Honestly, Dan Hurley's gotta REALLY be questioning a lot about this little rebuilding program that's turned into a massive, slow undertaking here at Rhode Island.

I feel that way too. Is BC that much better of a situation? I know they are ACC and recruiting will be easier and he is probably getting a raise...but I thought we had a good thing going and he would stay and watch the team he built.twisted3829 wrote:i think most people are upset by it because it was 2 weeks ago he was named to associate head coach

I thought he would have stayed longer before he left. There was no question that he was leaving the program but to do it this early is a blow.

This really sucks but there is no time to mourn. We must keep evolving!
I hope that we can put a solid season together. That will put us back on the map and attract some solid players as well as coaches

I agree. To lose Bobby last year and Preston this year has got to be taking a toll on him. With everyhing else (player losses and APR issues) thrown in, it just adds to the difficulties he has had to endure in just two short years here.ATPTourFan wrote:Honestly, Dan Hurley's gotta REALLY be questioning a lot about this little rebuilding project that's turned into a massive, slow undertaking here at Rhode Island.

Re: Preston Murphy to Join BC staff as Assistant Coach
I'm being told Preston will be making 260K at BC, and
that the Associate Head Coach deal here, came with no pay raise.
Apparently he wanted some assurance that he'd be head coach in waiting,
and didn't get that.
Hey, I don't blame him.
Now, let's see how Hurley and Thorr react, and what's their answer to losing
a key component of a thus far unsuccessful rebuilding project at URI.
Hurley hasn't endured anything near what Ed Cooley has at PC, and Cooley keeps
his eye on the prize and moves forward.
Hurley needs to show is he is who we thought he was, before we feel sorry for him.

There has to be a plan in place or developing in order to fill that spot. Either an ex player, current assistant coach, or a head coach that was recently cut loose.

Yeah but that happened because he was being courted for jobs and it was an attempt to keep him happy. It isn't like we offered him more money out if pure kindness and he sneakily went around looking another job anyways. The two things are connected in such a way that it makes no sense for that to be the reason you're mad.twisted3829 wrote:i think most people are upset by it because it was 2 weeks ago he was named to associate head coach

Re: Preston Murphy to Join BC staff as Assistant Coach
half of what he will be making at BC....we could not give him a raise, we could not give him a multi-year contract, we could not guarantee him the HC job was his if/when DH leaves. in lieu of that how could he turn down a chance to greatly improve the quality of life for his family. as they say, dont hate the player hate the game.rhodyfan3 wrote:What was Preston making here? that said, Jarvis, EC and Hassan still leave me plenty excited for next year. I still have confidence in DH, he needs to nail this replacement hire though, and someone who can hit the ground running with recruits is a must.

Congrats to Preston, great move up and a great opportunity. Everyone needs to realize college sports is a business and a livelihood for these men, you can't fault Preston for taking a higher paying job at a higher level. This isn't great news for URI in the near term, but long term it's hopefully going to benefit us.

Re: Preston Murphy to Join BC staff as Assistant Coach
If Hurley can't overcome the loss of an assistant then he had no chance of succeeding. I'm not minimizing the loss of Preston, but assistant coaches leave all the time. Look at Pat Skerry's resume -- it's pretty typical.ATPTourFan wrote:Honestly, Dan Hurley's gotta REALLY be questioning a lot about this little rebuilding program that's turned into a massive, slow undertaking here at Rhode Island.
Dan needs to go out and find another aggressive, well-connected recruiter. There are other Preston Murphys.

I'm pissed that he's leaving, but not pissed at him. It's a great opportunity and a very large pay raise. The only thing I question is someone posting that he wanted assurances of the HC job here. I don't think BC put that into his contract.

heaps of mediocrity in between the nicer times.
67. if the money was there with BC, why wouldn't he go and take his
chances on being a head coach, at a future time?

We have to be the most egg-shell-psyche'd fan base of all time. Some of us react to Rhody sports news like how beaten dogs react to new people. Yes, I love Preston too and it sucks he has to move on, but (1) that is how college basketball works so we should be more understanding of it by now and (2) this is how life works so we should be a little better at not handling it like children when things don't go our way. Time for the program to nut the fuck up and figure out how to replace Coach Murphy and his studly recruiting. Hopefully the fans will do the same thing.

Re: Preston Murphy to Join BC staff as Assistant Coach
I had thought Dan got raises for his staff last year when his contract was adjusted during the Rutgers flirtation.
If URI wants to succeed, it will have to spend more. We are falling further behind on several levels. Dan's salary is now low even by A-10 standards let alone those in power conferences or the new Catholic Big East. PC's Cooley was reported to make in excess of 1m/year and I have seen some speculate that it may be closer to 2m. Our assistants are grossly underpaid and we have lost two in recent years to PC and BC. Comparable schools are building expensive hoops only practice facilities. URI is not doing enough to keep up. Rhody fans tend to compare the present situation in Kingston to what it was years ago instead of comparing it to other schools in the now.

It appears now that the Projo removed that $79k number from their story. Did anybody else see it earlier? Maybe it wasn't accurate, but either way I think it's safe to say the raise is hefty.

TP, for a few of us, Preston leaving is a personal loss.
He's not some guy who we see on TV. He's a real person,
who likes Mother of Dragons, and is made of flesh and blood.
I felt the same when Jim Harrick left.
Someone you came to know outside the lines, not just as a coach of
you favorite school.
It's not so cut and dried as "yeah, buck up, you wusses!, So you lost
a coach. It's business!"

It would not surprise me if the Projo used dated info from a previous season BEFORE Preston was the #1 assistant and got his promotion to associate head coach. My guess is that they later realized this and took the number out.

This is just so deflating. It is very difficult to be a URI basketball fan these days when things like this (along with other coaches and players leaving, not signing players when it appeared they would, players not keeping up with academics, injuries, etc...) happen.

I get that Rod. On a personal level it definitely sucks to see him go. But as far as what it says about the state of the program, I think it says we need an assistant coach and we need to hit a home run with the hire because we lost a great one. But beyond that, coaches leave for other jobs all the time. It's work for them. That is what people do.rodfromcranston wrote:TP, for a few of us, Preston leaving is a personal loss.

I was thinking cost of living is double in Boston also.
All we need is an Asst that can make things happen and Dan Hurley to be what we thought he was.
Dan is a young fiery coach, this should just motivate him and the team.
Fact remains that we are entering this next season with the best team we have had in a long time. Since maybe Delroy's junior year?
I have hoped Tyson Wheeler would find his way to our staff someday but I don't know his coaching/recruiter rep. I would bet against him.
I would prefer a coach with solid Phila up through NYC ties.

I agree it would be great to get someone with NY/NJ/Philly ties.
I wonder if TJ Sorrentine would apply. Loved him as a player and have been impressed with his "recruiting" at Brown.
