Re: 2015 NIT
I am ok with an NIT bid THIS year. Next season, however, it won't be acceptable.
My guess is a first round home game with a #3 or #4 seed.

Re: 2015 NIT
The NIT Postseason Tournament, now run by the NCAA, is a 32 team field. All conference regular season champions that do not make the NCAA get an automatic invitation. The rest of the field is selected at large by a committee (which is supposed to pick on merit). All the teams are seeded into four regions. The first three rounds are at campus sites with the lower# seed getting a home game. If a team cannot host due to scheduling issues with its home venue, it may be forced to play a worse seed on the road. The semis and final are played at MSG in NYC.
As of 9:00am Sunday (3-15-15), it looks like there are twelve teams with auto bids to the NIT. There is one conference (Sun Belt) which could still have a champion lose in their tournament final which could further reduce the NIT at large field. The Sun Belt regular season champ was Georgia State and they would likely have gotten an at large NIT bid on their own with an RPI of about #61.
NIT AUTOMATIC BIDS TO DATE
BUCKNELL PATRIOT
CHARLESTON SO BIG SOUTH
CENTRAL MI MAC
IONA MAAC
LA TECH CUSA
MONTANA BIG SKY
MURRAY ST OVC
NC CENTRAL MEAC
S DAKOTA ST SUMMIT
SF-NY NEC
UC-DAVIS BIG WEST

Re: 2015 NIT
We're going to be a 3 seed. If we had won last night, and then lost today, we would have been a 2.
Doesn't really matter, though. If Hassan is limited due to injury, which it looks like, we're not going to win the tournament.
If he was 100%, there isn't a team in this year's NIT we can't beat.

If it is a 3 seed, the opponent would likely be one of the twelve auto bid teams listed above. Almost all of the auto bids will probably have the highest seed numbers (6,7,&8).
I don't know how excited Rhody fans would be for an NIT game versus the likes of NC Central, Charleston Southern, or St. Francis-NY. It would be akin to an early season OOC game at the Ryan Center.

Re: 2015 NIT
Templon has a 3-6 match-up with Iona. That could be fun- to say the least, they are teams with very different styles.

Re: 2015 NIT
Yeah, I was kind of hoping that we would see a Rhody/UConn or Rhody/Buffalo matchup down the line, but that's not happening.
Of course, I don't think Dan and Bobby would want to play each other. I think they've already talked about that.
Ace, yes that would be fun.

URI vs Iona would be a fun first round game and probably attract a decent crowd, certainly better than any of those other conf championship teams.

Re: 2015 NIT
I'm hoping for a home game...............A projection I saw us as a 4 seed [not official] in our region, of eight teams.....probably a home game. One team in the region [5 or higher seed] is Yale. That would make an interesting game between two evenly matched teams [on paper at least]
.....Another possibility with UConn loosing to SMU is that they may be in the NIT, and we could meet them in the first or second rounds.
a 5:55 p.m. guess

Re: 2015 NIT
I want us to play a name program and beat them.
One who is so disappointed at not getting to the NCAAs,
that they'll sleepwalk through their game,
like St. John's recently did or Kentucky losing to Robert Morris.
Any of those programs on that automatic bid list, are yawners, and will draw a crown like the
pre season NIT did last year, when we had a crowd of 800 for one of the games.

Agree with Rod. Any of those power conference teams would be great to play. Hopefully we can get better in this tournament. My disappointment is beginning to wear off now a bit. And I'm getting excited to see who we are gonna play. Let's win this damn tournament.
Screw Richmond! They're garbage! We scored 79 against them!

Re: 2015 NIT
Following that logic, we should not be that far behind them in NIT seeding. The Spiders were just nine spots ahead of URI (57 vs 66) in the RPI but Rhody had a far better record. beat them on their court, had a better league record, and went further in the conference tourney. I bet you however that the NCAA logic doesn't carry over to the NIT. Watch how UConn is seeded.ace wrote:Richmond will have a 1 seed. Sure, ok.

Right, thats exactly it, the NCAA logic determines their seed, but not the rest of the field.RF1 wrote:Following that logic, we should not be that far behind them in NIT seeding. Rhode Island should be a 3.
Not sure how I feel about "the first four out" being #1 seeds... that just continues the spread of incompetence.

My guess is that URI and UConn will be a 2 and 3 in some order in Temple's region. I'd go UConn 2 and URI 3.

Per the new rule as the first four out of the NCAA Tournament, Old Dominion, Richmond, Temple, and Colorado State are all NIT #1 seeds.

Re: 2015 NIT
I'm really confused how Richmond is considered better than us. It makes no sense to me. Based on what, exactly? We beat them head-up (in their gym), finished ahead of them in the conference and went further in the conference tournament. What else do you need to know? I feel like all the criteria used in ranking college basketball teams are dumb.

Probably because they beat VCU twice which is better than any win we have.

Re: 2015 NIT
They had a slightly better RPI and had wins over VCU (2x) and Davidson. That is the the extent of their better seeding. By all other measurements, Rhody was better - URI 22-9 vs 19-13, URI better finish in the A-10 regular season, URI went further in the A-10 Tournament, URI won at Richmond in only head to head meeting.TruePoint wrote:I'm really confused how Richmond is considered better than us. So at what point does the whole season matter more than two games? Taking it all the way to its logical extreme, what if they went 2-28 and beat VCU twice? Would that matter?URI96 wrote:Probably because they beat VCU twice which is better than any win we have.

Better RPI, better SOS, 3 more wins against the 0'fer that we had against the top 50 for starters...Keep in mind if we're a 2 or 3 seed, they aren't THAT much better than us...who cares as long as we're in the field.

The committee would have had them as one of the last four out for them to get a one seed. That's the shocking part
