Sure you are probably right, probably just hoping, but I really really liked this kid, the military school he went to and his family's involvement. This kid will be a winner!!TruePoint wrote:He signed a LOI in the fall. Re: '14 Lithuania PF/C Rokas Gustys (Offer)
Funny, I talked to Dan after Foreman declared for Rutgers.
He said if he knew how good Hassan was, he would never have recruited Foreman.
Problem with that is, Foreman has a perimeter game, and Martin doesn't.
Foreman could be a genuine 3.
Makes you wonder, bad talent evaluation or sour grapes?

Hass needs some time. He took very few outside shots but he did make some when they counted. He seems like a really smart player. He doesn't force what he isn't comfortable with. If we can get to a point where guys can experiment in game, then they can develop their confidence on things they want to do.

Re: '14 Lithuania PF/C Rokas Gustys (Offer)
Towards the end of the season, he actually had a nice looking baseline jumper from 12-15 feet. I'm sure he's working on that and his handle. He definitely has the shot blocking and dunking down. (This is about Hassan, if anybody is wondering.)

Remember ARD's development of his outside shot by his senior year. He went from no outside shot to a very good 15-18 ft shot as a senior. Hass is much further along as a frosh than ARD was as far as their outside shots. I agree with the smart player comment, he is a very intelligent player, great basketball IQ. He is going to be so fun to watch.

After watching Gustys play two games, I really was not impressed. I know what the commentators were saying but my eyes told me that he is too slow to play at URI and not athletic at all. I refrained from posting my thoughts sooner because I did not want to have any negative postings about our future player. We can and we will do better than Gustys. Go Hurley!

It looks like Hare's the man. Too bad some of these recruits have to prolong their decisions. No one waits forever.

Re: '14 Lithuania PF/C Rokas Gustys (Offer)
I liked his game and think he will have a solid college career. Many tournament teams have a big like Gustys who can hold his position in the paint, pass, and rebound. That being said there is not really major playing time available for Hare, Gustys, Watson, Biruta and Martin. Iffy would have had trouble getting off the bench if we had got him (and still may if he does not improve). Think he could have played a lot once Biruta graduates and would still keep the offer open and just grab one more small instead of two and play Martin plenty of his minutes at the three but that is why Dan makes the big bucks. It is up to him what style he wants to play and to judge who can play and who can't.

Gustys,Cooke, Terrell. After all the excitement in the last week over this group, the most likely outcome is we get not one of them. Ouch!

The fact that it appears that he's deciding between Tulane, UAB and Hofstra maybe should tell you that perhaps this board overrated Gustys from the beginning. All 3 of those schools are in 1-bid leagues. Conference USA is not what it used to be, nor is the CAA.

I said were were not getting any of the four,
Terrell, Cooke, Owens or Gustys.
We can't even bring in decent jucos.
The only player this board overrates is Jordan Hare.

If Rokas was good he would have better offers. If he really was this force on okafor, maybe 1 of the 15 ACC schools would grab him, in fact I know miami lost 1 of their 2 bigs and are sorta desperate for a big to bring in and they wouldn't sniff Rokas.

If Doug McDermott was any good, then why didn't anyone but
Northern Iowa recruit him?
If Stephan Curry was any good, why did only Davidson recruit him?
If Bryce Cotton was any good, why was he waiting in August to go
juco, because nobody recruited him?
Why was Dennis Rodman at an NAIA school?
Why didn't Jimmy Baron have a single college offer?
How many schools were chasing Tyson Wheeler?

Again, I was told a month ago, that Gustys coming here likely would not
happen. That a decision on Hare wouldn't be made known until Gustys
decided one way or another.
Those in the ether will say he wasn't good enough and we didn't want him.
To me, that's not true, and just sour grapes.

Re: '14 Lithuania PF/C Rokas Gustys (Offer)
Rod, there are always guys that fall through the cracks. The likelihood that Gustys is falling through the cracks and every school in a BCS level conference missed him is slim, however.
Guys that end up being big time college basketball players don't choose Tulane. Tulane's gone I believe over 20 years since being in the tournament. And I can't even remember them being on the bubble in that time frame. They play in a tiny arena in a lousy conference that gets 1 team in the tournament a year. Yeah, it's possible that Gustys values academics. Certainly nothing wrong with that. However, there are plenty of good academic schools in the major conferences. Where was Northwestern during his recruitment? Or Vanderbilt? Stanford? None of them are exactly powerhouse programs. But not a sniff from any of them.
And if he chooses UAB or Hofstra then I honestly won't know what to say.

Well, we've not been to an NCAA since 1999.
Who are we to look down our noses at any other program?
Speaking of Kaza Keene, who CFL is courting, anyone have a clue where
Mike Powell is going?

Powell may have to go the non D1 route if he wants to play again. Very few D1 programs would waste a scholarship on a non-star player sitting out a year for just one season of eligibility.

Really makes you wonder what went into Powell's decision. Some of this eligibility/scholarship situation seems to be a given. I really hope for the sake of their relationship going forward that Sr. didn't talk him into transferring out.

27% shooters usually aren't going to get much attention.
His quitting was a mistake for him, as he would have played plenty
this year given the injuries to Minnis.

True, but looking at it from the program perspective, if he had stayed it would have meant one less scholarship to offer next season, he would have most likely have remained on the team for his senior year.
Of course, right now we still have 2 open. I still think they will be filled within the next 2 weeks.

As long as those two remaining aren't filled by
shopping at the thrift store.
One might be Charles Cooke, a transfer from JMU, so
hopefully the last one will be someone who can help on
offense.
Can't see then taking both Cooke and Ingraham.

You're right about that, Rod. No more Butlers, please.

To be fair, the board loved the Butler signing last year so is it lack of faith in development/evaluation?rambone 78 wrote:You're right about that, Rod. No more Butlers, please.

Re: '14 Lithuania PF/C Rokas Gustys (Offer)
I've been told that Powell's decision to leave the program was largely driven by his father.
Also, I sit in the 300's at the Ryan Center and would run into Powell up there from time to time at games. Definitely an awkward situation, but a very nice kid when I spoke to him. Obviously would like to see him wind up somewhere so how it ended for him at URI wouldn't be the end of his collegiate career.

Ends up at a bottom-feeding CAA team. I guess that ends the Hare-Gustys debate.
