Game 15: URI vs. Charlotte, in-game
Might as well start this topic up! I'm live blogging, and it was nice to see ATP for a couple minutes before the game, too. Mike Aaman might be starting today - he is at least according to the pre-game computer lineup: http://narragansett.patch.com/articles/ ... game-event

watching on gamecast... looks like each team has 2 scorers and everybody else is just hucking the ball. this keeps up this is a game style URI can play with

Re: Game 15: URI vs. Charlotte, in-game
Pretty much. For URI, Powell and Buchanan (?!?) are playing well on offense, and everyone else is iffy. Malone has two long 3s, and Malesevic hit a long J, and that's it.urirx wrote:watching on gamecast... looks like each team has 2 scorers and everybody else is just hucking the ball. this keeps up this is a game style URI can play with

Holding steady through some foul trouble. Nik hit a FG when we needed it.
Last 5 min were rough.

Charlotte 58, URI 50. A total of 19 points in the second half is not going to get it done against almost anyone.

Re: Game 15: URI vs. Charlotte, in-game
Again when we don't hit all cylinders we loose period. The rebounding disadvantage was a sobering stat. We got others in double figures, but with X on the bench for most of the first 1/2 we held on. 0-11 from three in the second 1/2 did us in, mostly all decent looks at it, couple of close shots also missed. On to St. Louis and we are where many expected us to be, looking up at the entire A-10 stack.

Re: Game 15: URI vs. Charlotte, in-game
Thought we should've won this one, even with the crazy rebounding margin. TJ played great in the first half and barely saw the court in the second. Tried way too hard to get X involved in the offense in the 2nd half and it completely disrupted our flow. Nik is a complete non-factor, and probably wouldn't have played in the first half if X hadn't been in foul trouble. He's become the last guy off the bench and has the talent to be a starter. Disappointing.

Re: Game 15: URI vs. Charlotte, in-game
Wow! Just got back from the game.
Took my granddaughter Charlotte to the game.
$25.00 for a 4 year old?????? Are you kidding me?
Anyway, awful game all around.
X no shots, 2 fouls and out for most of the half, couldn't hit the ocean with
a beachabll in the second half.
Powell began brilliantly, and likely wore down, from a physical game.
Nik, another no show game. Horrible defense.
Malone played well, and visibly tired toward the end.
Our inside offense-non existant. Ditto for our inside defense, which
got slaughtered all game long. Rebounding? Pathetic.
Missed free throws, bad passing, poor ball movement.
Really no improvment at all. I thought we could build on our
comeback against Richmond. Wrong!
The zone defense was exploited by Charlotte.
I didn't see TJ playing a "great" first half. He missed free throws and open shots.
Another blah crowd.
Some day, we're going to get home court officiating. SOS.
Just a rotten day.

Re: Game 15: URI vs. Charlotte, in-game
TJ was 1-1 from the field for the entire game, and it was a lay-up. Got fouled a lot, played high-energy defense. 4-8 from the line is not great, but he's improving every game and I would've liked to see more of him in the 2nd half when it became obvious that Nik and X weren't going to be much of a factor.

Anyone know why Bobby Hurley was so fired up in the second half? Looks like there was some jawing going on with some of the Charlotte players.

Re: Game 15: URI vs. Charlotte, in-game
When you get your three headed center scoring 4 whole points
9 whole rebounds and ZERO offensive rebounds, that's a problem.
With all the people walking by as play was going on, I must've thought TJ shot instead of Malone
or someone else.
We have an LA Laker crowd that get there as the game is going on.
I'm so far on the opposite end of where the URI bench is, I only see Dan, and
can't pick up any actions happening on the bench.
Why don't they introduce coach Tirone before the games?

Just think of how much better this team would be with the rebounding of Big O and Biruta. That alone will make this team so much better next year.

I saw on tv during a timeout as players walked off court , Braswell from Chralotte gave a shoulder into the chest of Malone.URI96 wrote:Anyone know why Bobby Hurley was so fired up in the second half? Looks like there was some jawing going on with some of the Charlotte players.

I caught most of the game on my computer at work, and could see the anger on Bobby's face during a couple of time outs. I think he felt, as I did, that we were getting manhandled without getting the calls that Charlotte got. I think the incident with Brasswell was a culmination of us playing like crap, and not getting any help from the refs. I am not saying we would have won with better officiating, but it would have helped.

Re: Game 15: URI vs. Charlotte, in-game
just back, only good part of today was that traffic on 95 was very light
we need strong play from powell, the usual game from X and either Malone or Malesevic to be above average to have a chance. we dont have 1 of those 3 and we lose.
today we got strong play from mike and dre in the first half, a below average game from X and the new Nik who does nothing, is passive on offense, and is a liability. tj did show flashes of having his feet back and finally healthy, i look fwd to seeing if he gets more aggressive in the back half of this season.
we had 21 points after 10 minutes and then scored 29 in the next 30. the refs allowed for physical play, on both sides, but that does not help us at all. they were in our shorts on the perimeter, esp mike, dre and X. and they threw us around like rag dolls inside. they had a very beefy frontline.

REBOUNDING!!! Brooks and Hare look like their playing volleyball out there. They need to grab the ball instead of tipping and tapping at it. They each tapped a ball in for Charlotte, those 4 points were basically the difference in the game.

While we're at it, can somebody please work with Hare on
SHOOTING the ball instead of shotputting it with one hand in
the general direction of the basket.
He gets the ball, and I swear, he hyperventalates, and ditches the ball
as soon as he can.

Re: Game 15: URI vs. Charlotte, in-game
Hare is very athletic, a great leaper and shot blocker. As a polished offensive talent, or rebounder, he's got miles to go. We all know that.
This coaching staff knows he's a project, but I'm confident they'll get him there. He's going to have a LOT more help next year.
As for the team, when X struggles, it will be very hard to score. Our A10 opponents are pretty smart, they will concentrate on X, so somebody else has to step up. Not going to happen on many nights this season.
Hey, 14 more games and one more offseason until massive help arrives. I'm just going to sit back and be patient. It's hard, I know.

Charlotte players were jawing at Rhody coaches. Classless. Re: Game 15: URI vs. Charlotte, in-game
Finally, made it home after the game - dinner, visiting and then a drive. Some comments about what i saw.
We lost because X shot poorly. If he had a normal game we would have won. We could have won other ways but this team needs X's offense.
Every time MikeA left the floor, Charlotte had a field day inside against Ryan and Jordan. Ryan gives more than Jordan, but I prefer seeing Jordan out there because he is a freshman.
It seems as though URI has a team of players with boys' bodies who are playing against teams of players with men's bodies. This has been the case too many times this season.
Opponents are making MikeP work very hard on both ends of the court in order to wear him out. When he tires, he is much less effective. URI has no viable substitute. 90% of what is wrong with MikeP can be attributed to playing longer than he can handle.
It was good to see old friend Des Oliver before the game.

Re: Game 15: URI vs. Charlotte, in-game
The first ominous sign in yesterday's game occurred when URI lost its 7 point lead in the last two minutes of first half leaving for the break clinging to only a one point lead. The swoon the Rams seem to take in the last minutes of both halves is a problem that hasn't been corrected. That the Rams came out to re-build the lead in the early minutes of the second half was encouraging, but no change in the rebounding differential and combined with the return of atrocious shooting spelled doom. We just can't seem to get all these guys clicking at the same time. Against Richmond, Powell was 1-10 and Munford was hot, Powell was way better yesterday and Munford couldn't hit a barn. Credit Charlotte with great defense, but X had get some wide open looks and missed.

Re: Game 15: URI vs. Charlotte, in-game
OB,
Any thought that fatigue sets in at the end of halfs?
They just don't seem to have the legs at half and game end.
I was watching Malone at the end of the game, and you could see, he
was moving alot slower than he was at the beginning of the game.
It accounts for Powell not being as affective late in the game as the earlier parts.
Can't blame anyone for that. The players who are subs, except for Aaman, provide
almost zero on the offensive end. This forces Hurley to maximize
minutes for his starters.
Shooter's legs go and the shots come up a little short.
No solution to this, unfortunately. It's why we've had leads in so many games,
and were in games until the last few minutes.
We have enough to get the lead, but don't have the stamina to finish strong.

Re: Game 15: URI vs. Charlotte, in-game
The view from 205
1. Figured we were in a little bit of trouble, when we shoot 52% in the first half and only up one. Not very good foul shooting.
2. TJ played well in his limited minutes.
3. You have to realize how frustrated coach is. - The team is playing hard, but offense is so inconsistent.
4. Charlotte looked so relaxed before the game started, they are so athletic and physical they can get away with some sloppy play.
5. Good move by the 49 coach calling a time out after X scored the first four points of the second half. Obviously X will be a marked man for the rest of the year.
6. Could see Coach yellling about the lack of rebounding, specifically holding on to the ball and not tapping it.
7. Part of the problem with Nik is that there is really no one to take away his minutes. Yes, Mike A. can but can Bigby or anyone else give us some points. By far the biggest disappointment, two open looks for three's at crunch time and came up empty.
8. Section is usually right on the mark - this is our team, can you make Ryan or Jordan into a physical rebounder? can you make me the history teacher into an AP physics expert? no
9. Big O and Birutas next year, can't wait!
10. Go Rhody!

Sorry to say, but this team will be a lot better off without him next year.
He just doesn't seem to have the proper attitude to play for Dan. Last year, it didn't matter.
He's got some talent body wise, but none above the neck.

Re: Game 15: URI vs. Charlotte, in-game
Much of our problem continues to be in the rebounding department.
We lost a lot with the loss of Holton who was 3rd in the A10 in Rebounding and led the A10 in Offensive Rebounding as a Freshman - nobody has stepped in to come close to filling that void. Billy also was strong and grabbed his share of rebounds.
Looks at yesterday - the usual story:
- Willie Clayton, only a Freshman for Charlotte grabbed 13 rebounds in 30 minutes
- Pierria Henry, a 6'4" soph, grabbed 10 rebounds in 34 minutes - 10 rebounds for a guard!!
In contrast for URI rebounds were:
- 3 in 19 minutes for Brooks
- 3 in 21 minutes for Aaman
- 3 in 24 minutes for Hare
- 5 in 34 minutes for Malone
- 2 in 19 minutes for Malesevic
URI was outrebounded 37-23.
Again, a freshman gets 13 rebounds for Charlotte and a guard 10 while URI's biggest rebounder was Malone with 5.
Our guards don't typically rebound well either.
Nik has never been a good rebounder or a good defensive player - not in any of his years here - not surprised to see his playiing time diminish by Coach Hurley. He needs to step up and grab boards as a Forward on this team and an upperclassman

I think the ship as already sailed for Nik getting with any program and on any page to make any significant contribution to this team, unfortunately, what we see is what we/re gonna get. His slashes into lane don't seem to be effective lately.....

All of Nik's issues are mental. He has the skills to be good but doesn't have the mental fortitude. He focuses too much on the refs and not the game and lets his temper control him. Doesn't even have enough concentration and focus to be a good free throw shooter which is pretty sad for someone that considers himself a 3pt threat.

Even at this early point in the season, his(Nik) minutes should decrease. Spend the coaching energy coaching on individual efforts in high concentrations and playing time on further developing Jordan Hare's low post and rebounding skills, and TJ's offensive scoring output. IMO.

True, 105. Give the PT to the younger guys who want to learn, and need to learn.
Nik is past history. If he doesn't care, sit him.

X has shot poorly all year. He is what he is. Rhody wins when he plays above his average. He shoots 40% from the floor and under 30% from three. I'm not sure why people think otherwise. He is the best that Rhody has but his "normal game" isn't good enough to carry this Rhody team to a win.Rhody72 wrote:Finally, made it home after the game - dinner, visiting and then a drive.
I get that there are very few options but I really hope this doesn't bleed into next year.
I'm sure I will screamed at again but X just isn't as good as a lot think he is.

X is a good player, not a great one. He's very streaky, we know that.
He's under a lot of pressure to score, due to being virtually the only go to guy on the team.
Yes, I wish he would make more of his open shots. The ones under pressure, how can you blame him for that?
As for next year, a whole new ball game. URI will be scoring a ton more inside, but yes they need more outside shooting too. That's what the Hurleys are concentrating on, getting another shooter in here. I'm confident they will find one.

Re: Game 15: URI vs. Charlotte, in-game
I agree that we should have some better options next year and the full load shouldn't fall on X next year, but what exactly is the point your trying to make. X is not the best player ever but he's doing pretty well in a system where he has to find most of his shots by himself and at the end of shot clock. That means that URI is working to find better shots but they don't have many players to give that to them this year. Given we will have much more talented players, especially with regards to scoring the basketball next year, I don't see any issue with X fiiting into that system. He's a very unselfish great player who is doing exactly what we need him to do.

Re: Game 15: URI vs. Charlotte, in-game
Leave it to Gabrone to jump on X after a bad game.
He was widely regarded as one of the four or five best juco players in the country,
last year.
He's done damned well for us. He averages 17 plus a game. We lost by 8, he scored 9 under his average, 10 lower than his
coming into the game average.
IF HE PLAYED HIS AVERAGE GAME, URI WINS.
Got it?
