A-10 WBB Awards 2022-2023 Announced

Unread post by ramster »

Tammi Reiss wins A10 Coach of the Year
  • Reiss guided Rhode Island to the most wins in a single season (23), most victories within A-10 play (14) and most wins at the Ryan Center (13) in program history during the 2022-23 campaign, elevating the Rams on the national stage as Rhody received votes in two national polls for the second straight season. Additionally, the fourth-year head coach led the Rams to their first-ever back-to-back 20-win season and just the fourth overall, helping URI collect a share of the Atlantic 10 regular-season title as well and the No. 2 overall seed at the Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Championship.
Maye Toure was named 1st Team and received the WBB Most Improved Player Award
  • Maye Touré, a fellow European import from Athis-Mons, France, put together a notable bounce in production between this year and last, bumping up her points-per-game output by 11.4 while generating 12 double-doubles throughout the 2022-23 regular season en route to shattering last season’s mark of just one. Further, the junior forward improved her efficiency on the floor as well, leading the league with a 53.8 percent (164-of-305) shooting percentage after finishing with a 39.6 percent (19-for-48) just a year prior. Touré also concluded the season as a member of the Atlantic 10 All-Conference 1st team.
Madison Hattie-Covington Honored 3rd Team
  • Rhode Island graduate student Madison Hattix-Covington made Atlantic 10 All-Conference 3rd Team

I've made a slight change to the thread title, and will update as more awards come out, since I'm assuming we'll have players on various award teams.

Other awards for URI:

- Junior Maya Toure is named Most Improved Player and a member of the first team.
- Graduate student Madison Hattix-Covington is a third team member.

No players on the second teams.

Ah, whoops! Thank you. Didn't notice it tacked on at the end. (Why can't they just display the teams in a chart or a list? blah!)

Having only one player on the first team and one on the third team, speaks volumes about the coaching and the depth of this team. UMASS and Fordham were loaded with upper classmen and returned all of their key players. Our staff on the other hand continually shuffled players in and out, hoping to find the right combinations; and it got us to where we are right now. Looking at what we have returning and what's coming in, the expectation is that we will be contending for the A10 title on a regular basis.

This is much better, yes. I'm not sure why they just didn't have this ready to go in the initial release, since it doesn't really seem like anything that would have been done on deadline. Oh well! Thanks for the link.

Individual players stats don't jump out at you because Tammy plays 11 players. 11 averaged over 12 minutes per game and only 4 players averaged over 20 minutes per game with MHC at 28 leading the team. Toure averaged 13.6 points and 8.4 rebounds in only 26.6 minutes. She might be player of the year if she plays 32 minutes. Another for instance...Sophie Phillips averaged 8.4 points, but that was on an average of only 18.5 minutes per game. She also had 61 three pointers and shot 40.4% from long distance (more threes and a better percentage than anyone on the men's team). What are her stats if she plays 32 minutes a game? But there was no need for anyone to play big minutes because the team has so much depth.
