, and if we can't draw for any postseason tourney, we do Not have a real fan base.
I don't believe that, and I would like to think that it is not possible that our fans from "all the way" from the other side of the state, will not drive 30-40 minutes.
If you were Dan Hurley and could not draw for a post season tournament game, what would you be thinking.
We will be way over 5,000

Maybe Dan should show up at the every student's house, offer them free green beer, a green "I LOVE HURLEY, BECAUSE SOMEONE'S IRISH" T-shirt, a free burger from the Shack, Pharmacy School coupon, and a chit for a free snack for the game.
350 students tops tonight……which is good, considering every Rhode Island student can afford to join their self-imposed exiled parents/guardians in Florida, whose homes sit on top of a potential sinkhole……

Re: Predict Attendance for URI - IONA Game Tuesday Night
The ticket office is being inundated with calls. They extended their hours to handle the load. The short two day window for ticket sales and changes to their system have them very busy.
I have heard that URI has bought and reserved 500 tickets for students. Another 500 have been purchased by others and reserved for students. The NIT controls all aspects of tickets (pricing) and URI cannot just make tickets available to students without buying them. No free tickets can be distributed so don't expect local civic groups and schools.
If you are planning on buying walk up box office tickets or doing Will Call-P/U, I would make certain you give yourself plenty of extra time as the ticket office will be very busy tonight just prior to the game.

That might help but most people are not showing up more than one hour prior to game time. Regardless of their hours, the big bulk of activity will be from 6-7pm. Hopefully they are fully staffed to handle the onslaught.rambone 78 wrote:They should probably open a little early, instead of the one hour before.

Very disappointed in the turnout. Alums and locals need to be out in far greater numbers.

The atmosphere was a bit strange tonight with no MC and no promotions. Not one t-shirt was thrown, shot out of a gun, or dropped via parachute. Actually heard the band a lot more during stoppages of play as there was nothing being done on the court.

Nobody cares about the NIT.
The numbers show it.
One good thing without all the bombast,
was being able to actually talk to people around me
about the game!

Students have an excuse being spring break.
Others do not.
3 seniors might have played their last game in the RC
Embarrassed by this attendance figure quite honestly in spite of what other schools got
I never would have guessed anything close to this low

Re: Predict Attendance for URI - IONA Game Tuesday Night
I thought the crowd was great last night. Probably 100 students and the rest were mostly season ticket holders. Typically for the NIT we would have a lot of season-ticket holders no-show but I think it's a estimated to how hard our guys play and the excitement in the future of this program.
The best part was the rousing BOOs as the refs entered for the 2nd half. TJ even mentioned it on the post game show. The slick haired guy is the worst ref in the country. I am still fighting to get my voice back from the GW game in Brooklyn Friday night that he did. Then they gave him the A10 Final game and he was brutal in that as well and I had no dog in the fight.

I got to the ticket window at 6:00. I asked if there was anything left in either 205 or 212? The girl said those sections were sold out. I ended up in 206. During the game, I looked over at section 212. There were 25-30 empty seats in the section? I checked again later on. Same 25-30 were empty. Supposedly they were sold. Where were these people?

whatever the actual number was, it showed very well on the broadcast. Was loud throughout. Big cheers for the dunks/blocks and VERY loud boos for the officials. To the point that old "friend" Timmy Welsh cracked a joke about RI fans and our love of heckling.

I thought it wasn't that bad of a crowd, until I
read the attendance figures. Pretty noisy, too.
I thought booing the Iona dance team was pretty tacky.
Talking to people last night, the idea of a quick turnaround
and little time to promote the game, didn't help.
The reason the NIT draws more people to lesser programs is simple.
The NIT means more to them than it does to the big programs.

Was watching at a bar and the Miami and Pitt games were both on too. Their attendance looked a lot worse than ours. You're right, bigger programs don't get as excited for first round NIT games and spring break doesnt help either.

The perfect scenario would be that Stanford comes here and plays on Sunday. The students would be back and the atmosphere could be Nebraska-like. Let's hope.

Stanford was on spring break too.
Would think if our game with them is on Saturday or later, a lot of the students will be back in time for it.
My guess is, if we have to travel, the game will be Sunday night.

You're right, Rod. Does that mean they are on break next week?
If so, another reason to play the game here. We should draw at least 5000+ for it.
Is the NIT aware of our motivation? After all, they like money.

I thought the crowd was pleasant to the Iona dancers for their second routine.....was disappointed in the smattering of boos for their first routine....I admired the diversity in both the cheerleaders and dancers for Iona......
....I never boo college athletes or cheerleaders/dancers......I only boo refs and decisions to foul when down by 12 with 15.7 seconds to go in the game.....

Agree with everyone that the fans there sounded loud and seemed more than the announced attendance; but I was really surprised and disappointed at the small announced crowd.
It seems that only the hard core care and the majority of Rhode Island fans and students have to be dragged along kicking and screaming that they have something better to do and enjoy the nightlife in Warwick or Cranston.
I am quite confident that if Dayton or St Louis or VCU was in our situation last night that would have drawn the same or more than their season average.
Shame on
Is it possible that the the pricing of the tickets effected the turnout? What was the pricing?
PS Bressler, thanks for reminding me that I need to buy sinkhole insurance( Yes, it is an extra down here.)

No students on campus and it was St Patty's Day. Fringe fans arent going to choose a game over a bar on March 17.
That plus the typical drop off for a mid week game

Ticket prices were half normal face value for the 200s and 100s, from what I understand.
We're not ready to be compared to VCU/Dayton in terms of fan support. They are way off the scale for the A10.
Short notice, St Patty's Day, Tuesday 7pm start, televised game and no students on campus is not a recipe for big crowds. We did well for the situation as it was.

Even had students been back there were only 1000 tickets for students then you had to pay. I forget how much student tickets were after the initial 1000 but that would cause less students than other games because some would just not want to pay. Also the fact the game was played less than 48 hours after it was announced didn't help either.Da_Process_Survivor wrote:Not even that complicated.McRam wrote:Agree with everyone that the fans there sounded loud and seemed more than the announced attendance; but I was really surprised and disappointed at the small announced crowd.
