Koch: Inglese's contract won't be renewed (women's hoops)
Per the FB account for The Independent and sports editor Bill Koch: Cathy Inglese’s contract won’t be renewed as the University of Rhode Island women’s basketball coach, sources confirm. The Rams went 7-23 in 2013-14.

Good move by the school, would have liked to have seen thus move earlier but no time like the present.

Re: Koch: Inglese's Contract Not Renewed
It wasn't just the performance of this year. Her tenure was a disaster on the court from start to finish as Inglese posted a 30-115 record and was just 6-66 in Atlantic 10 play. Don't really understand what happened. I thought it was a great hire when it occurred as she had been successful at all previous stops (Vermont and BC). She was given enough time to show some positive momentum but couldn't. I hope she can find more success in her next job.

Yeah, I'm not sure anyone can quite figure out how she failed so miserably here at Rhode Island after high levels of success (great success) at her previous schools.

Why was she unable to get talent to Kingston when she was able to do so at Vermont and BC?
The A-10 is actually a decent women's league so that should not be the problem with recruiting. It sent three teams to the NCAA (Fordham, St. Joe's, and Dayton). SBU and Fordham were recent A-10 champs. Why can't Rhody women's basketball at least achieve competitive status in the league?

Many years ago I taught with Kathy when she was a phys. ed teacher in Glastonbury Ct. Great person, but there was no improvement in the time she was at Kingston. When does Geno's contract expire?

This will be an interesting hire. Perhaps Thorr can do no worse than going after a very, very hungry and motivated younger coach who has local ties and has an eye on a much, much, much bigger picture of achieving greatness.

Misto is a great coach and strives to keep her athletes on a good path. As a WHS grad I was so mad when she resigned but I understood why. The only obstacle with hiring her is who will be on her staff to help out recruiting and so on.

Re: Koch: Inglese's Contract Not Renewed
There are always ways to get good recruiters who are young and aggressive, who have are also up-and-comers. Also, it's feasible to latch onto a coach with college bench-experience. Surround Misto -- or someone like her -- with the right people, and URI's women's program has a chance to be on the upswing.

No surprise, given the record body of work....someone off the coaching tree of Brian Giorgis of Marist College, where the womens program is a bigger deal than their men's......

Re: Koch: Inglese's Contract Not Renewed
I don't get why the women's program has been such a mess since Linda Ziemke's latter
days?
The women's program used to be pretty good, when Michele Washington was around and
at other times through the years. It's been pretty moribund for the last 16 years or so.
Just a quagmire of a program.
I've seen Cathy Inglese at several functions and she seems like a sincere person, and seemed to say
the right things.
I've also seen her team several times, and while they played hard, the lack of talent was pretty obvious.
It's mind boggling how such a successful coach at her two prior stops, failed to have
any positive impact at URI.

This whole thing is getting a little scary. The Ryan center, great new SADC,great location, scholarships and no good players want to go there ? Or the coaches can't recruit them? There is one prominent booster that has been screaming at me (for years) ,it is not the kids,it is the coaches !! Am inclined to agree.

Re: Koch: Inglese's Contract Not Renewed
I saw this in the football thread and it drove me nuts there too. Can we please stop advocating for the university to hire RI high school coaches for head coaching positions? They're not qualified for the position. They've never had experience coaching in colleges, they don't have experience recruiting on a national level, they're simply not qualified, no matter how well they represented your home town or how much you liked playing for them when they coached you. And saying, "well just put the right support staff around them and they'll be fine"? Guess what. Nobody that can help them on a college level is going to want to take marching orders from a high school coach, because they're more qualified for being the head coach than RI high school coach X. If Coach Misto, or any other high school coach gets even a sniff at a URI coaching position, it should be as a recruiting assistant that can help with in state recruiting, though frankly that might even be a waste of a coaching spot with the lack of talent coming from the state.

My point was that the woman has principles and is driven to do things in a particular way, a team-oriented way, all the while achieving results on the floor with limited resources.
I agree, go after someone who has been an assistant at the feet of coaches at UConn, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Baylor, NC State, etc.,
Sometimes, it doesn't have to be complicated.

i have family up at UNH and Maureen Magarity is someone who i've seen in person (since they trashed uri at the Ryan Ctr a few years ago). she took over a program that was in similar shape to uri four years ago and has built them into a 19-game winner. rising star, head coaching experience, you know she can recruit nationally (Army), and a member of the Giorgis coaching tree (Marist). might be worth a look

This might be crazy talk, but how about Bob Walsh as a replacement?
I don't know if he'd want to switch to the women's game, but he's a terrific coach and D-I is D-I. He can recruit with the best of them and who knows, he could end up doing what Geno did at UConn in the mid-80s.

UCOnn is the top program in the country ... they're down the road so to speak...Call Geno and ask for a recommendation. It's simple.
If that doesn't work, hire Skinner.

In the recruiting forum Rod mentioned that Terance Mann's mother, Daynia La-Force, interviewed for the head coach's position. She's spent the last eight seasons as the head coach at Northeastern. Here's her bio from their site: http://gonu.com/coaches.aspx?rc=440&path=wbball

Supposed to be an announcement this week, so I was told.
If it's La-Force, hopefully Terrance comes with her, as in he commits in November, since he's a '15. I would think he'd visit this summer?
If he does, there's our SG/wing of the future. Then we'll need just a post grad for this season.

Do you guys think this will help us with Terrance? Honestly, I'm not sure if my mom being the HC somewhere would persuade me to go to school there. After HS I wanted to get away.

Re: Koch: Inglese's Contract Not Renewed
Hearing tomorrow could be the announcement.
Having LaForce here can't hurt. If she's a typical basketball coach,
she's not been spending a lot of time with her son, anyway.
Plus, he's been away in NH this year.
Now come Gerbil Jim Donaldson's anti-URI sniping articles.

Outstanding work by Rod to have had some insight and knowledge of this as a future possibility.
As for Mann's mother being the HC for the Women's Team having a possible impact on Mann maybe choosing URI as his school?
Everyone is different - sure some want to get away from home in picking a college...................
but the advantages are there if he want's them.
Able to play in front of his Mom for at least every Home game plus able to play in front of Mom against close by competition including UMASS, PC, Fordham, etc.
Many kids are very close to their mother -
I like this hire very much.
I always thought we held on to our current Coach for too long.
Welcome to a new era - good job by Thorr in changing Coaches - I hope this is the hire.

You're not going to get Geno Auriemma.
This is a tough job, that needs the AD to figure out
what's wrong and why it's hasn't worked in almost 16 years.
