For those who don't gamble, feel free to laugh at us degenerates
For those that do...how do you feel about this season money-wise?
Last year while unhappy with the product, I was happy to bet against Rhody and my wallet thanked me. This year...I see myself taking a lot of Rhody + spreads. I think this team keeps games a lot closer than bookmakers will give us credit for.
For instance, I'm figuring Rhody to be a serious 20+ point dog to Ohio State, I'll hammer that line.
No spread out for tomorrow night yet, excited to get it going though!

Tho' not a bettor myself, I'd think that's the wise course, at least at the beginning of the season.
agreed Blue Man... the only real interest I had in the final Baron years was building up the bank account.. it was really odd how much respect URI had with Vegas toward the end of the Baron years.. the easiest money you can make. I will not touch URI this year because I want to enjoy the games as much as I can and when a wager is on the line I tend not to enjoy the game as much. I think RI will be undervalued to start the season, but Vegas will quickly adjust. We have all sufferred enough the past 10 years, I'm looking forward to getting behind this team and being a fan again.. even if that doesnt translate into wins this year. From what I've seen and heard this team and coaching staff is one you can really get excited about and I'm looking forward to making as many trips as I can to the Ryan Center this year, starting with tomorrow night.
The early portion of the season is the best time to bet on College hoops. Vegas doesn't get tuned in until Feb. I would expect the lines on URI to be out of whack because of all the pre-season predictions. Taking URI and the points sounds like a good strategy in the early part of the season. As the season progresses you should be much more selective in which URI games to bet on. I usually stay away from betting on teams I love or hate because its hard to not bet with your heart.
Best time to bet on college hoops is March Madness. The 5/12 games are a great bet most times as the 5 seed is normally a 6 to 11 point favorite and every year it seems like two five seeds fall.
Although, the beginning of the year is also a good time to bet if you know a mid-major is underrated and playing a BCS school. Betting on A-10 teams against the Big East in early games seemed to always pay off as the lines were ridiculous.

You lured me out of being a lurker on the new site with betting talk. I made my bets last year after they stopped pressing early in the season and did ok on the unders. I got frustrated on a couple of bad beats when games when to overtime (and in one case double overtime). This year it will be interesting to see how they set the points totals and if the hurleys will run at a breakneck pace. If they play as fast as everyone has described the pratices we might have some higher scoring games.
O'Sheas is being replaced with a parking lot and a Ferris Wheel. A sad time indeed. R.I.P. O'Sheas... I'll miss the beer pong table and the damp carpet it's played on. No amount of rinse water could help...
Here is my question for all of you, since I can't actually bet - How the heck do all of y'all do it? Like, I imagine reef can just go to a sportsbook, since if I recall correctly, he's in Vegas. How do the rest of you do it though? Do bookies still exist, or is this solely an online thing?
SG: Online is the way to go. Very reliable, never had a problem getting paid.
Clay: I think this will definitely be a year to take the under a lot - lack of consistent shooters and lockdown D should make that a safe play. The problem I've run into is that a lot of URI games won't get a ton of action so you won't see a moneyline or an o/u all the time.
If you say you’re a Rhody fan, I know you are my brother. For you have suffered as I have suffered.
And my site has no URI spread tonight...they have Iona v Devner, Tennessee Martin v Ark Little Rock, Eastern Illinois v Bradley, Wright State v Idaho - but they don't have the team coached by one of the first families of basketball playing the team that knocked off Missou last year.
WTF.

Is everyone just being overly optimistic about the new coaching situation? Granted we are all homers but isn't it a bit premature to assume that Hurley et al. will be an underrated staff?
By the way I dont see a line up on 5dimes yet. Will check later on in the day.
Forgive my betting ignorance.....what is "sharp money" ?
F*ck Alacki, DarthFriar, DirtyBeanFriar94, xCoachK, Boxworth, Friar Faithful, bicycleicycle, Matt_Keough, Patrick Norton, the Rosato brothers, and especially Benjamin Lord !

I believe it refers to the money that makes the line move. i.e. If the line goes from 11 to 12, then the "smart money" was the professional gamblers gobbling up the bet when it was at 11.
curious to see how big the spread will be for OSU. This'll probably be my first action of the year, and I think if the spread is well into the 20s, I'm taking Rhody and the points. I think the shots will start to fall.

Anyone in on tonight's game? Looks like it opened around 7.5 and is already up to +9. I don't really see it getting any higher before tip off so I'm in at +9.
Year to date:
vs. Ohio St. - W (+23.5)
vs. Loyola Maryland - Push (+4)
I'm going to see what the line does before tip off - I think nationally no one respects URI so I'm hoping the moneyline will get up even higher, I'll be taking Rhody straight up tonight regardless.

Yup I hit the under and Rhody +4 as well, wish i put more on it. But isnt that always the case.....
I also took Duke -6 vs Ohio State. Anyone watch how the game ended?? Was hoping for a push. Duke up 4 pts and Plumlee was fouled with 0.2 left in game. Nails the first free throw to be up 5 pts, then completely whiffs on the second and airballs it about 3 feet short of the rim. Couldnt believe it!!! Almost like he bet against his own team..... oh well

Crazy how many pointless plays happen down the stretch in games that affect spreads.
People wonder why there's a few in the crowd screaming when your team is out of a game to score more points anyway. Love gambling...adds a complete other element to games.

The line vs PC started at PC -9.5 but now down to -6.5 Waiting for my site to launch todays lines, I plan on betting the house on Rhody due to a depleted PC roster. I will go down to URI +4 for a huge bet, and honestly think Rhody will come out with a win.
Went 2-0 yesterday on CBB, took Florida -7 vs FSU and WVU -5 vs Marshall. Florida has a GREAT team and i knew they were gonna blow out a struggling FSU squad, but was a little risky because of a rivalry game at FSU. They won 72-47
Got Rhody early at +6.5, I'm happy where I'm at. Didn't get an o/u on my site though...I expect this game to definitely be less than 130, possibly 120.

FWIW, when PC last played with this roster (5 scholarship players and the walkon), they scored 52 points in an OT game. They really struggled to run the offense, and played mostly 2-3 zone on defense. Luckily Penn St. could not hit the ocean with a beach ball that day, but the looks were there, although the zone was still pretty strong all things considered.
