I enjoyed the fact the parachute drop seemed irrelevant last night. The game was center stage.

I don't recall being on the Jumbotron. Nobody near me mentioned it.
ATP, Blue Man, Blue Ram, Ramulous, am I right?
Then again, I was watching the floor, not the Jumbotron.

Rod
From where I sit I can't even see the jumbotron. So can't help you out. I did however notice the first two rows of 205 like to keep seated during the most epic game in a decade. So memo to those people, next year is a reseating and I'm taking at least 2 of those seats.

That was by far the best crowd i have ever seen at the Ryan Center, especially the students. It was already loud when we got in at about 6:20. maybe a lot of the fans will come back to the next game just to see if they can have the same fun. I thought the officiating was as usual, give the opponent the benefit of the doubt as often as possible. and they threw in some head scratchers like the foul on Martin on a put back, a double dribble on EC and a travel on EC a couple steps over mid court when he picked up the dribble and stepped forward which is perfectly legal. what a fun night! Why has Iffy been benched the past two games? Is he on double secret probation that we don't know about? Great game, great win, now drop one on Kansas on Thanksgiving so we can have something else to be thankful for. Rod, what row were you in/ I was in row L so maybe it was me behind you?

One more thing to mention. The National Anthem was performed better than I have ever heard it. The young lady that sang it was better than tremendous. Does anyone know if she is a Rhody student.

I want 2000 students at the next game. A crowd like that would scare the shit out of Delaware St. Doesn't matter the opponent. The atmosphere would be the same. This is how I remember URI basketball!!!!

The enthusiasm of the students and the crowd was fantastic...I fed off that energy and ran with it all night.
ATP referred to me as "Maestro" at Mews...which is definitely appropriate. Those kids were responsive to everything and anything I said.
I can only hope that atmosphere becomes the norm and not the exception.

No, Luke, it wasn't you.
As far as Oneykaba, I just feel he hasn't improved any,
if at all, since his very first game. Actually he's never
remotely approached that, or the hype he came here with.
Maybe staff has realized that he's like Butler, and not going to compete
in these type games.

I don't know why we don't schedule more Saturday night games. That's why the crowd and especially the students were so great. If the Nebraska game was at 2 we would have had about 7,000 if we were lucky and it wouldn't have been as loudluke wrote:That was by far the best crowd i have ever seen at the Ryan Center, especially the students. I did not realize at the time that the Pied Piper was a bad guy and not just a dude that children followed around because he was good at the flute. Haha.

Re: Game #3 - Rhode Island vs. (21) Nebraska - Saturday, Nov
Sorry for the late post
A couple of comments from section 205
1. Blue Ram is right. I'm in row E and no one in front of me chooses to stand up.
2. 2:30 p.m. Ram football team charges the field after victory and runs to sing the fight song with the band,
9:30 p.m. Students charge the floor after upset win
It can't get much better than that.
3. When the score was tied late in the game, I felt the building shake.
4. Love watching TJ play defense.
5. Will give a pass to the two freshmen from the foul line last night. Third varsity game. Hopefully, they will improve.
6. Do we have players who can hit a mid range jump shot. I think we do, the Nebraska defense made it difficult to do.
7. During warm ups, EC could not hit anything. Maybe he should warm up earlier.
8. Iffy was a no show. But if we are going to get through three games in four days, others might get more playing time.
9. Butler, no show, Was coach waiting for Nebraska to play zone.
10. I love 205.
11. Trivia - what did Don Kaull say right after we beat Kansas?
12. Go Rhody!

None for me, but I was nervous for her...
so I might have missed it in my head.
Looking at the lyrics online I think she did
get them all.
She was excellent!!
I was hoping she would wave or something,
but she looked like she wanted off the floor
faster than she could walk.
so I might have missed it in my head.

Re: Game #3 - Rhode Island vs. (21) Nebraska - Saturday, Nov
My comments,
DEFENSE:
- While neither team shot well, the defensive pressure from both teams was very, very intense
- TJ with a huge steal in the OT
- With 2 minutes 38 seconds to go in OT EC with an incredible block at the hoop on a breakaway by Nebraska then Martin grabbed the rebound. This was huge.
- Martin with 4 blocked shots
- Terrell with a tremendous defensive effort on the All American candidate Petteway. There is a reason Petteway was only 5-18 FG. And when Terrell was not on him TJ was. Petteway hurt his ankle in the 2nd half amongst the physical play. I watched the Trainor put a ton of wrap on his ankle and he still hobbled badly up to the front of the bench to sit by the Coaches - he wanted back in the game badly. Got to hand it to Petteway as many players would have opted to remain out of the game. Tough player, excellent player - but he faced a buzz-saw defensive effort from Terrell.
REBOUNDING:
- Leading rebounder in the game was Hassan Martin with 12. Only a Soph.
- Incredible as I sat about 5 rows up from the court with eyes even with the Rim, I watched Martin many times go well above the rim to snatch rebounds. He is truly amazing.
- 2nd Leading rebounder in the game, for both teams, was EC Mathews with 10. So EC gets a double-double against a Top 25 Team - not too shabby. EC has a truly great nose for the ball, great basketball instincts
- In the first half especially, Nebraska did not shoot well but it seemed like EVERY time we got the rebound after the miss. Whether is was Biruta, Martin, EC or others it seemed like Nebraska never got a 2nd shot
- We outrebounded Nebraska on Offensive Rebounds 16-6. Biruta, Martin and Reischel each had 4 offensive rebounds, EC had 3
Other observations:
- With URI down 3 points, EC got fouled on a 3 point attempt. Clutch of him to make all 3 FTs to tie the game. We criticize the team's FT shooting periodically, but here was a very clutch making of 3 consecutive FTs. Hassan also has a clutch pair late in the game.
- With 1:40 left in the game in OT Parker had a very physical foul on TJ about half court knocking TJ to the ground. I thought this should have been flagrant, intentional or something - it was a very hard foul. Anyone else see it that way?
- Had we lost this game it would have been devastating - the woulda, coulda, shoulda stuff would be all over the board
- Winning this game was huge, just huge
- Now brings a whole new look to the Kansas game - our guys now know that they can beat Kansas
- 30 minutes before game time the Students were all in their seats at both ends of the court
- 30 minutes before the non students were not in their seats much at all - late arriving
- When I looked up at the end of the first half, and in the second half virtually every seat in the building looked full - I could hardly make out any empty seats
- Preston Murphy Jr is a star in the making as seen in the CLCF halftime game - great dribbler, passer and shooter
- Saw Jay Murphy and Tomas Murphy as they left the game. They had to be impressed by the atmosphere and the win. Wouldn't it be something if a player like Tomas Murphy decided to stay home and play for the old State University? That is what I was thinking as they walked out. I wondered what was going through their minds.
- Great Coaching effort by Dan Hurley including his substitution pattern. Like seeing him play Garrett and Watson as crucial times. Once when he put Garrett in and he had a quick turnover Hurley immediately pulled him back out. But then he had Garrett in during some of the crucial Overtime minutes
- Hurley went with TJ in the most important OT minutes

Great picture of Hassan.
I wish someone could make a GIF of the step-back 3 that Jared hit in OT, I'd watch it for days. Biggest shot of the night.

I give the athletic department a TON of credit for making the Ryan Center a first class place to watch a D-1 hoops game.
My only issue is the fact there are no replays on the nice, new LED scoreboards. I would have liked to see a couple of those awful foul calls replayed on the screen. Not sure why they can't get replays up on the fly.

I am sure it will happen. I hear the camera's are the next upgrade in the works, and that may be the hold up. We have the same boards as the Garden, I'm sure we're just waiting for the rest of the infrastructure/expertise to get into place. When you think back these last couple years..how great is it that this is the biggest complaint you can have on the Ryan Center now?Sweep The Leg wrote:Had those same thoughts. My only issue is the fact there are no replays on the nice, new LED scoreboards. I would have liked to see a couple of those awful foul calls replayed on the screen. Not sure why they can't get replays up on the fly.
Great that we're getting the national publicity this year with all of that in place right now.
Also, how great is it for college basketball in Rhode Island right now. I know a lot of people hate PC more than life itself (I still stand by my hatred of UMASS even more), but make no mistake, a good PC is good for URI. National recognition for both just helps the program, who cares what the projo says (don't worry Bill most of us still do) when it comes to the PC/URI rivalry, RI is too small of a state for a microscope to be on it and not benefit both teams.
Plus beating a very good PC team helps us a lot more.

I got my hands on some footage of the final seconds of the game in glorious HD and uploaded it on YouTube.
Enjoy.
Enjoy.

Neil, I absolutely agree with you about the foul near half court of TJ. I was up screaming for a T. it was a blatant chest bump. couldn't believe they just let that go because it was intended to be a hard bump since the player knew he had to foul and he seemed to be showing his frustration.

Well, there are still no signs on the parking lot light poles!
How much would it cost for whichever department is in charge of this,
to put it some metal numbers of letters?
Ridiculous!

So many great video clips, but this is pretty good. Not sure if the ref deserved saving, but good job, Mike.

Neil: Iffy and Butler are the 10th and 11th players and Hurley is going to use a 9-man rotation if he can get away with it. There was no one on the Neb team that Butler could cover.
Speaking of zone, Miles did URI a big favor by switching to it. it gave EC the room to maneuver. he scored all three possessions Neb was in zone.

I'm happy for everyone in the program for getting that win.
But I'm REALLY happy for TJ.

Steve and Don interviewed TJ after the game. TJ talked about being here for the ups and downs, the good and the bad. He said there were times he considered leaving, but Dan talked him out of it, talked into buying into Dan's system. He's glad he stayed now.ace wrote:I'm happy for everyone in the program for getting that win.

Watching VCU,didn't realize Mo-Allie cox is 6'6.
Our height issue isn't that much of an issue. It's college, short guys get it done in college.

If I was Miles I would have sat in a 2-3 zone in the 2nd half as well. URI didn't make a 3 pointer all night!! I think there first one came at the end of regulation or overtime.
