Re: '15 JUCO C - Johnathan Hamilton
I think the entire offensive game is probably a bit rough. I know it's a highlight film, but there was a single post play in the whole package (an awkward looking hook shot). If he was backing down and dunking on guys, it probably would have been in there. That being said, even if you can't run a play for him, at his size he would still be an incredibly valuable player for URI. The blocks looked pretty legit, with him nailing a couple guys as they were pulling up, not just him coming off the weakside when guards drive.twisted3829 wrote:looks like he averages 8.3 ppg 9.2 rpg and 4.4 blocks per game

Well, he's big, can run, and looks quick.
Definitely something we don't have.
How deep are we in recruiting him?
The article just shows "interest".

Re: '15 JUCO C - Johnathan Hamilton
I know he has the height that we need, but I'm a little skeptical after seeing that video. I don't see much skill there and he seems to be playing against a bunch of 5 footers.

Not sure that his highlight reel is doing him any justice. Stats and other schools being interested are more notable; he looks like he's playing kids in pick up at the local Y in the video.

The kid also doesn't need to be an offensive dynamo. At 7ft and seemingly being able to move a bit, he can be valuable just on those two attributes alone.

We just need somebody that can be a physical presence and rebound inside the paint. This would be a steal at seven feet tool.

As long as this can contribute. That's it. We can't have both Iffy and another big kid sitting at the end of the bench. This one needs to be able to play.

Looks real raw. As much as we need height I think we need bulk more. Larsen weighs 260 and that's the kind of player we have no answer for. I want a player like that not a skinny 7-footer.

A raw player can be fine, but there's a big difference between investing in one that can be here four years versus two.

Re: '15 JUCO C - Johnathan Hamilton
I wonder how a bulky guy would fit into what we try to do defensively. It seems like we really value athleticism more than girth. A bulky guy that can move a little is one thing, but I don't know if you're going to see a big lumbering space eater here.Iggy1979 wrote:Looks real raw. Agree with TP. We "blitz" ball screens, cant do that with someone who can't move well. I think ________ is actually the prototype for the kind of big DH would want. Tall and athletic, over wide body.

Well I wasn't going to say it, but... there's a reason they tried to make it work. But, for all of the obvious reasons, it wasn't going to.bigappleram wrote:Agree with TP. Chris Silva would have been perfect, but he wanted something different.

Please --------- pass. There's something not quite right with this guy. Nothing personal, but, he just lacks the dynamicism. Even against what looks like the weekly pick-up game….
If there's one spot remaining, make it count with the most talented in the team's "Need Section" or the most talented player, period. OR, DON'T WASTE IT ON SOMEONE WHO IS NOT GOING TO BE AN IMPACT MEMBER OF THE TEAM, AND SAVE IT FOR NEXT YEAR.

Re: '15 JUCO C - Johnathan Hamilton
I see a lot of bad habits. Probably because he's a foot taller then everyone
Else on the court. He does have good timing with the block shots.
I think Dan can coach him up. It's not like we need him to score next year.
Just rebound and defend. He would also enable Hassan to play his natural
Position which would make us a much better team defensively .

Re: '15 JUCO C - Johnathan Hamilton
Here we are folks at most we are 2 bits away from being a truly elite team next season. We need a knock down spot up shooter (would be nice if could find the pick off the dribble) and a big who can assist HM with defending the paint.
I am not even taking Iverson into account here.......as I am uncertain what he will bring towards addressing the needs.
We have come a long way in a short time friends!

Hamilton might not be very polished, but he seems athletic and is undeniably tall. Sounds good to me. We were asking for a big who could rebound and defend. This would be it. Offense is not required.

Thompson is very promising as a shooter.
I worry about taking a raw big, because who on this
staff is really a big man coach?
No Larry Farmer-ARD type. Kind of scary, when it's not about guards.

I don't know who they were playing against in that highlight video but Jacksonville plays in what looks like a pretty good Division 1 JUCO conference. A couple of teams in their conference are in the JUCO D1 Top 25 and Hamilton is 4th in the country in blocks.

As Ace said earlier to, especially when its a 2 year raw big and not a 4 year raw big.rodfromcranston wrote:Thompson is very promising as a shooter.

It doesn't look like he is that raw except probably on the free throw line. He looks more advanced than ChuChu up at PC and moves around just as well and it looks like he is not as thin. I wonder what his passing skills are but I would take a serious look.

Just because they're tall doesn't mean they're worth anything.
Blake. Vedder.
Agree with Ace that if you're going to take someone raw cough* Onyekaba cough* than they better be here for 4 years so that you have a chance to develop them.
No use for a 2 year raw big who has played against guards in juco. Wait and get the right guy, we've turned the program around now, we don't need to grab just anyone to fill a spot.

Re: '15 JUCO C - Johnathan Hamilton
https://texashoops.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1692608Giving off the WOW! factor over the weekend was Jacksonville College's Johnny Hamilton. Head coach Jody Bailey has been raving about Hamilton and saying how special his big man is. The 6-foot-11 Trinidad native seems to play about 18 inches above the rim. On the defensive end of the ball, Hamilton is a rim protector, blocking shots and rebounding. Offensively, Hamilton is a little raw but tries to put his entire arm through the basket when he is around the basket to score. He does play with his back to the rim and makes moves after a quick dribble.

I still say the one thing URI can't defend is a power guy in the lane. We don't need another thin big man. Someone in the mold of Gustys would be better. A guy who can box out and defend.

Agree Iggy. We need a space eater, who can move some.

The problem we may run into is that larger big men (prime example being Larsen of GW) give us some trouble, but could a guy like Larsen play in the system we're trying to run here? I'm not sure a guy like that fits well with uptempo fast breaks, extreme pressure defense, with quick feet and our ball screen coverage that our big guys currently employ.

Re: '15 JUCO C - Johnathan Hamilton
A guy who can box out and defend doesn't need to be in the mold of Gustys. If this guy can rebound and defend (up to the staff to determine, but numbers would indicate that he can), I don't care that he's not built like Watson. Who, speaking of which, is still on our roster next season. A 6'8" 240 player would be more redundant for us than would a 6'10" 220 player.Iggy1979 wrote:I still say the one thing URI can't defend is a power guy in the lane. Re: '15 JUCO C - Johnathan Hamilton
How many post-up true fives that are legit threats to score do we see on a yearly basis? How many even exist? Three or four in the country? I agree that we need a big guy who can alter shots and rebound, but I feel like if we let this board set the criteria we would only settle for a hall of fame center. We need a guy at least 6'10" that isn't skinny and has a polished post game and is a force on the glass, in addition to satisfying the Hurley requirement that he have the ability to move fairly well to blitz ball screens and stuff. Good luck with that.Iggy1979 wrote:I still say the one thing URI can't defend is a power guy in the lane. We don't need another thin big man. Someone in the mold of Gustys would be better. Re: '15 JUCO C - Johnathan Hamilton
Andrew and TP hit the nail on the head for me. One, could a "space eater" as some call it hedge out and blitz ball screens, cover his man out to 30-35 feet, and be a disruptor on defense. Our defense is a team defense...yes Terrell, Garrett and Hassan get a lot of credit, but Gil is holding his weight as well and is much improved on the perimeter and in general on defensive end. Second, how many "space eater" 5s did we face this year -- Larsen, N'Doye, Zack, Desrosiers. None of them hurt us all that much. My priority would not be to find a guy to fill a need in 25% of the games we play (at most) if he is unusable in the other 75%. So if we are going for a true Big he better be able to cover all the 5 men who arent really 5 men. In our league alone only 1 (GW) of the top 5 teams have true centers - VCU, Dayton, Davidson, URI do not.
To be clear before the "tall men lobby" comes pounding on me, I dont think we can win big time without another force down low to join Hassan, but I am less caught up with his exact height and size and more concerned with his skill set. Dan certainly has a system and style of play, guys will have to fit into that or I dont think he will want them. If anything I see us playing at an even more intense tempo next year, hopefully matching our offensive tempo with our offensive one.
