Game #9: @ Providence College - PreGame
Not to get ahead of ourselves, but Bryce Cotton got hurt in the first half of today's game and will not return. Possibly could affect his status against us on Thursday?

Could be the lowest combined active scholarship players total in the modern history of this rivalry.

Re: PC game
Batts got 32 points. We don't have an answer for him.
Henton and Fortune are good players.
They have a thin roster, but they have balance, inside, mid range
and long range, at least when Cotton is playing.
Tough game. We need to get them in foul trouble to get to
the walkons.

I'll be shocked if at least two of the three out of Brooks, Aaman and Hare don't have 4 fouls or foul out.

I'm not a vegas oddsmaker.
But i did stay @ a holiday inn last nite...
So, i predict the line will be +3.
I feel like doing a poll to see who thinks higher, who thinks lower.
But it probly isn't a poll-worthy question.
So just post your thoughts if you're so inclined.
This is definitely do-able!

Don't know if any of you have seen it yet, but Cox's Vin Parise put together a very nice 30 minute program on the URI-PC Rivalry.
It includes some great footage and commentary from the head coaches, ADs, former players, and media.
Here is a preview from Cox Sports Online

Re: Game #9: @ Providence College
Anybody see how SOFT PC's out of conference schedule is? Unreal? These guys have and will play mostly cupcake teams in the out of conference portion of their schedule. These guys are not a tough 6-2 team. I expect this game to close.
So two PC fans walk into a bar. Ouch!
What do you get when Jordan Hare stuffs Goldsbrough and Bancroft into the PC Friar? A double stuffed Oreo.
Why did PC choose a Friar to be their mascot? Convicts wouldn't work because Syracuse wears orange.
Why did PC "really" choose a Friar to be their mascot? No one can see what's happening under the robe.
Why are Big East schools leaving the conference? The Friar registered as a sex offender.
Why is the PC Friar "really" at the basketball games? He likes to play with balls.

Dunn may be available for PC. I don't think we need to worry about matchups. PC is a better team than us. So are most of the teams on our schedule...and we're in every single one of them. I expect a rock fight, and no matter the result I expect us to be proud of the effort our boys put out.

Sean: for a PC fan you're usually pretty level headed. But first you predict an NIT invite and now you say PC winning by double digits is a lock. I don't get it.

I do.
They're at home.
They have a center and forward
that we don't match up with at all.
If Cotton plays, I think PC wins.

i think it would be closer to 8 given our propensity to keep it close, rivalry game, PC injuries
agree with Rod, if cotton plays we are done. regardless Batts is going to go Bat crazy on us inside, career game. also dont love our chances playing for long stretches against their zone.

I don't see PC -10 being unreasonable at all. KenPom has it as PC -12.ramster wrote:Do you honestly believe that PC will be favored by at least 10 points against URI?seanmc94 wrote:Of the line is under 10; I will bet my houserhodyrudder wrote:I'm not a vegas oddsmaker.

^^KenPom also had us losing to VT by 3-4, with only a 30% of us winning the game. His predictions are not his strong suit.
They also have less healthy scholarship players then we do. I watched some of their game yesterday and was thoroughly unimpressed. Mississippi St. looked dreadful and frankly PC didn't look much better. Even if Cotton is healthy and plays, I think URI takes it in a nail biter.

Re: Game #9: @ Providence College
Check out the preview show on Cox.
Some funny stuff.
Parise tries to get Dan Hurley to make a wager, with the loser buying lunch.
Hurley mumbles and says ,"OK, if they win, they can have Preston for a day,"
Cooley is all over Parise. Tells him they have an awful seat for him at the game.
Parise mentions he'll call Cooley for tickets, to which Cooley said, "No, don't call me for the game."
When the lunch wager is brought up, Cooley looks at the camera and says, "Well, I LIKE TO EAT!"
Suggests since he and Hurley live less than a mile apart, they go to the loser's house for lunch.
Good show.
Can't remember when both schools had more likeable coaches at the same time.

Nothing like putting words in my mouth. What I said was Skerry would turn Towson around fast. You've never been one to let pesky things like facts get in the way of a not so clever post.
I do think PC will win by +10. If Cotton is ok; uri has no answer for the inside outside game PC can play with he and Batts.
If you watched PC in the first half yesterday and weren't impressed; you don't know hoops. They put on a clinic.
If VC were healthy; PC wins by 30.
It will be great when both teams have a full compliment of players

I'm saying that a PC -10 line isn't unreasonable. The best college basketball analysis site backs that up by having PC -12. I'm not saying that the line will be -10, or that PC will win by -12 because Ken Pomroy says so...I'm saying that -10 isn't unreasonable. Personally, I think reef has it nailed with an -8 spread.
Arguing that his predictions aren't his strong suit because he had UVM 70% to win is like saying Nate Silver's predictions aren't his strong suit because he had Heitkamp 8% to win in North Dakota. Not even taking the sample size into account, 70% for a UVM win isn't 100%...it's still a 30% chance for URI to win.

Re: Game #9: @ Providence College
Saragin has PC 81-73, for what it's worth.
Other notes:
PC has had the 310st toughest schedule according to Saragin, and 295th according to KenPom.
URI is at 46/57.
That's definitely where URI has the edge...they have played a much higher level of competition, since I don't really think either team has a significant edge with other intangibles (ie...coaching).
Even though PC has a big offensive edge with Batts over URI's bigs, URI does a decent job in the paint, which is buoyed by Jordan Hare and Ryan Brooks being very good shot blockers. Neither team is strong defensive rebounding, and both are pretty good offensive rebounding teams (because of Kofane/Bancroft/Batts and Aaman/Hare/Brooks). Neither team runs, and both teams mix man to man and zone during a game.
URI has an advantage in taking care of the basketball too, where as PC can get sloppy.
PC are one of the best in the country at defending the 3, which could be a major problem since about 1/3rd of URI's points come from beyond the arc. If X, Malone, Powell, and Nik are completely bottled up and have to move inside, this game is completely over.

guessing the line will be 71/2
Of course our current record is 5-3 with the points, so , odds are , we will be in this till the end.
If we stay even on rebounding we will win!!

Re: Game #9: @ Providence College
McRam,
PC had a 37 game home streak, and were nationally ranked with Walker, Riordan, Blair,
et al.
Art Stephanson killed PC all night, as we used Chubin as a decoy, since he was double teamed all night.
In the game, Ernie Calverley went to a zone defense for the first time ever, and
he totally outcoached Joe Mullaney that night.
The first game at Kingston was a very close game.
The Projo headline read,
"Ram's Rockribbed Defense Beats PC."
Both teams were NCAA bound that year.
One of the weirdest wins was over the PC Marvin-Ernie teams.
Last one played in Keaney.
We had a big lead and held on for the win. Steve Rowell and Abu Bakr had big games for us.
That was the one where Red Auerbach, laughed at Ernie D fouling out on a flop.
The outrage of PC fans caused WJAR to fire Red!
Now, imagine Tom Carmody outcoached Dave Gavitt that night! Wow!

Re: Game #9: @ Providence College
Rod, Knew u would remember. Wish I were there for the Earnie D flop, but wasn't.
If I remember correctly, in the game that I referenced, I think that PC was ranked 6th in country and had all the coverage and pr in RI even though we had an excellent, small and exciting club. I do remember in the first game Henry Carey tried to stop Walker at crunch time and Walker just simply shot over him
time after time.
Yes, in the 84-61 win, Earnie went to a zone, but what I remember is that the players had no real idea of what to do, and it turned out to be a mad scramble defense that was incredibly effective for one game.(I think it was Vince Cazetta's (the assistant coach) idea.
Wish I were there this year!
Go Rams!

I agree...I came to URI hoops just in time to stop making the NCAA occasionally (the first year of the Jerry D era) after enjoying the 98 run and 99 A10 championship from afar.ATPTourFan wrote:The last two posts from Rod and McRam are why this message board is so great for Rhody fans of all kinds. I forgot, or didn't know, he spent a season in the NBA and was actually traded for Vinny Delnegro. So how many NBA players were on that team? Garces, Shammgod, Croshere, Michael Smith? Jamel Thomas? 4 or 5? That's ridiculous for a school like that. Will be like URI in a couple years...with EC Mathews, Hassan Martin, Jabari Parker, and Jordan Hare.ace wrote:Except that others here are agreeing that 10, at least for the line, makes sense. Check the posts from the pregame threads the last 2 years. I nailed my predictions on both. I stand by my statement that PC wins by 10+.
Unlike some here who always crow about "having" every big upset after it happens; I call my shot.
As an aside, any PC fan or others have any idea what Michael Smith is up to these days?

Do I think PC will win? Yup...probably. I don't expect it to be a blow out though.
Has anyone looked at their out of conference schedule??? Holly soft serve Batman! PC isn't exactly a strong 6-2. They beat the N.J.I.T. Highlanders, Bryant, UNC-Asheville Bulldogs, Fairfield, Holly Cross (4-4 this year) and Mississippi State Bulldogs (2-5). I think I burst out laughing when I saw it.

Michael Smith has been MIA in recent years.
He did not play with that team; he was on the 94 squad

The friars are playing very well in light of the severe manpower deficiency....I give Cooley credit...
...the friars have an easy schedule...but casual fans don't know that....
....we had a tougher schedule....but casual fans see the losses and know we are bad...even if we have been in most games..
.....we lose to pc by 15....the line will be 8.5
