The refs! - 2014-2015
A very inexperienced crew last night, but what would you expect in a game against DII Pace.
For the Pace game we had the following trio of fine gentlemen:
Matt Lee http://statsheet.com/mcb/referees/matt-lee/
Mike Ashurst http://statsheet.com/mcb/referees/mike-ashurst
Keith Fogleman http://statsheet.com/mcb/referees/keith-fogleman
Didn't matter much how good or bad these guys were last night due to the score. Pace Head Coach, Pat Kennedy, was beside himself a few times regarding some questionable foul calls that went our way. There were definitely some petty foul calls both ways, but thems the rules.

Re: The refs! - 2014-2015
There was an administrative technical foul, which you don't see too often. Evan Gordinier, from Pace, checked in to the game wearing No. 21 but is listed on the roster wearing No. 23. Yes, folks, that's a technical foul.

Re: The refs! - 2014-2015
We have 15 fouls to give at the 5.
It looks like Watson will have to be the default 5,
instead of a PF.
So, Gil will b back to trying to guard bigs, and Oneykaba will
be in there to commit five fouls in five minutes.
Ugh!

Re: The refs! - 2014-2015
Most likely a mistake on a task given to assistant coach to enter the lineup correctly with names/jersely numbers into the official score book.....As for the refs, I will keep to my old opinion we will win/loose games based on the talent we have vs the opposition talent and not the refs work.....

Still not as dumb as the dunking in warm-ups once the officials are out on the court technical.

Only questionable call I remember was when a pace defender knocked it off out of one of our Rhody guys possession and it clearly went off that Rhody players knee. Pat was pretty upset at that call. Yeah technical was strange.

Re: The refs! - 2014-2015
Another inexperienced crew today. It showed. By inexperienced I don't look at years. I look at how many games these guess ref per year. The worst ones always seem to be the ones that ref 15-20 games per season.
For the UMass-Lowell game we had the following refs:
Bill Covington http://statsheet.com/mcb/referees/bill-covington
Tony Crisp http://statsheet.com/mcb/referees/tony-crisp
Joseph Palacz http://statsheet.com/mcb/referees/joseph-palacz
The worst of the bunch, in my opinion, was the muscle bound guy.. I believe it's Joseph Palacz. Had a few poor foul calls, and the travel call on EC was the worst of all.

Thought the refs made a few bad calls in the Umass-Lowell game, but all in all didn't seem all that bad. I've seen worse in years past...thought they did a competent job.

two of these guys were especially bad, so bad I believe they should be considered for suspensions, as in on the take, I'd love to walk right up to them if I saw them in public, give em a real solid kick to the shin and walk away laughing. Their show tonight was completely beyond poor, beyond incompetent and solidly unethical. I'm so tired of bad officiating, I want to see accountability for these humps.

Re: The refs! - 2014-2015
The calls that stick out to me...
Hassan being called for a block when he had the ball in a handoff situation and shielded away his man, just like happens hundreds of times during the season and is never called
The over the back call on Hassan when he got the rebound with his left hand, and the defender was holding his right one.
A couple of those charges on us were garbage, especially the one on Gil. It seems refs are back to ALWAYS giving the benefit of the doubt to the defensive player, many more charges and less blocks than last year.

Re: The refs! - 2014-2015
In ALL of my years of watching basketball I have NEVER EVER EEEEEEVER seen a crew as suspicious of being on the take as this one. The guy with the crew cut in particular was GROSSLY INCOMPETENT or taking a payout. There was no rhyme or reason for many of those calls. I had guys next to me and in front of me who are "rarely visibly pissed off" and even they were losing their shit last night. The call on Biruta when he was being bear hugged and the call on Martin while pulling down a rebound with one arm while the other was being held....were insane calls. Oh...and the block call on the ball exchange....HOW CAN YOU CALL A FOUL ON THE GUYS HANDING THE BALL TO ONE ANOTHER????? WHAT??!!Running Ram wrote:two of these guys were especially bad, so bad I believe they should be considered for suspensions, as in on the take, I'd love to walk right up to them if I saw them in public, give em a real solid kick to the shin and walk away laughing. Something needs to be down about that crew. The bald guy was ok. The other two were atrocious! Words can not adequately describe what my eyes bared whiteness to last night. WAY TO GO RHODY FOR playing against what seemingly was 6 men last night.

That Hassan call on the rebound was terrible. Overall i didn't think they were that bad...but I've seen some bad refs. Anytime you don't call a tech on Dan with some of the ways he gets in their faces I don't think you can be totally mad at them. Because believe me they could have and in an ot game that might have cost us the game. And on that note we really need one assistant that is confident enough to get hurley away from the ref when it becomes too much. Every coach needs that and I don't think we have it. It's going to cost us at some point. That being said dan seemed really good and positive with all the players just need a ref guard for him. Great win

Re: The refs! - 2014-2015
The biggest problem I see is that the refs are bad for a lot of games, not just ours.
Hardly a game goes by without people having issues with the refereeing.
You would at least think, that with us at home and a loud crowd behind us, that we would get the benefit of the doubt on some of the calls in a close game down the stretch.
We're not Duke at Cameron Indoor. But we should get some calls at home. Most home teams do, but I guess we aren't looked at with enough respect yet.
Hell, we're not close to what St. Joes's gets at home. And they suck right now.

I would say more about the officiating, but i would just be repeating what all of you have said. I can't remember how many times I screamed WHAT? After a call, but it was too often. so my referee report card gives them a solid F . They must have been on Acid because they were either hallucinating or they had scripted calls.. an now it's time to bring out the double dribble call and we'll follow that up with a foul on Biruta for allowing the defender to rap his arms around him and have the nerve to try to move.

Re: The refs! - 2014-2015
The worst one was Paul Szelc (his profile doesn't have a picture, but the other two do). Interestingly, he typically calls the least fouls and favors the home team more than the other two, according to the stats on statsheet. Which makes me even more suspicious he was on the take. I am always upset about officiating, but I usually assume they're just bad at their jobs. This was worse than that. He made at least a handful of calls that were truly indefensible and made absolutely no sense.RoadyJay wrote:THE WORST officiating crew I've been witness to at the Ryan Center. We won despite them. Here is an interview with him in his hometown paper: http://onmilwaukee.com/sports/articles/ ... ature.html
He actually says in the interview that he's doing his job if you don't notice him. LOL - fail. He's the first ref I've ever looked up information on after a game in the 20 years I've been following college basketball.

I thought when Parker fouled TJ in the OT that it should have been a flagrant foul - maybe I'm wrong on that but it is what I thought at the time. Also thought the foul on the rebound by Martin late in the ame was a bad call.
But in the end I don't think the officiating favored one team or the other - URI simply won the game outright.

Re: The refs! - 2014-2015
I was in the corner behind the Nebraska bench so I couldn't see exactly who it was, but someone did get between the ref and Hurley and then continued the conversation with the ref while Hurley went back to the huddle. And I'm not going to blame Hurley on this one, it certainly looked like it was the ref that was the aggressor for most of the argument once Hurley complained about a call. Not only did Dan not deserve to be T'd up, the ref should really be disciplined for his aggressiveness. Referees are supposed to have control over the game, not make it worse.15 Year Lurker wrote:Anytime you don't call a tech on Dan with some of the ways he gets in their faces I don't think you can be totally mad at them. If the last crew was the worst I've ever seen at the Ryan Center then this one was the worst I've ever seen on a neutral court They included:
Karl Hess http://statsheet.com/mcb/referees/karl-hess
Roger Ayers http://statsheet.com/mcb/referees/roger-ayers
Zelton Steed http://statsheet.com/mcb/referees/zelton-steed
A very experienced crew. It's what you would expect for a game with a "top 10" blue-blood team. Both Ayers and Hess ref about 100 games per year. These two are among the leaders in games called every year. Hard to explain then why 'grease head' Roger Ayers was so pathetic. Hess and Steed stunk too. Just about every call I saw went Kansas' way.

Criticize if you wish, but these guys hurt our chances to win this game. Breeding was horrible. Gave Hurley a warning.
I felt some of the calls started to go our way during a span in the second half. But then we would get boned by another terrible call.
Many of the fouls called on us I thought were great defense.

We lost the game to PC and it wasn't due to the refs. But let's face it, they weren't very good as has been noted in other threads about the game.
Luckie is very experienced and normally quite good.
O'Connell is also very experienced but beyond awful. He also called the Georgia Tech game and we all know how bad that crew was.

Tim Kelly http://statsheet.com/mcb/referees/tim-kelly
Matt Lee http://statsheet.com/mcb/referees/matt-lee
Corbett has been calling games for a long time... 35+ years.. and is one of the best in the business.
Matt Lee refs about 15 games per year. He had some very questionable foul calls against us. Lee also called the game against Pace. He is welcome back as long as we continue to blow out teams when he refs

I felt like they were calling a ton of fouls at times, but weren't favoring one team or the other. Just called a really tight game until it was way out of hand late.

Re: The refs! - 2014-2015
For Brown we had:
Tony Chiazza http://statsheet.com/mcb/referees/tony-chiazza
Donnie Eppley http://statsheet.com/mcb/referees/donnie-eppley
Bernard Clinton http://statsheet.com/mcb/referees/bernard-clinton
From the game thread it's apparent everyone felt these guys were bad... fortunately they were bad both ways, and in the end, did not factor much in the final result given our dominant performance.
After Brown received the bench warning, Brown Coach Mike Martin, was still trying to talk to Tony Chiazza about calls. I heard Tony say to him that he was "not going to talk to him about every play" and that he had "lost that privilege"
Martin was dumbfounded by this, that Chiazza would actually no longer talk to him. Martin said "what about Danny?" as if to say Chiazza was favoring Hurley and still talking to him even though he had also received a bench warning.
I eventually saw Martin and Chiazza speaking again... although it was never very civil.
My son had one exchange with Chiazza in the final minutes of the game. Chiazza came over to my son and asked him if I was his Dad. My son said "Yes." He then asked him, "Is he giving you a headache yet?" My son said "No." Chiazza responded, "Well he's giving me one."

It's Mike Martin. Glen Miller is their former coach, now an assistant at UConn.

Mike Martin is great. I wish them well in the Ivy League this season.
I think Smarty captured the referee situation pretty well in this tweet-

Interestingly, compared to many of our other games, this was a pretty experienced crew.
