Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
The game changed last year when they changed the rules on fouls; made it even more of a guards' game than it already was. You need guards who can defend and guards who can break their opponent down off the dribble. It's why Hurley is trying to add more guards, even one of them a PG. Like you can't have too much pitching in baseball, you now can't have too many guards in basketball.

Well, we suffered most when Gil and Hassan got into foul troubles, without
significant backups. Those were the games we got swamped in.
Watson will help, but I sure hope Gustys finally decides on Kingston, RI.

Only live recruiting period of the spring starts now. Will be interesting to see where the staff shows up

It's not a binary choice but, if it was, you get your ass to NH. Bring sleeping bags and tents if you need to. Jared Terrell>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Cooke for many reasons.Billyboy78 wrote:Do they go to New Hampshire or to Oregon?Iggy1979 wrote:Only live recruiting period of the spring starts now. I'll take both, though.

Terrell, Cooke or a top 100 '15 SG.
What's your preference? (if we can indeed get one of the three)

Re: Terrell, Cooke or a top 100 '15 SG.
Terrell...................Top 100 SG....Cooke.
Terrell steps in and plays in about five months. Plus, he is NE AAU. Plus, he is NE prep. Those might help the 2015 class, which is important.
I'm not turning down Cooke but transfers are never as great in practice as on paper. Guy can play and Rhody needs shooting. But, give the me the four year guy.

I'd go Terrell, because he could play next year, Cooke, because he's a known quantity
and a great fit. then if you don't land either, the 2015 unknown.

They will be at games all day. They aren't specifically there just for that game. At 10 they may be at a 17U game.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
A couple of weeks ago we were discussing what fifth-year senior URI should take. Now we're talking about Cooke and Terrell. One of the craziest recruiting years I can remember. And this is why Hurley is patient. He'd be kicking himself if he had used a scholarship on someone like Spreewell or Coleman. Scholarships are gold!

Someone has to be 13. It's ok to use it on a project.
2 (3) open spots at this time of the year can be cause for worry or a luxury. At the moment, it's looking like a good thing.

Also, good to know that URI still attempts to make a California connection, regardless if it was Preston Murphy flying cross-country X-amount of times, racking-up the frequent-flyer miles.

I'm hearing from a couple of decent sources, that we may
not sign any of these four.
Wouldn't that be a kick in the pants.
Hope it's not true, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Certainly a non-zero chance that we don't sign any of Gustys, Terrell, Cooke, or Owens. I think our best odds are certainly with Gustys, but we'll have to see. If we get two of the four, it would be remarkable.
Words cannot describe the excitement if we were to sign Terrell, somehow someway. If he really likes Dan Hurley, here's hoping that Dan is able to meet up with him and sell him on the exciting times ahead at URI, where Terrell could be an immediate star.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
It's interesting to me that the "sources" out there seemed to have broken into two camps: the Murphy camp, and the Murray-Carr camp.rodfromcranston wrote:I'm hearing from a couple of decent sources, that we may

Murphy told someone that Terrell isn't going to URI.
For instance, the Murphy camp will tell you URI has no chance with Gustys (because he's a Murray recruit). And they'll tell you that Terrell isn't coming to URI (because Preston isn't there.)
The Murray-Carr camp will tell you that Murphy got too much credit as a recruiter and love dropping the name of Daniel West.
I have no idea how this is going to work out, but I would advise that if someone is telling you something, consider their agenda ....

Interesting Thought Iggy - let's see how this all plays out in the next week but I would think that at the end of the day the head coach should be the biggest factor.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
I've also heard more on the friction between Carr and Murphy, as
a cause of Murphy leaving.
Carr has already tried to horn in on the Watson signing.
I know that's a load of baloney.
Yes, the Murphy camp is where the "Gustys won't likely happen" came from.
Daniel West was before Carr and Murray, so they need to shut up.
I have one thing to say to those two...EC MATHEWS!
Produce a comparable talent, and then I'll buy what they're selling.
And yes, DAN needs to step up himself. This is a crucial time.
As constituted today, this roster is no better than last year's.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
True, but there are a lot of things that can be chalked up to human nature that leave a bit to be desired. But you kind of switched the meaning of what I said. If someone connected to Murphy says that URI isn't going to get Terrell, that shouldn't make Preston the target of anyone's anger. It's the same way as someone who is not Murray or Carr bringing up West. That reflects on that person, not the coaches, so it doesn't matter how long they've been there. I certainly know my limitations in objectivity and when information can be shared. We all have biases and sources, it's just helpful to know them when considering information. That's all.rodfromcranston wrote:"And getting mad at a person or taking sides because an associate of that person says something you don't like?"

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
What did we win 14 last year? Something like that. Can't say that I'm in any of these camps.
Top 100 teams give or take make post season tournaments. Let's say they have 12-15 guys each team. 1200-1500 players. There are players out there.
PM is one of our own but he didn't give us success from the clipboard.
It's occurred to me that we won't get any of these 4 guys. Makes the board fun to speculate.
We will survive because that's what we've been doing forever now. Somebody on the roster, the coaching staff, somebody somewhere has to step up and be special. Buck stops here kind of guy(s).

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
I'm a big Jarvis Garrett fan, but if our recruiting class this year is Garrett and Watson and a couple of backup plans, it would be a very disappointing class, especially when there were 4 and maybe 5 scholarships available.
