Leroy is a stud. Great midrange game. Versatile and can do a lot. Began his high school career playing for Joe Wootten (Morgan's son) at O'Connell. Now he is heading to play at Elev8 Academy in Florida (Up and coming prep school). He has played the last few years with DC Assault/Premier and should have a close connection with Coach Cox. (Committed to Rutgers while Cox was there)
Has a real different game then Gil. Leroy is more of a finesse player. He will knock down a mid range jumper, and get to the basket. He will rebound the ball and push it in transition. He is not going to make a living with his back to the basket.
If I had to compare his game to someone, I would say more along the lines of Delroy James. Smooth left handed player, who can do a variety of things.

From Jerry Carino in NJ: The move is not a total shock because Butts, a 6-foot-7 forward from Maryland who has ties to AAU power DC Assault, was recruited by since-deposed associate head coach David Cox.
.... As for Butts, who is ranked No. 126 in the Rivals Top 150, two of his finalists before his November verbal were Cincinnati and Miami. It’s worth noting that Cox ended up on Dan Hurley’s staff at Rhode Island.
"Every season, college basketball has one or two teams that rise from dormancy to relevancy, squads that make long-awaited charges at the NCAA Tournament and become really fun storylines along the way."
Not sure if 247 Sports updated their rankings lately, but it looks like Leroy dropped a little bit and is now a 3 Star, 89 Grade, #136 overall, #30 PF.
Excellent leaper and rebounder. I believe Coach Cox will be the pull we need to land Butts having had the DC Assault Connection. Interesting that Team Takeover tried to get Butts to play for them but he chose to play for DC Assault.
Another lefthander
Would represent a Solid addition to our Team.
BigShots had Butts ranked #69 in the Nation in his Class at one time.
Wow! This is huge. First big get for Cox.
I don't ever recall a player committing this early at URI.
Great job by Dan and company.
We've got the piece we need. Now anything else is gravy!
Of course Butts will drop down in the rankings, because he signed here,
just as it happened to EC.
Who cares?

His brother, Seymour, committing to nearby rival Providence. "@GoodmanESPN: Leroy Butts has committed to Rhode Island, source told ESPN.”
I've seen him listed at 6'7", 185. But one site said he was still growing. DiSano has him bigger. That's another thing about this kid. He could be 6'9" and stronger by the time he gets here.

6-8, 200 (2015) wing Leroy Butts verbals to URI, per @GoodmanESPN. Wing was primary need for Rams moving forward. Skill set fits well.
Two left. Could use a nice swingman (Mann?) and another big.
Now they can be choosy with the other scholarships, because Butts
is the one they needed.
Basketball is funny. With Terrell and Butts, in addition to Garrett, EC , and Martin,
prospective recruits are going to think, "Gee, something's going on
at URI. Maybe I want to be part of that."
Kind of a snowball effect.

Exactly, especially the New England and DC area kids. I think we can really attack these two areas for talent now that Garrett, Terrell and Butts are here. Others will follow.
This is awesome. The momentum and buzz around the program is as high as I can remember (granted I've only been following since 2007) but this is really great news.
By addressing this need now Hurley and co can really go all out on recruits they may not have otherwise had the time to fully devote.
Really excited about the direction of the program!!!
There's got to be a joke in here somewhere about Cox recruiting Butts, I'm just not funny enough to come up with it.
As a side note it's great to see URI bball getting publicity with some of the heavyweights in college bball. Goodman breaking this story and Kline giving several mentions to Rhody in recent weeks.
This is a really good signing. Leroy is high skill and high character. He has a great mid range game, and is nearly automatic from the high post and short corner. He is tall enough to be able to elevate and get his shot off in traffic, and can rebound the ball and push it in traffic. Teams that may have thought that they could sit in a 2-3 zone against us in the future, may have to think twice as Leroy can really get in the gaps in the middle and behind the zone and knock down shots. He really fills a need for us.
Will be interesting to see how we use our remaining scholarships. Will we bring in Leroy's teammate Dervelle Phillips? (Check out his dunk against Thon Maker on Youtube. Similar game to Jordan Hare. Long and athletic. Great shot blocker) Or will we grab another New England kid (Terrance Mann, Jarred Reuter). DC has some great 2016 talent, including Joe Hampton, Alani Moore, Reggie Gardner, Ako Adams.

Same here. Agree it would be great to get Phillips too - love that dunk he had against the 7 foot Thon Maker who is the top player in the Class of 2016.
Solid recruiting accomplishments the past 2 months plus our involvement with 2015 and 2016 prospects is the best in many years here at URI. Great job by Dan Hurley and staff.
