Re: NY Times article on Hurley/Murray
Seth Berkman has been working on this for a few months. I'm sure he was disappointed that he couldn't interview Dan or Luke in Kingston or Brooklyn for this piece.

I'm not sure whom Luke has been instrumental in recruiting at URI. But, this is his first year. Let's see who signs this spring and fall.

Would be Luke if we land Gustys. I think Luke has been primarily focused on future classes, though. Considering when he came on board, that makes sense. He came with the expectation that he'd be a strong recruiter, and I wouldn't doubt that just because he hasn't brought anyone in yet. Recruiting is a relationship-based endeavor so you have to allow some time to build relationships.

On vacation this week in Mexico. At the resort we're staying in, they do an abridged nytimes and give it to you at breakfast. I went straight to the back page for the sports, and there was a piece on Rhody! So random and nice.
Time to look to the future, can't wait to see how the team shapes up for next year.

Re: NY Times article on Hurley/Murray
It is good for the program to get some pub in the NY Times. But lets not kid ourselves. The article calls Hurley and Murray the leaders of the staff, That is laughable as Preston Murphy is not even mentioned in the article and is responsible for bringing in amongst others the A10 co-rookie of the year and hopefully a stud point guard in Jarvis for next year. Best decision Hurley made was to keep Preston on board for his the staff .

I thought the same thing, Rhody Blue.
Preston is clearly the MVP on the staff.
To me, keeping him was THE best decision Hurley
has made, with the possible exception of not
leaving for Rutgers.

The writer said that Billy Baron left "before this season."

It's not the Times of yesteryear, that's for sure…BUT, the exposure is good, the syndication is good wherever it gets picked-up….

Re: NY Times article on Hurley/Murray
I think you guys are looking at the article as a sports piece. It wasn't. It was a human interest piece that happened to have a sports angle, and the target audience is different from the average sports fan. Considering the article's perspective, none of the criticisms leveled here should be surprising. (Not that they aren't legit)

Right, more of a piece about two coaches with very famous fathers.

Re: NY Times article on Hurley/Murray
This was good exposure for URI but, If I did not read this forum and the recruiting section, I would think that Luke was the Head Assistant or the Associate Head Coach. The article referred to him and Coach Hurley as the leaders of the Staff. Obviously Coach Hurley leads this team but the facts state that Murphy is the Lead Assistant.

Though about starting a thread that said, "Hurley might leave", but decided that those of us "Graybeards" might not survive until we opened the thread. In any event, it is about Hurley so I decided to put it in the Hurley family thread.

Re: NY Times article on Hurley/Murray
It will be interesting to see which Hurley moves on first.
Hopefully it's Bobby. Dan's got a lot of work to do here, and it's going to take a while. Of course I would love to see him here for a long time, just like Shaka will be at VCU.
And be just as successful as Smart is too.

Re: NY Times article on Hurley/Murray
I know coaching can keep you bouncing around, but no way he's moving his family for the fourth time in four years. Buffalo is not a great coaching gig right now, but they're doing some good things at that school in general with their sports. Not having McCrea next year will be tough and a chance to show what kind of coach he is (my take, a pretty good one, which is hardly surprising).

Don't get much more solid than that. Should squelch the rumors for the short term and the long term. Interesting that he even states he is not doing this again.TruePoint wrote:That's a solid tweet

Yeah, I like it, he's going to stick around and try to build something special for UB and he's not putting his family through another upheaval. Good man Bobby Hurley.ramster wrote:Don't get much more solid than that. Should squelch the rumors for the short term and the long term. Re: NY Times article on Hurley/Murray
I think the shine has come off a bit for Danny. Two losing seasons will do that for you. Bobby has always been the bigger name and just came off one of the most successful seasons ever (not saying much) at Buffalo. He is likely the hotter Hurley prospect right now. If Danny has a good season next year and Bobby stumbles, it flips. It is all about what have you done lately.Billyboy78 wrote:Does this mean that Bobby is now a hotter coaching prospect than Dan?

"Hotness" with regard to coaches usually comes just from some guy on the internet throwing crap at the wall. Now, if schools are actually engaging a coach, that should count towards one's hotness. I don't read much into this stuff.

Re: NY Times article on Hurley/Murray
I think Bobby is the hotter coaching prospect right this second, but it's also a matter of degree. Like, if Duke had a coaching vacancy, neither one of them is getting a sniff. If an A-10 team had an opening, then Bobby might be a candidate, depending on his connections to the program hiring. I don't think Danny could jump to a high major or power conference right now, but he's better positioned to do that than Bobby, who's coaching a low conference team.RF1 wrote:I think the shine has come off a bit for Danny. My prediction is that Bobby Hurley's next job will be at Duke taking over for Coach K.

I love Bobby, but his job gets a lot tougher next year without McCrea. Not many new coaches inherit their conference's player of the year.

Amaker bombed at a BCS school when he got canned by Michigan.
He should stay put or take a mid major job.

I though Jim Calhoun was?
Who'd want that BC job, anyway?
Baron? Jerry D? Gordie Chiesa?

Re: NY Times article on Hurley/Murray
BC is a bad job. They play in a horrible arena and it's a terrible place to recruit. I'd hold out for something better if I were Amaker. Wake Forest just fired their coach. That's 10 times the job that the BC job is.

Re: NY Times article on Hurley/Murray
Maybe he's thinking he likes money? He's a Boston guy and he isn't working, and he would only be coaching for a couple years win, lose or draw. I think the BC job is terrible, but even I can't think of a reason why Calhoun wouldn't take it if his health would allow him to coach.rambone 78 wrote:Calhoun has interest in this? I was thinking more along the lines of, how does he think BC would take him?
You're right about his reasons for wanting the job, just don't think BC wants him.
