Re: Rumor
Wow! THAT'S a killer if it happens.
They just brought Scott Spinelli on their staff, who's supposed to be a recruiting wiz.
Hope Thorr and Dooley get pro active here.
Lose Preston and lose most of our future recruits.
BC has ACC football dollars, and can top anything moneywise that
URI can offer.

Re: Rumor
I just dont get why he would get promoted tweet a recruit he landed welcome to the program and then leave the next day. Unless he is getting alot of money from BC. It sucks because he made RI his home.

Re: Rumor
Word was that BC was going to make a big push for high profile assistants. They just hired Spinelli from Maryland to be the head assistant. Preston would have a lesser title but the money may be better. Timing of this news right after Garrett signing seems to make sense given how these things work. Probably had an agreement with Hurley to wait until the LOI was received. Sucks for Garrett as Preston is one of the reasons he signed. Very dispapointing if true considering URI just gave him a new title and likely more money.

Re: Rumor: Preston Talking to BC about joining Christian' St
This stuff happens and maybe Preston sees it as a faster way to the big chair, but I just hate Boston College so much and I don't want to have to root for him to fail. I already feel bad about rooting for Jim Christian to fail. I'm glad they at least waited til after NSD to let this get out and that URI has stepped up to try to keep him by promoting him to Assoc HC.

BC must have really upped the pay for its staff if they can hire Spinelli away from Maryland as 1st asst and Murphy (1st asst at URI) as 2nd asst.

uggggh! i heard from a source that their may be a bump in the Rhode coming, i assume this is what they meant.
dont understand the move, unless the money is just so disparate...he is almost certain to be the next HC at URI if he just waits his turn.

If Murphy leaves, Hurley really has to get a big time recruiting assistant. No one else on the current staff seems ready to fill the void.

Love Preston to death. No assistant coach (ok associate) leaving ever killed a program

Always. We've had bigger hits than this in the past.
Kraft's heart attack, Penders and Harrick leaving.
Still, I don't recall and assistant coach ever having the
overall impact on the program that Preston had.
Remember, Preston wasn't really a Hurley guy in the beginning.

For him it might work out better to leave and then return as HC

Re: Rumor: Preston Talking to BC about joining Christian' St
That's all true and Preston has done an incredible job. Losing him at just about any point up to now would have put us even further behind than we are. But the timing if this, if it has to happen, couldn't be much better. Plenty of time for the coaches to work on relationships that will pay off in the fall.rodfromcranston wrote:Always. This would be the 2nd year in a row at Rhody that Dan Hurley would have lost his top assitant - 2013 Bobby Hurley and 2014 Preston Murphy. Losses like these really slow down any momentum and can actually set you back.

Re: Rumor: Preston Talking to BC about joining Christian' St
Personally, this makes me sad. I really liked Preston, from the first time I met him
seemingly another lifetime ago.
Just a really good guy who'll be sorely missed.
We lost Bobby and now Preston. You don't just replace guys like that.
It also means all the relationships Preston formed with recruits for the future,
are pretty much lost. The Michigan pipleine will die without him.
Don't think so? Look at the results of the rest of the staff. So far, crickets.

I agree with you about Bobby and agree that Preston is a huge loss. Many here will disagree.RF1 wrote:This would be the 2nd year in a row at Rhody that hurley would have lost his top assitant - 2013 Bobby Hurely and 2014 Preston Murphy. As far as having plenty of time to make relationships by September, much of the work for the '15 class has already been started, mostly, I would guess, by Preston....forget that now.

agrree with RJ, loyalty has to be a two way street here....if he leaves I would say seyonara. I am a huge PMurph fan from his playing days to now, huge advocate of Dan retaining him, but this one will sting if true and I wouldn't be so quick to forgive. Its freakin BC....if you tell me they offered to triple his salary consider all of the above.

Preston isn't just any guy. He's a link with our last piece of greatness.
He's a Ram. He's one of ours. Period.
Damned right he'd be welcomed at some future point by 99% of Rhody
followers.

If I were Jarvis Garrett, I would feel very deceived by the timing of this news, especially if this had been kept quiet for however long it's been in the works.

Re: Rumor: Preston Talking to BC about joining Christian' St
BC stinks and it sounds like he's making a lateral move (at best), so this is clearly all about the money. It's not as if he's leaving to join Izzo's staff at Michigan State, in which case I would congratulate him on the great opportunity. On the surface, it really seemed like Preston bought into Hurley's plan and the fact that he's leaving right as we're on the cusp of taking the program to a new level, it's extremely disappointing to say the least. I've always been a big fan of Preston, but good riddance. Enjoy another 8-win season in Chestnut Hill.

It's ACC-BCS money and presteige.
Preston has BC roots, too.
Conference wise, money wise and resume wise, it's the smart move.

Rod,
I agree with you about certain people and how they appeal because of the fact they hold sentimental value. That said, how can you ever fully trust someone to buy in (even as a head coach) when they could accept a demotion (in title) to a lower-level BCS school? I realize that in the world of college basketball, it's too idealistic to believe that our coaches are going to last forever and coach until they die. I'm not trying to give you a hard time, truly interested in hearing your opinion ... (please don't yell at me) lol

From a player personal standpoint, this is going to crush the program. Not to mention Preston is a URI guy so if we can't keep him, who can we keep?

Re: Rumor: Preston Talking to BC about joining Christian' St
Fly, maybe Preston loved his time in Boston? He was there for years.
More urban, more things to do.
Coupled with a gigantic raise in pay, maybe that did the trick?
Which of us wouldn't make a career move to a familiar place for
a huge, maybe double what we were making, raise?
