I wish I was there. I'm hoping they post a Madness recap video.
How do the season tickets look this year?
EDIT! They did post a video of the slam dunk contest!

Re: Who's Going To Madness Next Friday?
Kendall Pollard looked like he wanted to be on the Court last night. Good to have him select URI for this season kick off night.
Desmond Williams would be a nice pick up for next year. He will have a great year at CCRI and many schools are chasing him now. Need to lock him up too.

We only have one scholarship, so you can't have both.
I'd rather have Pollard.

Re: Who's Going To Madness Next Friday?
I wonder if Mike Powell will be here next year. He'll probably be 3rd on the depth chart at PG behind Matthews and Minnis. I wonder if he'd be happy from going to a 2 year starter to a guy at the end of the bench. I have no idea, but it's a possibility.rodfromcranston wrote:We only have one scholarship, so you can't have both.

Re: Who's Going To Madness Next Friday?
I know it's just a scrimmage, but Biggie seemed to shoot every time he touched the ball.
Pass first pointguards are what the Hurleys are about.
Biggie is well built, so he'll be able to body up smaller PGs.
Not to grind an old and stale subject, but I watched those guards jet all over the floor, and
realized, Billy would have looked like he was running in sand, with this bunch.
You make a good point about Powell. He has to see the writing on the wall, unless he suddenly becomes a spectacular PG.
He's got this year to show it.

for sure there will be more than one opening for next year beyond the current one.Billyboy78 wrote:I wonder if Mike Powell will be here next year. Probably will be more than one.
We'll see if Bigby goes more than one year............will depend on how he plays, and how others play as well.
I'd take Pollard but I really believe Williams is going to have an explosive season at CCRI.
He was originally offered by URI but did not get in academically. Another Preston recruit.

Players coming in have to meet the Hurley litmus test, not Baron's.
If they think Williams is a fit, then, fine.
If Bigby is here for two years, there's only one scholarship.
I'll take the four year recruit, who the staff can coach to their system from day one.

I thought Minnis looked like the best player on the floor during the scrimmage, but at the same time he looked like more of a 2 guard.

At this point we will 4 point guards on next years team-I agree that I don't think that's the way it ends up.

I wouldn't make too much of what we saw in the scrimmage. Sure we got to see the athleticism of some guys, but the coaches will be putting a lot of structure that wasn't evident.

I thought Biggie looked good. He and Powell were head to head. Biggie abused Powell, was going by him like he wasn't there. And yes, no one was playing defense, but I liked what I saw from him. As far as what Rod said about him, there is definitely truth to that. Biggie is definitely not shy about getting his shot up.Iggy1979 wrote:I wasn't there but someone else told me they were very impressed with Biggie.

Don't be surprised if Powell is better than you think. Many of you appear to want him gone today for a highschool guy which is surprising to me but hey, oh well. There is a lot of value in any player especially a PG, with 30+ min /gm as a "TRUE" freshmen.
Stay tuned

As URI fans, we all want Powell to do well. Regardless, there is the fact that the staff brought in one point guard and have a verbal from another, resulting in a freshman, sophomore, and junior at the position for 13-14. This has little to do with Mike, but I'm not sure a true freshman getting that many minutes on a bad team is that significant. And when the "high school guy" is EC Matthews, I'm pretty comfortable with that. Powell seems to be working hard, we'll see where that gets him.

Re: Who's Going To Madness Next Friday?
Have you bothered to watch video of "The high school guy"?
He's on another planet from Powell.
Powell is weak on defense. This is not a Hurley trademark.
Bob Sr, preaches defense at point from day one.
EC is supposed to be a terrific defender.
Look at both sides of the ball, not just offense.

Video? Really?
Well I guess video is the sure way to tell how good a player is huh?
I'm not commenting on neither player. I wish them all well.
However, I do remember rod saying that Kaza Keane was better than Powell too. I wonder what happened when Kaza came to visit. I heard they matched up on the court Rod. I wonder what happened?....

Re: Who's Going To Madness Next Friday?
BTW, defense is a team thing in basketball. I refuse to judge any player from that wreck of a team that was out there last year. I think the team lacked things other than talent. None of us have seen he potential of some of those guys from last year.
Powell had talent already, so with a year of experience and working with the new staff, I think he'll be fine.
I'd loved to have seen Sponge and McKoy play for this staff. WOW.
Again, stay tuned.

Re: Who's Going To Madness Next Friday?
First of all, EC Matthews is at least 5 inches bigger than Powell, probably 6 or 7. All I can tell from video is that Matthews is much more athletic than Powell and has far superior basketball skills. What else should I look for?ballallday wrote:Video? Really?

You may be right in all that you say about both these guys. I just refuse to judge any player from last years team.
As far as skillset , can we really look at a hightlight tape for that? You do know only the good moves are in the tape right?

Re: Who's Going To Madness Next Friday?
Plus, Biggie Minnis abused Powell in the scrimmage at Madness.
Just went by his time after time, like Powell's shoes were nailed to the floor.
Minnis is 6'3", built like a brick house and was still far quicker.
Oh. and the video was in game film.
Also, try reading comments from EC's coach and his AAU coach, and scouting services.
The kid is the biggest talent at URI since Lamar.

Again Rod, you too may be right. But I do remember you praising Kaza Keane and how he was 6'2. Seem in in person, 6'-0" at best.
Scouting services or your own eyes?
Oh yeah, I almost forgot about all the hype over Ray Lee.
I think I would just sit back and wait and see.

In the scrimmage, look at the defense everyone played, terrible. Look at the shot selections from the guys, terrible. Look at the turnovers, terrible. Look at the game, terrible. But you point out Powell's defense against Biggie?
Do you really hink that was a real Hurley team out there?
Maannn , I really wonder what many folks are thinking about.

You must be the person who spent his time on the old board, telling us about how great Powell was.
Never talked about any other player.
You seem to have joined this forum for one reason, again.
Funny, you recall all my posts about PGs.
Am I right?
As for Keene, lot of people at Ill. State happy he's there,

I'm new to the board, I just signed on.
Wrong guy. Also, as I stated you might be right
in all that you say, this time. I just find it amazing that
you seem too critique players by heresay and videos in todays world.
Also, I think Billy played well during his stay at Rhody. Its
still amazing how new players are mentioned and/or commit
and some folks forget how that kid gave Rhody his heart
on the court.
No worries though and no need to get bothered. Again, Matthews
and the rest may be the real deal. I just tend to reserve my opinion
until after a few games.

Re: Who's Going To Madness Next Friday?
Kind of embarrassing that we're bagging on our starting point guard, who had a representative showing as a freshman considering what he had around him. I'm sure a lot of it is that he is a "Baron guy" so he can't possibly be good. Its funny though....I thought a lot of the problem with Baron was that he got some decent players, he just couldn't coach them up.
I don't know that Powell is going to be an all-time great at URI, but I'm certainly not ready to write him off as a nineteen year old. Rod, all you've done since you first heard the name "Biggie Minnis" is scratch your head about why we were involved, then "talk him up" as a role player to come off the bench to play defense. Now his presence is proof that Powell isn't a player?
And we all have to be excited about EC Matthews. He's a huge get for URI. My hope and expectation is that Powell thrives in Hurley's system, and is able to help EC to learn it when he gets on campus next fall. There is no reason to pit all of these kids against each other right now. Hopefully they can all play. And if this team is going to emerge from the Baron-era as a legit TEAM and compete at a high level, they're going to need contributions from all of these guys and for them to all be pulling in the same direction. I don't think it does anyone any good to talk down Powell at this point.

TP the next time you agree with ANYTHING I write, will be the first time.
I didn't say Minnis was great, I said he went by Powell like he was nailed to the floor.
Where's your indignance (or embarassment, as you put it) at a new poster putting down our star recruit? Or doesn't that suit your agenda?
Who I am or am not impressed by is my opinion, and I don't need your permission to state it on this message board.
If you have a problem with my posts, and you seem to, don't read them.

Competition for minutes is a good thing. No matter what, Powell has to do a better job of taking care of the basketball. As I said before, Powell is reportedly working hard with the new staff, and it remains to be seen how that shakes out. This year is all his.

Re: Who's Going To Madness Next Friday?
Competition for minutes is a great thing. No disagreement there. And Rod, I agree with plenty you say. I just don't understand putting one of our own players down, especially a guy that has only just started his career (as opposed to a senior who underwhelmed for four years).
I don't think the guy put down Matthews, he's just saying don't forget about the guys that are actually going to be on the team this year. Someone defends one of our players, and a bunch of our fans give the guy shit about it? Criticism of players' performance is one thing, but it certainly feels like you're writing off a rising sophomore prematurely.

Re: Who's Going To Madness Next Friday?
Logic would say there was a reason why Hurley and staff put PG as first priority, to the degree that it almost became a joke.
Look back on the old board and the near majority of players offered were point guards.
As Ace said, Powell has this year to prove himself. Time alone will tell.

Re: Who's Going To Madness Next Friday?
I say, lets wait and see. Sure I hope E.C. is just that good and he just takes the league by storm, but I wouldn't be so quick to write off Powell, I'm a fan, I've said it before he showed some real clutch play for a frosh last year. Lets see what happens when he gets a chance to get 'coached up' even without he had one very good year for a newbee. Mentioning defense and referring to the scrimmage seems like grasping to me, we all know defense was a non-factor and the point of the scrimmage was to run around and dunk for the nice fans.
Go Rhody!!!

After the 90s it seems we are always looking for the next thing. I am excited over Matthews, just like I was over Lucky but I would like to be excited over what we have on the floor again. Our team has nice pieces and I hope other people aside from myself reserve the right to see something special this year. Go Powell!!

Re: Who's Going To Madness Next Friday?
Every good team needs more than one point guard. The easy thing to do after last season was leave, and Powell definitely would have had other opportunities. Obviously he's here because he wants to work hard and learn. Like EC, Powell didn't play point guard in high school, obviously that doesn't bother Hurley. He'll get better and IF he winds up a backup on a great team, what's wrong with that?

Re: Who's Going To Madness Next Friday?
Hypothetically, nothing wrong with it, if he'd accept it after starting if that's what it would come to. It worked out well for Hurley at Wagner when previous players lost minutes and starting roles to players who came in after them. If some combination of Powell/Matthews/Minnis can be on the court together, great. If not, hard to split 40 minutes between 3 guys. It's nothing personal against any of the players, just fun to play around with the roster. I find Powell and Buchanan intriguing, if only because they have the potential to be the only holdovers in the second year. That's some amazing turnaround.
