Speaking of UNLV, head coach Dave Rice and assistant Todd Simon had a home visit Monday in Brampton, Ontario with Jalen Poyser, a 2015 point guard from Athlete Institute in Canada.
“They spent the afternoon at AI and they are showing him that they need him,” Mark Poyser, the player’s father, told SNY.tv.
Poyser also visited UNLV for the Scarlet & Gray Showcase and is considering UNLV along with Rhode Island and St. Bonaventure.

Re: '15 CAN PG Jalen Poyser
This is something I can't pretend to know a ton about, but is there a chance that Dan's relationship with Tristan Thompson hurts us with Jalen? Like I said, I don't know the inside story or a lot of the details, but I assume Jalen must be familiar with Tristan's career also coming from Toronto and going to Findlay. Did Dan and Tristan ever repair their relationship? Just curious how that plays with Jalen.
I think it is pretty likely Jalen ends up at UNLV at this point no matter what, but I still think it is interesting what the story is there.

Just read that he verbally comitted to UNLV tonight. No surprise, I think most if us felt he was headed to the bright lights of Vegas. I wish him well.

Re: '15 CAN PG Jalen Poyser (UNLV verbal)
Just shows again how hard recruiting is. We have stroke out with all our top level recruits so far in this class. However, as we learned last year that things can quickly change and the spring can bring renewed optimism. Hopefully we preform well on the court so we can start winning more of these recruiting battles.

Interesting read about coach Dave Rice at UNLV. The article was in yesterday's edition of the Las Vegas Sun--check it out. Someone needs to send a copy to Poyser and his father.

Rice is an interesting case. He's gone 71-32 in 3 years but last year was so disappointing he was on the hot seat. Then he got an extension. Until he proves otherwise he's a great recruiter and an average coach

Per several sources, Poyser is transferring out of UNLV. I guess his Dad didn't make such a good choice for him after all. Too bad.

Played 2, sit 1, will play 2 at wherever he goes
If he comes here, in 2018-19 the first season he could play, our guards would look like:
Jeff Dowtin Junior
Christion Thompson Senior
Fatts Russell Sophomore
Jalen Poyser Redshirt Junior
Whichever guards we pick up in the class of 18
Do I have all of that right?

I remember the connection! Cordell Llewellyn, who played for URI in the early 90s, had something to do with CIA Bounce in Canada. His name came up when we were recruiting either Poyser or Dillon Brooks. Maybe somebody can help me with that. Cordell also has a son who is a 3* guard in the '18 class. http://www.verbalcommits.com/players/jaelin-llewellyn ...I wonder if we're on him?

Jalen would be a productive use of the last scholarship - getting another talented guard in the system for 2018 when we lose four very talented guards. Would make the transition smoother for sure.

Re: '15 CAN PG Jalen Poyser (UNLV Commit)
Poyser's Stats at UNLV
Freshman: 16 mpg, 5.4 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 1.1 apg, 37.4% FG, 65.6% FT, 35.6% 3FG
Sophomore: 27 mpg, 10.4 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 2.6 apg, 35.3% FG, 80.2% FT, 28.8% 3FG
Compare the 3FG Percentages to this year's team of returning players:
Akele - 40.7%
Robinson - 37.5%
Dowtin - 35.1%
Terrell - 34.6%
Mathews - 33.7%
Garrett - 31.3%
Poyser - 28.8% on 38-132
Thompson - 26.3%
Poyser shot 38.5% on 3FGs in Adidas Nations and he shot 40.5% from 3-point range in the EYBL playing for CIA Bounce the summer before his Senior Year.
Fact that Poyser shot 80.2% on FTs hitting 89-111 shows that he can shoot. Hitting 38-132 for 28.8% would be a concern, but the URI Staff would have to believe that they could work with him to improve the 3PG shooting. If they believe they can then bringing him on could be worth a shot
The hard work turned in by Robinson and the URI Staff produced great results with him going 37.5% this season on 3FGs
He was ranked #83 by Rivals. Narrowed to UNLV, Oklahoma and URI
The success of transfers Iverson and Robinson at URI could be seen as a positive by Poyser and his family. Could be a win - win for Poyser and URI.
UNLV lost 11 of their last 12 in the Mountain West and this was their worst record in the school's history going 11-21 (4-14)
They are one over on scholarships and Menzies says they will explore 1 player paying his way this year
Their incoming recruiting class is ranked 12th by 247 sports:

Re: '15 CAN PG Jalen Poyser (St. Bonaventure Transfer)
Any of them could. But unless they kill us this year, the plan worked. Some fans may disagree with the plan, and that's ok. It's an un-Belichickian plan. But I think I'm cool with it. Next year really matters for Dan and it really matters for our program, especially if it ends up mattering a lot for Dan. The goal next year is not just win the A10. Everyone wants to see EC, Jared and Jarvis (and everyone) go out having maxed out what they can do, and they've earned that.

Stan Robinson would have been fine at Indiana if he stayed. But the best situation for him wasn't necessarily there.
I don't think its mostly a case of kids getting in over their heads. Look at Jordan Sebert for Dayton the Ohio State transfer to Dayton. He obviously dominated against all competition. The level didn't matter.
