He's in school, hopefully keeping up his grades. APR crap as usual.
As to his future, who wants him, with his reliability issues?

Re: NCAA Transfers, 2014 Edition
I always felt ____ was a tall kid, who everyone said to,
"Gee, you should play basketball", and did.
I doubt he had a real passion for the game.
There doesn't seem to be a host of schools beating his door down to
transfer.
Spring semester begins Monday at many schools.
If he stays and finishes the semester, he will risk three years without
playing D-1 ball.
Of course, he can go D-2 or NAIA and play next year.

The thing is, with all that talent, he was only averaging about 5 pts. and 2 rebounds a game for Memphis this year, in about 11 minutes a game PT.
And he's a soph. Something didn't click there.

Josh Pastner can sure recruit them, but does he really coach them up?? Does he really develop the talent he accrues?
That's what separates people like Tony Bennett, Mark Few, Kevin Ollie and Bo Ryan from those like Pastner, Lavin, et al.,

Re: NCAA Transfers, 2014 Edition
No, he's on campus, was not at the game.
They're waiting for his transcript to enroll him officially.
Do yourselves a favor.
Look this kid up on You Tube. He's 6'9", was a PG in high school,
great handle, good 3 point shooter, can get to the basket, runs the floor
like a deer. Think Lamar Odom's game.
I don't know what happened with him at Memphis, but he was #26 ranked coming out of high school.
He's a swingman, not a big, but so what? Hurley plays four guards anyway.
Hearing Dan had to be convinced and wasn't overly thrilled about bringing Iverson here.
Time to think like a real program and take some chances, Dan.
I will say this now, this kid has more talent and more NBA potential
than anyone in our present program.
He should be eligible in December 2015. Perfect!

Look at all those kids Calipari has had at Kentucky. Loaded with talent, attitude and ego many, and pampered AAU lives as well. And like or dislike Calipari, he gets those kids to work hard and buy into being a team.

The former McDonald's All American had been given several warnings, but Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski's patience had run its course and he jettisoned the talented wing Thursday afternoon.
"It was an accumulation of a whole lot of residue," one source close to the Duke program told ESPN. "It had built up over time."
"His issues didn't outweigh his talent," he added.
It's not all that surprising that Krzyzewski opted to sever ties with Sulaimon. I'd heard about the sulking, the moping and the moodiness shortly after he arrived as a highly touted recruit out of Texas. However, as a freshman, Sulaimon's attitude was kept under wraps by seniors Mason Plumlee and Ryan Kelly. A year ago, there was a major leadership void and Sulaimon's attitude became more of an ongoing issue.

I believe I read this was the first player ever kicked off the team by Coach K. Think about that, in 40 years. He either knows how to pick em or has an uncanny ability to get kids to buy in to the Duke way.

I think Iverson wants to truly resurrect his career.
I also think he looked here, because it's close to home, he knows Terrell, and he could become a big contributor if he commits to working hard and buying in to the Hurley way.
Yes, Dan is taking a calculated risk, and so is Iverson.
I think it's worth a shot.

Jaren Sina just left Seton Hall.
He was very highly rated coming out of prep school.
Good shooting PG.
His father played for URI under Tom Penders on
the Sweet 16 team.
Any thoughts? I don't think we recruited him. He's from NJ.

Exactly!
Seton Hall is imploding. Freshmen fighting with seniors.
They looked good early on, but the wheels fell off a couple of
weeks ago, and it's getting worse.

Re: NCAA Transfers, 2014 Edition
I saw him play AAU and was never impressed to the degree to which he was rated. When his name surfaced numerous times on our Board (because of the reference to his father having played here) I mentioned that I was not so impressed. I did not think he was quick or surprisingly not such a good shooter for a guard. So this announcement does not surprise me at all.
Consider Sina originally verballed to Alabama
Then he changed his mind and verballed to Northwestern
Then there was a Coaching change at Northwestern and he again changed to Seton Hall.
I always thought he was aiming too high. He is not lighting quick.
I looked his shooting stats today as I don't really follow him or Seton Hall:
No surprise to me - he shot 37% last year from the field
He is shooting 32% this year - and Seton Hall is sinking having lost 6 of their last 8
Interesting that Seton Hall comes to Providence this Saturday but he won't be playing.
Pass in my opinion - I like our current guards and our incoming Christion Thompson.

Re: NCAA Transfers, 2014 Edition
Kid was heavily recruited, so some big name coaches must
have seen something beyond rankings.
He'd have 2 years eligibility.
I'm thinking Biggie will be a senior next year, so a backup
PG with experience might be useful. Other than Jarvis,
we have no real PG after next year, unless we recruit one for 2016.
Thompson is a swingman/sg, and please don't start with EC being a
real PG. He's not even close.
Sina is no world beater, but I saw him in a few games at SH, where
he didn't look bad at all.

Re: NCAA Transfers, 2014 Edition
Just my opinion Rod, that's all. There is a reason Seton Hall is jettisoning him from the team during the season, a starter no less, and he is shooting 32% field goals - that is horrible.rodfromcranston wrote:Kid was heavily recruited, so some big name coaches must

I just think we can do better than Sina. He would also have to sit out a year so I am sure we will recruit better candidates by then. This program is opening eyes and Dan will be able to recruit top caliber players just like in the Jim Harrick days. I don't see a need to take Seton Hall's cast offs.
But Dan should know the kid pretty well being from New Jersey so if he wants him I'll support it.
I will not bring up EC - you and I have very different views on him that's for sure.

Re: NCAA Transfers, 2014 Edition
I'm not hot to get Sina like I was for Iverson.
I just threw it out as an option to when we only project
Garrett as the only real PG on the roster.
TJ leaves this year, Biggie the next.
If it's a 2016 or a transfer, we need another PG.
Oh, and if Sina was a starter with SH, I doubt he was asked to leave.
He said it was not a good situation for him, and that's why he left.
"One of the first highly-rated recruits to commit to Willard, Sina had been a model citizen for the Hall in the classroom and on the court. He never had discplinary issues. Willard and others praised his work ethic and unselfishness. At times, Willard goaded him to be more selfish in hunting for his 3-point shot."

Re: NCAA Transfers, 2014 Edition
Odd time for a transfer. Last night's loss must've been the last straw. I watched some of that game. I agree he's not lightning quick, but he's got a good handle, is a good passer and has good form on his shot. I'm guessing his FT percentage is high.
Not to change the topic, but the more immediate result of this likely will be that Willard is in real trouble and you know who will be mentioned on and on ...

Re: NCAA Transfers, 2014 Edition
Could be that the situation just got out of control and Sina or his Dad or both just wanted out him out of there.
To think that Seton Hall was once ranked #19 earlier in the year -
What a total disaster and meltdown. I'll have to watch Saturday's game versus PC just to observe this continuing soap opera.
So considering all this going on maybe Dan does reach out to Sina - no doubt Dan knows the kid and the situation at Seton Hall plus his own situation on potential recruits in the pipeline for 2016 at URI to make the best decision.
"Meanwhile, multiple sources tell The Setonian that Whitehead and Gibbs came to near-blows in a team huddle during a second half timeout around the 11:19 mark of Tuesday's game. No punches were thrown but Gibbs had to be separated by associate head coach Shaheen Holloway as things escalated. Apparently, the two guards have been at the center of the team's ongoing locker room divide.
Seton Hall players were not made available to the media following the game, though Whitehead tweeted, “Imma Give Everybody What They Want That’s It Watch,” shortly after the game. He also changed both his profile picture and cover pictures to photos of pitch blackness on his Twitter account. Following the Marquette loss, Whitehead tweeted, "No More Of That Brother Stuff Strictly Business Partners."

If he were a 45% shooter from three I would consider it, but I don't see a clear path to playing time for him. It is better to start staggering some of these classes. You don't want to have 3 senior guards three years from now.

Before anyone buys into the Dan to SH bullshit,
maybe you might want to consider this:
Willard was extended just last year to 2020.
He was extended after going 5-13 in the Big East.
They extended him on that lousy record, so do you think
he'll get fired by a late season collapse?
Think any school is going to buy out five years of anyone's contract?

Seton Hall is a mess right now. Willard did what he had to to bring in recruits.
Regardless, the fans were brutal towards Sina. Comparisons were made to a previous pg's situation. I hope he ends up at a good place.

Re: NCAA Transfers, 2014 Edition
I'd take Sina in a heartbeat. He's a straight arrow and seems wise beyond his years having started all but one game in his time there. He has a great attitude and would accept his role...whatever that may be. He'd fit perfectly as another guard in Dan's stable. Plus, I loved his father's game and contributions to that '88 team.
The Hall was playing at their best when Whitehead was hurt. I kind of feel sorry for Willard (and Sterling Gibbs) as Willard went for broke when he hired Dwayne Casey as an assistant from Lincoln High School in order to get Whitehead, Rodriguez and Morton's son to commit. Whitehead seems like a poison and Sina probably read the writing on the wall and peaced out. I don't blame him. The Hall is Lincoln High School South and Sina still has time to salvage his career so he's looking elsewhere. Sadly, it's too late for Gibbs as he's already completed most of his junior year.

Re: NCAA Transfers, 2014 Edition
As far as getting Sina, there's one huge issue.
We only have one scholarship as of now.
We need a big man more than a guard who won't play for
another year.
Unless someone like Butler or Oneykaba decide to leave or
be counseled out of the program, nobody under 6'8" is coming here.

I don't see that a big issue. A scholarship can be created, like you said.rodfromcranston wrote:As far as getting Sina, there's one huge issue.
We only have one scholarship as of now.
We need a big man more than a guard who won't play for
another year.
Unless someone like Butler or Oneykaba decide to leave or
be counseled out of the program, nobody under 6'8" is coming here.

And I really think if Iffy really ever wants to play, he needs to drop to a lower level of play.

Not sure if transferring is an option for Iffy because of his wacky eligibility situation.

Butler should read the writing on the wall.

I hope he stays and is a good kid/student. He has gotten better. Not on the level of our other guys, but look at Duke they have 8-9 Scholly players? I hope we don't have to cull kids to get ahead.
I want to change my name to BlockIslandFerry

Re: NCAA Transfers, 2014 Edition
Sorry, but if you can upgrade the roster, do it.
This isn't Little League.
ALL big time schools do it. Calhoun made it an art form to
brizz players.
If Dan wants the program he says he wants, he needs to do
the same.
Now, come the sanctimonious, "Oh, that's soooo immoral" crapola.
