This board is painful to read sometimes. I really hope Butler becomes half the player PMurph was, but right now I don't see even that happening. To say X hinders our offense at any point in the game is pretty moronic. Is he perfect? No. Does he make some mistakes? Yes. Does he miss some big shots? Yes. That being said, he's probably in the group of the best 5 pure scorers we've had here in the past 14 years. I would put maybe Will Daniels and Dawan Robinson ahead of him and maybe that's a stretch. I think it's safe to say EC could be in that list, if not at the top of it by the time he's done here.

Actually, no.

Moronic? He shoots 30% from three and has taken 150 of them this year. He shoots 38% from the field over 350 shots. He takes a lot of shots and misses way more than makes. Look at the game logs of the close games. Its eye opening. He turns the ball over more than he assists his teammates. This is the definition of basketball black hole. I'm not on a crusade to change anyone's opinion anymore. But, URI was around 200 in offense last year. And #194 this year. We don't win because our offense stinks. Pretty simple. Like I said before, hope he graduates. Hope he makes bank over in Europe. Rhody will be better on offense next year subtracting his 16 shots.JFrech21 wrote:This board is painful to read sometimes. I'm so sick of this guy posting the percentages, extrapolating here or there and dogging X!!! Unless we land a guard who can provide instant impact, which is highly unlikely, X will be missed big time. He came here and bought into the rebuild, we'd be screwed without him, he's an excellent scorer, a very good defender and causes match-up issues for other teams, ie. he opens things up for others. And did I mention we'd be screwed without him. He's not perfect, but a lot has been put on him and he responded well and appears to provide real leadership. You can't cobble that together with others pitching in a couple of points and assists. I'll trade percentage points for leadership, defense, a great first step, the ability to finish at the rim, the ability to self create, etc... Frankly, I'll miss watching him play for us.
Go Rhody!!!

RR, if we can find another transfer similar to him, we'll be better next year, without a doubt.
Somebody like him, who is ready to step in and provide some of what we're lacking in a true PG.
If we don't get that true PG for next year, it would be the next best thing.

Donnie Marshal was saying tonight,
"When someone is a scorer, you don't mind them taking some bad shots,
because you want a scorer to shoot."
So, what does he know? He only played with Ray Allen at UConn.
Notice when games like when X was 9-20 and 4-6 from 3, we didn't hear
a peep.
Claims he watched a little of the game. Yeah, right.

We need to win a few more. And we need to get an impact backcourt player. We all agree on that.
X needs to lead this team to a victory or 2 or god forbid a magical run with a little luck to the A10 title in the Barclays.
Regardless if we win another game, you don't pull a senior leader and pack it in for a Butler. You let him score, make his mark and build his resume for his future career. Especially when he isn't hurting the team and is still in the same role that he always was in.
Juco guns will see that. The youth will see that DH won't bail on his guys.

Re: Game #24: vs UMass - Sun Feb 9, 4pm CBS Sports Network
Don't know how anybody can criticize Munford. He is still the best player on the floor for URI at the moment and will be sorely missed next year. I understand everyone's desire to win every game this year, but i still think it wouldn't hurt to get Butler some extra minutes to see if he can be more than a bench warmer next season. It looks like Hurley is gaining some confidence in him and maybe that is his plan. I don't believe we know for sure at this point if he will become a factor next season or not. Rod, if you mean by "He's not the answer" is that he is not the answer to replace munford then I agree. But I believe the more opportunities he gets to try to fit into the team, the better off they will be next year. And I do understand that winning is important to the team psyche going forward and for recruiting purposes. I'm not saying to drastically limit Munford's time or any other player, just give Butler double digit minutes at least once in awhile.

I think my only real point on the whole Butler thing is that I get people saying they want to see more of him because we don't know what he can do yet because we haven't seen him play much. But you know who sees a ton of him every single day in practice? The coaches. So if he isn't seeing much time out there right now there is probably a reason.

The Hare/Martin posts in this thread have been high comedy. Hassan is going to be the next Reynolds Dean type player for us and I wouldnt trade him for anyone, but to "discredit" Hare and compare him to Martin is a joke. If Hare was a Hurley recruit I'm sure some on this board would be singing a different tune. It also would have been nice to see Hare playing as a freshman along side guys like Biruta and Big O instead of Ryan Brooks and Mike Aaman, I'm sure his numbers would look a little different.

Re: Game #24: vs UMass - Sun Feb 9, 4pm CBS Sports Network
Martin will be a far better player than ARD.
He already plays better defense, and is a better shot blocker.
ARD was a better rebounder as a freshman, and a double figure
scorer, but he never was that much better in the years that followed.
He plateaued. Which was fine, as he was a good solid player.
Martin is already an inch taller at just 18, and may grow in height, and certainly strength.
He has a tremendous upside.
Hare? One on one, couldn't guard anyone. He constantly got faked out of his jock,
and had his man go around him, like he wasn't there.
On offense, he had no game, other than dunking. He had bad hands, and
treated the ball like a hot potato.
Yes, he was 6'10" and could jump. BIG DEAL! He couldn't do anything else.
I'm watching these Big 12 games and everyone has guys sitting on the bench, who fit
that description.
So, keep thinking it's high comedy to dare question Hare's talent.
Some other people didn't think that highly of him, either, and they saw him
every day.

Agreed on all points, Rod, except that it looked like he had improved over the summer.
His shot had improved from observations made during the open practice, and during the Italy trip it's hard to ignore the numbers he put up, even against weak opposition.
He had upside, possibly serious upside. His head got in the way, so we'll never know.
There's no doubt he would have helped us win more games this year.
I get it, though. Moving on, again.

This is just crazy. The reason I use the numbers is because it's the best way to explain what your eyes see. It's pretty simple. The guy has taken 800 shots for URI. The guy is pretty talented. Of course he is going to hit some big ones and have a game like you mentioned. It's just the way it works. I guarantee if you dragged your rocking chair onto the court and took 800 shots, there would be a 20 shot stretch where you made nine of them. I don't care how much he shoots any more. The die was cast on that many moons ago. Coach Wooden, I mean Hurley, gives him free reign. In the context of next year, though, I guarantee subtracting 16 normally empty shooting nights will makes this offense better.
On another note, I am glad to hear that you buy into cliches from broadcasters, especially former players who do color. Probably the least surprising thing I've heard in 2014.

Your eyes dont tell you much b.c my guess is you havent been to a URI game, mainly read box scores, and are on here with some type of odd, demented and disturbing agenda. There is no way you are a fan, and your criticizing the coach and a player has nothing to do with it. Your tone, timing and agenda all scream TROLL> What FAN goes black after wins? Try again pal. I tend to agree with GBG that X's offense will be more easily replaced than it may appear. He is a very good player and one of the best scorers we have had in the last 15 years....but then who are we him to?
Don't get me wrong, I love X and wish we had him another year or two but he is not such a good player that his presence can't be made up with EC getting better and winger recruit

Maybe you should go back and check the middle of this thread. Was right there watching the game. And, honestly, I could not give a rat's *ss what you think. It would be disingenuous of me to say anything or than what I was telling this board in November of 2012. This offense is terrible. X is part of the problem. Not the solution. But everyone yelled. Oh they yelled. They yelled:bigappleram wrote:Your eyes dont tell you much b.c my guess is you havent been to a URI game, mainly read box scores, and are on here with some type of odd, demented and disturbing agenda. 1. It's a new offense. He's said he's only installed 10% (what a crock)
2. These players need time
3. Wait until the transfers come
And, my personal favorite. "Dan told me" that X was going to be way more efficient now that there are better options. I said "no way, he's still gonna chuck. It's in his DNA". Of course, I was roundly yelled at. Guess what. Same amount of shots. Same amount of chucking. Actually, inconceivably, less efficient. Where are you guys now? It's a moving target of excuses from the blind to cover up flaws in what is going on here. Where are all you guys who gave those excuses? Coming up with new ones. Now, we are hoping we are on the Derek Kellogg six year plan? Puke.
The only hope was that he would add a similar 2014 class on top of EC and Martin. 2014 is a snooze fest on the recruiting trail.
As for the agenda meme, it's trite and tired. Yeah, you can accomplish a lot of agenda items on a message board. If there is an agenda, it's opening the eyes of some fans who aren't in bed with this staff.

Most of us are happy to hear from fans with insightful and critical opinions. The key word in the above is "Fans", you aren't one. What fan goes completely silent after wins, and wallows in losses. Not any fan I have ever heard of, and I live in a city of disgruntled sports fans. You are a one trick pony with an agenda. Maybe you got cut from a Jersey City CYO team at a young age and hold the Hurleys responsible.

EC is already a better scorer than X.

The adingono sentence was conjecture (you'd think that'd be apparent when including a rotation player with a list of URI studs, but i will make sure to address sarcasm next time) - either way he's a far superior 3pt shooter than X.
And smokin - jamal wilson is a different player than jamaal wise.
X's offensive efficiency is awful. To say he's a better scorer than any of those names up there is straight up ridiculous. X has a mid-range jumper. He's had 2 clutch game winners in the last couple years - yet how many times has he bungled and panicked on a last play? How many free throws has he missed down the stretch.
X is a good player - not elite, and should not be the focal point of this offense. If you think someone shooting 30% from three should be taking all the shots from deep, then I don't know what to say to you.

For anyone who's watched other basketball teams over the years, and not just in kingston, it's ok to be a fan of a team and point out the obvious about where they suck.

They are going in the wrong direction. If we can ever figure out how to win a close game, we might add to their misery when we play them again.
They are probably safe for the Dance right now, but watch out....

Kellogg and UMass = the new CFL.
What an epic collapse is happening in Amherst.
I sure wish we could have added to it Sunday.

Yup. Kellogg, Ford, and Baron.
February wallflowers, all.
If they [UMass] don't make it, Kellogg's head will roll, I would think. This is their best chance in a long time. I doubt they have him under a contract as onerous as JB's was here.

RowdyPkunk and UMassHoops15, I won't allow VCU fans and UMass fans to bait each other on our site. Show some class as a guest here like DistrictBaller or you'll begin to see some restrictions.
At least go to UMassHoops to trash them directly -- not via KeaneyBlue.
