URI has left the door open but I don't think Garrett is walking through it. Finkelstein got that from Hurd and with all due respect I wouldn't put much stock in what he says.

Remember last spring, when we thought of going
after Dominic Woodson?
They backed off for character reasons, and felt he wasn't a good fit.
Well, guess they were right:
L. Jason Smith @TheCAJasonSmith 23m
Pastner said Dominic will be suspended indefinitely. "I did not like some of his language he used. So I said, 'See ya.'" Won't play at UConn

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
You can't have players swearing on the bench in college.
KG can do it in the NBA, but this is college.
"During his postgame news conference after the win, Pastner said he didn't approve of some of the language that Woodson was using and removed him from the bench in the second half.
"Regarding Dom, he will be suspended indefinitely until I decide to bring him back," Pastner said. "No one is bigger than the program. That's just the bottom line."
Pastner said Woodson's foul language during the game was not acceptable on his bench, so he sent him to the showers.
"I did not like some of the language he used and I will not allow guys to use language that is not acceptable, because I don't use it," Pastner said. "If you're going to use that, go use it in the locker room. You're not going to use it on my bench. So I said, 'see ya!'"

Pastner did say that Woodson was a 3.0 student.
I'd like to know when finger painting and video games became
courses at Memphis?
Some schools backed off him for academics, as well as
character issues.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
We could still get a verbal or two.
The clock is ticking......
Every day I come on here, hoping to read the words "URI verbal" next to one of our recruits' names.
Every day, nothing...
If we get to the signing period without anything, it will be nail biting time.
Maybe Iggy the Oracle will have something concrete for us soon.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
No, but a verbal would be nice. As of now, only Gustys is showing any interest in us, that we know of, and even he probably has us 2nd. And are we involved with any point guards? If we are, it's a well kept secret.BFC wrote:Can't, its not a signing period.Rhodymob05 wrote:So much talk about all these guys. Has the ink gone dry in the Uri pens??? Sign someone

Maybe that's what the staff wants.
Too much speculation, too few facts.
The only thing I know, is that we are involved with quite a few kids. How much interest is there, none of us know.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
We all want to know who's coming, but the reality is February verbals are very rare. There's been maybe handful significant D1 verbals since Jan. 1st. Guys like Garrett and Gustys are no-brainers for us, but other than that we're looking at diamonds in the rough, late qualifiers, and juco's. You don't want to miss out on someone you really want because you pulled the trigger too fast on someone else.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
It's pretty tough to keep things quiet these days, with the world of twitter. If one of our coaches is watching someone, it's pretty sure that someone will tweet it, as was the case with Preston in Michigan a couple of days ago. And it was well known that we were after Garrett. But now that he has turned us down, what next?rambone 78 wrote:Maybe that's what the staff wants.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Agreed, but it's a tough wait.
SO much depends on bringing in quality recruits for next year.
The pressure is really on the staff. Any recruits that watch us, can clearly see what we need.
Do they want to be a star here, or ride the pine at a bigger school? That's basically the question here.
The answer is obvious to us, but not so obvious to them. Some kids think they will jump right in at these BCS schools and start. The reality will be something different.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Well, Garrett is clearly waiting for Marquette's season to end
and see who's leaving.
For the zillionth time, this is Kaza Keane redux.
Keane kept us on a string waiting, while he waited to see what
Pitt was going to do.
Like Marquette, Pitt was loaded with young guards and incoming guards.
So, he waited too long. We grabbed Minnis, and Keane was left
holding the bag , and a little bit in shock that we didn't wait.
Garrett is playing the same game, it seems.
and see who's leaving.

Well, we can't wait for Garrett either, I would think.
How can we count on a kid coming here, that clearly doesn't have us as his first choice?

Hey, you don't always get the prettiest girl at school, either.
Sometimes reality sets in, and as the Stone say,
"You can't always get what you want,
but if you try sometime, you just might get what you need."

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Sort of reminds me of Hoop Dreams. Slightly difference, but when I hear these stories, I think of the scene where I believe it was Marquette in William Gates living room, and they say something to the effect of "William, we like you a lot and we want you to play for us. But we have one scholarship for your position and aren't going to sit around and wait for you to choose us. This 'ship has been offered to 2 other guys and the first to commit gets it." I believe that's how the scene went anyway, haven't seen the movie in a few years.

It really is possible for coaches to be out watching someone and not have it make it to social media. Trust me on that.

The Big O was a Big Unknown.
We grabbed him before anybody knew anything about him.
How we knew about him, is what we don't know. Dan and Bobby knew something, though.

Not exactly. He was a 3 star ESPN guy, and teams had offered. No one else was able to capitalize on sharing the eligibility info and getting him out early.rambone 78 wrote:The Big O was a Big Unknown.

He was a three star, by ESPN, 4th in Virginia, so people did know about him.
What the brothers did was research O's situation. He would have lost
two year of college eligibility had he stayed in prep school.
They talked him into acting fast in his own interest.

This kid would be a great fit. He would get a lot of minutes right away. Would clean up on the boards. His presence would allow people to play their natural positions. That last part would really improve our team.

Haven't heard any names. They wanted to bring players in for the three weekend games. I'm thinking aSG or wing today. I'm sure Preston and Dan were trying to set up visits on their last recruiting swing. So maybe someone from Mich or a juco.

I'm not sure if that's good or bad. Yes, it's bad that we can't get recruits to games. But it also would have been bad to have recruits at the game and witness that mess.Iggy1979 wrote:I don't have a great view but I didn't see anyone behind the bench

Weather kept them away. If they had seen this game, they would have run away.
Seriously, Rod, this staff had better be recruiting 24/7 for the next 2 months.
Forget the games. How many more will we win anyway? Maybe we'll win a game if the opponents shoot at the wrong basket?

This looks like a pre season list.
It doesn't take into account late bloomers,
if it is.
What is interesting is, they list jucos.
It's almost impossible to find information on jucos,
so this list might be useful going forward.
